This is nothing new tbh. The charts have always been like that.

For me I don't think her music is that bad, it's just tiring to hear constantly and in my case it's all by accident/force. She will always have my respect for how she dealt with the Manchester attacks but on the music side of things like I said earlier in the thread she just needs to chill with the wave of new music.

I think given Sweetner's relative under performed they are throwing lots of things at the wall seeing what sticks.

I guess it is the way the charts are now, every time she releases a new song it's 'Omg new Ariana song we must here/download this' so each new song gets a huge push and hype and great start. In the old days a song premiered a while before release so if it wasnt catching on it tended to under perform upon release. Ariana doesn't have to worry about that just which songs end up being sustained hits and memes and blow up social media.

It is a shame they seem to be focused on gimmicks than crafting genuinely great songs. She can obviously sing and when she has a song like No tears she fits the superstar bill. For now for me though it's a bit try hard to catch on than trying to create quality music.

Don't even try to say that Thank U Next wasn't a long lasting big hit.

The fact she is constantly breaking Spotify records shows that people are interested to HEAR what she's done. They're not bothered about the "gimmick" as much as you like to believe they are.

"But it's high on playlists".. true, but curiosity plays a huge part in the first couple of days at least, playlisting just prolongs and sustains it's success. So tbh, I think the whole "too focussed on the gimmick" argument is weak. The song is a success in it's own term.. when people stream, they don't see the gimmick. They hear the song. Ofc it's not going to appeal to everyone straight away or ever, but to discredit the song and it's succeas "because it's too gimmicky" is a bit of a reach imo.

(I say this as someone who's on the fence about her new song)

What did they performed?

The current single - It's Not Living!

How was Sweetener a relative underperformance?

Wasnt it one of the most anticipated releases of 2018 and it didn't go platinum. I know sales are in the dumps but I think most expected it to go at least platinum.

That's something only two artist albums managed to achieve last year.

No. Who on earth would expect that lol? Even people like Rihanna have never accomplished that. Usually it's people like Ed Sheeran, Take That, Coldplay, Adele, etc. who you might expect to have one of the 2 best-selling albums of the year.

01. Ariana Grande - 7 Rings

06. Jax Years - Play

13. Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved

14. Mabel - Don't Call Me Up

21. CamelPhat & Cristoph - Breathe (feat. Jem Cooke)

28. The 1975 - It's Not Living (If It's Not With You)

29. Sub Focus & Dimension - Desire

32. Jack Savoretti - Candlelight

33. FISHER - Losing It

53. Sigrid - Don’t Feel Like Crying

84. Example - All Night

129. James Morrison - My Love Goes On (feat. Joss Stone)

Ariana has never been a huge album seller in the U.K. None of her previous albums have got to platinum despite now being out for years, even when downloads and album sales were higher. Sweetener achieved more ‘sales’ in a year than any of her previous ones did, even with My everything having two number ones in it’s year of release.

Not everything Ariana release smashes, you only have to look at the light is coming. Came out after NTLTC with the video and a Nicki feature and still tanked. I am not keen on this one but there are clearly people who like it. Still far too soon to label it a big hit though.

 14. Mabel - Don’t Call Me Up

She’s also at #43 on spotify which means she could debut inside the top 40

It didn’t sell a million copies in its first week in they.k.

Tbh has anyone not underperformed in albums sales this year, George Ezra aside no artists has exactly sold loads (mostly due to the albums market being redundant these days)

I'm surprised at the performance of the the Sweetener stuff as well... I thought she'd at least get the sympathy vote to be honest. NTLTC couldn't even hit the top!

NTLTC would have hit the top any other time of the year, it's been an absolutely humongous smash for her and was the perfect comeback.

Plus wasn't it like the 7th biggest hit of the year?
