April 28, 20187 yr 19 | Tatu - All The Things She Said | 8.09 8mGBaXPlri8 UK Peak: 01 US Peak: 20 UK Chart Run: 25/01/2003 57-44-01-01-01-01-03-05-13-19-26-28-33-34-43-56-66-> 15wk LOVED IT:, Cameron, Casey, Riser (11) HATED IT: UltraReputation (-1) At #19 is the only girlgroup duo left, Tatu, with their debut hit 'All The Things She Said' - a huge #1 in the UK helped massively by it's controversial (at the time at least) video depicting the two as lesbian schoolgirls kissing in the rain. I'm not too sure it would kick up that much of a fuss these days but I remember it being a huge deal back in 2003 for some reason :'). It was also a Top 20 hit for them in the US - a good song that I don't go back to often but still a strong pop song. Even Richard and Judy campaigned to have the music video banned for "pandering to paedophiles and CD:UK wouldn't show the video.
April 28, 20187 yr I'm not mad at that for About You Now, it's very... idk if I'd say overrated as such but it'd probably not be in my Sugababes top 10
April 28, 20187 yr Push the Button is my favourite Sugababes song! Pop perfection! I was so pleased that it was such a huge hit for them - 3 weeks at #1 was a great achievement in those days, at a time when it was more common to spend a single week at the top. Just a pity that 2005 sales levels were quite poor across the board, it's "only" Gold certified. For how huge it felt at the time, in today's terms it'd have definitely been a "millionaire" seller with ease. Yeah, that chart run for Up was very impressive at the time - it became one of the longest stays in the chart for any girl group single at that point! Leaving the Top 40 after 9 weeks, but then re-entering and spending 10 further weeks in the Top 40. :o I suppose it must have been the success of Issues and the release of their album that kept Up afloat like that? It's such a contrast to some of their other chart runs. Disco Love sharing the same #5 peak, but leaving the Top 75 after 6 weeks... It is funny to look back at All the Things She Said and just how controversial it was at the time. I was only 15 when it became a hit, and I remember being quite fascinated by it, mainly because it was one of the first LGBT-related songs/videos I'd ever been exposed to. I did sense that the public's response to it was finding it to be a titillating novelty though, so it didn't feel particularly liberating for me as a still-closeted teenager. As for the song itself, it's decent... I liked it a lot more at the time than I do these days.
April 28, 20187 yr I'm not mad at that for About You Now, it's very... idk if I'd say overrated as such but it'd probably not be in my Sugababes top 10  About You Now is vastly overrated. Pleased to see it underperform and miss the top 10 :D
April 28, 20187 yr About You Now when I first heard it was one of the most instant choruses I’d ever heard. But it sounds so bland now.
April 29, 20187 yr Shut Your Mouth 'About You Now' is one of the greatest pop singles of all time. It's my favourite girl group single
April 29, 20187 yr 'Call The Shots' is one of the greatest pop singles of all time. It's my favourite girl group single  I agree, Jonjo! :P
April 29, 20187 yr Don't be so disgusting. :o Call The Shots >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> About You Now Call The Shots is pop perfection!

April 29, 20187 yr About You Now is vastly overrated. Pleased to see it underperform and miss the top 10 :D Agreed
April 29, 20187 yr Was underwhelmed by About You Now at the time and since tbh so glad to see Push the Button get past it. Also surprised that Round Round is still in though, I expected Push to be the Babes' top song by now. Interesting split for what's left, more diverse than I was expecting: three more for Sugababes, two for Little Mix, two Girls Aloud, five for Spice Girls, and one each for All Saints, Mis-teeq and TLC!
April 29, 20187 yr Round Round HAS to go. It's already about 60 places too high!! I find Call the Shots to be boring. Well, not so much the production, but I feel like the girls sound really bored and disinterested/phoning it in, so it's never really clicked with me. Sorry!
April 29, 20187 yr I find Call the Shots to be boring. Well, not so much the production, but I feel like the girls sound really bored and disinterested/phoning it in, so it's never really clicked with me. Sorry! That's sort of my feelings for About You Now. Bland, boring, weak vocals etc etc...
April 30, 20187 yr I find Call the Shots to be boring. Well, not so much the production, but I feel like the girls sound really bored and disinterested/phoning it in, so it's never really clicked with me. Sorry!I feel the same, especially about the vocals. I did give it a 7 but it's never fully clicked with me either and I'm surprised it's such a fan fave! Pleased with the result for All The Things She Said  It always amazes me that the song was originally in Russian, the English version is so well-written I never would've guessed it was translated (well, sort of)!
April 30, 20187 yr I think the vocal delivery in Call The Shots suits the overall message of the song! In regards to the lyrics, they're being strong and not overly emotional about the situation. Like, they're literally over this guy they're singing about and are telling him in no uncertain terms: "It really doesn't faze me how you spend your time" "I won't cry because I've made it through this far" "If you don't feel that you can love me, I won't shoot you down". It's like they're saying "whatever, I'm done... you do your thing, but I'm moving on". No drama, no tears, just self-preservation. So, I think the coolness of their vocals (cool as in, "showing no friendliness towards a person") is completely on purpose. When it comes to conveying a certain mood through the lyrics/vocals and production, I think Xenomania really nailed it with Call The Shots. Obviously anyone is entitled to think they sound bored, but I think sensing boredom from them is a misinterpretation, missing the intended mood of the song!
April 30, 20187 yr About You Now when I first heard it was one of the most instant choruses I’d ever heard. But it sounds so bland now. Yeah I agree with this, it just hasn't aged well for me. They've got songs like Round Round, Hole In The Head, Stronger, Freak Like Me and Overload I still go back to a lot and adore, and whilst I still like About You Now, I just can never fathom how above those songs it's such a fan fave. It's just quite basic compared to the aforementioned which I think cemented Sugababes as something different, and it felt like only they could pull it off. About You Now could be Girls Aloud, The Saturdays, anyone, I feel the same about Push The Button although there's just something more fun about that for me. I don't hate AYN at all, I gave it an 8 here, which is kind of why I'm hesitant to say overrated as such so I explain it in this way
April 30, 20187 yr About You Now is a very straight-forward song with an instantly catchy chorus - highly accessible pop that ticks a lot of boxes! I'd agree it's certainly not their most unique song or particularly indicative of a "Sugababes" sound, but that probably helps towards it being such a general fave. Even those who are less enthusiastic about the song, probably wouldn't feel inclined to give it much lower than a 6 or 7, I guess? It's not a particularly divisive song, or one that tends to attract hate, so that sets it up to do well in the results. (Although on this occasion it did pick up one '-1' which is obviously damaging, but the general consensus seems to be that it's generally well liked/loved). Tbh I'd say 17th is a bit of a shock result for it; it tends to perform better in these activities. In fact it came 1st in Lee's girl group rate in The Saturdays forum, a couple of years back!
April 30, 20187 yr Oh wow, I was really expecting the likes of 'About You Now' and 'Push The Button' in the top 10 as they're so straightforward and inoffensive! They're both good, but I'm pleased that songs like 'Freak Like Me', 'Round Round' and 'Hole In The Head' are higher as they're more sonically interesting for me. From the 'Are Friends Electric?' sample in 'Freak Like Me' to the banging Brian Higgins and co. production in 'Hole In The Head'.
