Because of how much the occ hate her, the song and manipulate the Thurs streams to keep her down, plus force acr on her, arbitrarily changing the charts?

Omg occ are in bed with the tories who don’t want Mariah on top of the charts it’s so clear to me how dare they

Β

Occ more like ss am I right ladies

I'm not getting my hopes up for Mariah but I think it's silly to rule her out...!

Β

Quite so - it's not like she's the Sex Pistols... :kink:

Getting mad with Sheeran managing his 1999th UK number 1. :(

That will happen next week anyway after the Christmas music goes away, so no Ed fans need to worry. Ed & Stormzy can wait a week.

That one came all the way from the establishment themselves!!

The Sex Pistols were never in contention for No.1. It's a fallacy. There was no skullduggery needed. People in the industry who saw the midweeks say they were well behind Rod all week. Remember no forums then so very few people knew the midweeks.

There were no midweeks until roughly 1984, it was something that gallop introduced once the system started to become computerised. The record companies would have seen the panel sales every week for sure though.

but actually, looking at last year's data, seems like Ava should have been #1 by a much bigger margin than it did

Β

the total for Mariah on Spotify once halved translated into 26,750 sales, while Ava did 25,200... not even a 2k difference... double that considering the other outlets and you get 4-5k max... Ava did much better on iTunes to compensate that deficit, even only the gift card effect would have been enough

Β

so imho Ava sounds like a right winner for last year

100% wrong. It was Mariah's no.1 and it was stolen.

Β

Bringing in the 3-year ACR rule was completely random, out-of-the-blue and unjustified imo. Had that not happened Mariah would have smashed Ava's sales so definitely not the rightful winner in my eyes.

Β

We'll see what the margin is this year anyway. If it's close enough to be reasonably believable then the cynic in me will say it's anything but.

100% this, especially given how the uk charts have ALWAYS had old songs crop up again based on campaigns, etc. Taking that away is arbitrarily removing a charts institution - and it was LITERALLY all to stop Mariah.

It definitely was a bizarre rule to introduce and did seem solely aimed at stopping Christmas songs from doing too well. Which is odd really as Mariah or Wham reaching #1 after all this time would be a big story for them

It awkward though because without the ACR rule the whole top 15/20 may be Xmas songs year in year albeit for that one week.

Β

The finding that balance between representing their popularity without having them and potentially the same songs dominating each December.

ACR makes sense, cos we got a mixed chart of downloads and streams, were downloads count once, while streams count forever so you have to introduce caps, and ACR is a sort of cap...

but yes, should be applied to all songs, new or old, the 3 year rule is idiotic, and even more idiotic for >3 year old songs that have never charted before

That's the biggest problem for songs that didn't chart at the time. Would only take one amendment to the rules to mean that if they didn't chart in the top 40 they'd remain on SCR.

aren't charts supposed to represent the nation's listening/buying habits for that particular week...

Β

it's Xmas time and y'all have to deal with it. life neither has a pretty chart run nor is fair. Get yo OCDs in check x

This! The OCC shouldn't be policing our taste. Even if the ACR rule was overturned the second a song climbed into the top 10 Again AT ANY TIME!!, that would be fairer. But no. They hate Mariah.

What I can’t believe is that despite manipulation, the charts are still just as boring. People would actually take notice of Mariah got to no.1.
