I really wasn't sure on my first listen — the autotune is definitely a choice. Maluma sounds great.

Third listen in and I'm now declaring it her best lead single in ages! It's like a modern take on a Ray of Light track and that is no bad thing at all.

I agree with this. It's different for her and the most left-field thing she's done in years. I'm so glad it's not a reductive take on everything she's already done, like the last two albums.

The production is so lush, especially from the halfway point. It's even mastered properly! It's been a while.

I have one word to describe it “rubbish”. Compare that with stuff like frozen, like a prayer or hung up. Her voice is so processed and the rapper adds nothing to an already dire song.

I understand what you're saying, but not everyone can recreate classics like those. Especially this far into their career.

I'm glad she's doing something different and not retreading old ground, which is something we all love about Madonna. She has taken risks and taken new sonic directions throughout her career, but she's been failing at that for the last decade or so. It's about time she tried something new.

Exactly! For her to be over 30 years into her career and still doing something different to what we've heard before is astonishing, it being a great song just tops that off.

I kinda feel this is chasing trends rather than creating them though, Shakira has done this song a million times before and a million times better

hope it's a grower

I'm here for it! Definitely not what I expected or particularly like the other Latin hits currently. I don't think Maluma's parts compliment the track that well but the track does need a second person to bounce off - the ad-libs work! I can feel it being a grower but probably not a hit - a few of the YouTube comments are saying this sounds more like an album track which I can agree with!

Madonna has been doing Latin themed bops for decades. She walked so the pop girls today could run.

It’s very la Isla Bonita if it were a Ray of Light track. Maybe slightly too much Maluma but I LOVE.

Exactly!! It's very easy to say that this is chasing a trend just because Latin music is popular rn, but she did La Isla Bonita over 30 years ago. Plus this isn't really that commercial anyway, it's her at her best pushing the envelope a bit rather than just being a basic Latin tinged track.

Yeah I had my worries when I saw reggaeton popping up in descriptions but I thought Madonna has been inspired by Latin music throughout her career so had faith a return to the style would be true to her.

Exactly.

This also doesn't sound like the other reggaeton bops at all. It's dreamy and a lot more spacey than Chantaje etc. It's not chasing any trends, especially at 5 minutes long.

You've described the last decade of Madonna's output (well decade plus 1 year).

Top version is #21 in the UK.

I personally find it dreadful, major disappointment, like a bad cover of Shakira's La Tortura
She'll release a total shitfest of a song like Give Me All Your Luvin' as a lead and then she'll give us something like this as a lead which is actually really good!

Not surprised that this has had a divisive reaction. Personally I'm loving it, it's such a vibe! It's a fresh direction for her and pretty left-field, particularly for a lead (I wouldn't agree that this is trend chasing).

So excited for this era, she seems completely reinvigorated!
