#02. Scared Of The Dark | 9.233

Steps_Scared_of_the_Dark_Cover.jpg

Highest Scores: 11: (Electro Troye, gooddelta, Slowdown73, Dexton), 10: (SamJudd, Rossco, Lukuzz, PAJ88, rafik4u, me me, Jupiter, Simon, Tawdry Hepburn, Aaron, Spiceboy, Jester, pippa, Feel The Fever, Jay)
Lowest Scores: 3: (Good Old Days)

We are almost at the end of this countdown and in the runner up spot is their triumphant comeback single 'Scared Of The Dark', which means.. you already know who the winner is, but for now let's talk about this. Released in March 2017 as the lead single from their 5th studio album 'Tears On The Dancefloor' and following it's release it hit #1 on the iTunes chart almost instantly, which I must say was a very proud moment and hit #37 on the UK charts, becoming their 17th top 40 hit and if it wasn't for Ed Sheeran's album clogging up the charts, then this would have hit a #21 peak.
Wow I was expecting this to do well, but didn't expect it to get this high, I was maybe predicting a top 5 position, but 2nd, that's just amazing and just goes to show how much love there is for this. Already a classic Steps number which was the perfect choice to reintroduce Steps back into the pop world - as well as winning over some new fans. I do like the fact that they stuck to their original pop sound, although updated a little and not conformed to todays modern sound, it's just Steps doing their own thing and giving the fans what they want and are proud of it. An instant stone cold banger classic upon first listen and have never looked back. The track begins almost deceptively into thinking that it may be a ballad with some slow strings before bursting into a up-tempo dramatic disco pop track with some fantastic vocals from our 3 leading ladies Claire, Faye & Lisa and therefore makes a glorious return with a song that's a more than welcome addition to their legacy. Now if this was released back in their hey-day then of course this would have been a huge chart smash, hell if this was brought out during this 2012 comeback instead of that awful Christmas song, then this would have stood a much better chance, but having nowadays is still a more than welcome surprise and brings the modern music scene something that's sorely missing.

#01. It's The Way You Make Me Feel | 9.766

Stepstheway.jpgStepstheway2.jpg

Highest Scores: 11: (SamJudd, gavindeejay, rafik4u, me me, Jupiter, Aaron, vibe, Jonjo, iiiiiiiii, Jay)
10: (Electro Troye, Euphorique, Rossco, Lukuzz, PAJ88, gooddelta, Simon, Hide&Seek, Spiceboy, Jester, Good Old Days)
Lowest Scores: 6: (dandy)

So there you have it Buzzjack your winner of the 2017 Steps Singles Rate is.... 'It's The Way You Make Me Feel' which makes this a welcome and somewhat surprising turn of events, but the scores don't garnering ten 11's (far more than anyone else) and a whole bunch of other high scores and no really low scores either. All of which makes this a very worthy winner.
Released in January 2001 as 4th overall single taken from their 3rd album 'Buzz' and reached #2 on the UK charts, but during the final week of 2000 a few copies were released to record stores, which caused this to enter at #72 during it's first week and was properly released the following week which caused it to climb 70 places, which made this a record at the time, but this also prevented it from reaching #1. This also marked their first non PWL single, which was probably why 'Too Busy Thinking About My Baby' was tacked on to this and funnily enough finished at the complete tail end of this countdown. This was also their first time working with famous producer Max Martin who launched the likes of Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys & N Sync, all of which were huge at the time and it shows with it's very polished production, however I would say that this song executes that kind of sound far more effectively, making this their most classiest sounding release yet and at the same time quite refreshing change of pace from their usual pop.disco style. Yet it's still very much Steps, with some beautiful strings which made this a definite standout on the album and on the whole a very well deserved winner. Even the music video which is fantastic BTW with it's 'Dangerous Liaisons' costume themed drama, making this whole thing a very classy affair and just goes to show at how far they've come from their quite tacky line-dancing beginnings.
So there you have it and would like to thank everybody whose taken part in this rate and made it a big success thank you
SamJudd..

Thank you SO MUCH Sam! This has been great. Loved reading your commentary and above all, the very best song won! YAY!

I would have preferred a different winner but it was a decent winner.

Steps had more than 10 number ones in my chart.

I had thought my own average would be higher. I must have been in strict marking mood the day i submitted my scores.
Many of their hits have aged really well, when they reformed I really got back into them and I was surprised by how good the songs still sound today.
