Bit late now...

We have a Tory majority, Brexit will happen...

I guess we’re finishing this rotten year/decade with the only thing that can make it worse-another no.1 for Ellie Goulding :manson:

In line with brexit and this sort of UK decisions

In all fairness, those posts were pages ago and not used to bait other members unlike the recent one.

I think this mess has just proved the charts are no longer fit for purpose. We don’t really know what they’re trying to tell us anymore. Is it the most listening to song, or the most popular current hit? Or essentially an airplay chart without radio? Streams had to be represented in it as much as I’m not a fan but poor planning has lead to chart manipulation which is pointless it itself because no one takes notice of the chart outside of this forum. If anything, Mariah going to no.1 would have made people notice because it’s a song people actually like.

I’m wary of rule changes. If old tracks are removed entirely from the chart then we’ve taken a step backwards. Thinking back to how exciting it was in January 2007 when anything could chart makes you wonder what the point of constricting the chart further is.

They were pages ago and not used in the same way but it still shouldn't have been mentioned in the thread. Anyways, about the state of the current chart - most of the time this kind of thing isn't really a problem, it definitely hasn't been a sort of 'airplay chart without radio' except for this week where the influence of asking Alexa to play Christmas music was evident. Mariah being number one would probably have made news, but it wasn't to be. I am a little concerned about what this example might mean for other post-Christmas charts where artists can just release Amazon exclusives and almost pay their way into the charts but for most of the year a lot of people aren't asking such a general thing like 'play Christmas music' so there isn't really as much of an opportunity. Old songs fortunately haven't been removed entirely and so we can still end up with situations like last year where Three Lions managed to get to the top.

That was like 2 weeks ago.

nothing compares to the original

Anyway after this chart I fully expect the next chart rule will either be

a) streams from streaming service curated playlists to have a lower ratio than streams from user searches/user playlists

b) streams of older songs to have an even lower ratio than the current ACR.

c) removal of all old songs from the chart entirely

hopefully it is A – plus this would also give the Christmas songs another hit as I suspect a good percentage of them are just people sticking on playlists.

I was attempting to be circumspect by just using initials.

the thing is by applying a lower stream to playlists will indirectly punish Xmas songs cos no one searches for xmas songs, everybody goes to Christmas Hits and hits play

It may also move things along more in the actual chart though as a lot of the streams will also come from playlist plays.

Youtube UK Video Streams

25 December, Mariah 2,135 millons, Wham 1,181. 26 December Mariah 1,313, Wham 0,72.

Mariah was also #1 during the 24... it is impossible she droped from 5 to 19. She was #1 for sure and the streams robbed by OCC are enough to put her at #1. Don't know why they did it, Maybe Ellie should be 1 mandatory.

Am I the only one who doesn't just listen to playlists at Christmas lol? I compile my own playlist.

Also during the chart year people could easily ask Alexa to 'play top 40 hits', what happens then?

we should also consider that you can use a playlist actively or passively

I see at work that a lot of colleagues just go to a playlist and hit play and that's it

But I do use playlists but in an active way, so I choose what songs I wanna play from the playlist, I don't start with song 1, I skip songs, etc

so not sure how the OCC can distinguish that...

regarding Mariah's YT views, I guess those are also halved cos ACR also affects video streams

Oooh people are tweeting them about the video streams for Mariah, seems they included a cover version in error?

They really should address it, one tweet would do.

The trouble is those so called 'missing streams' from Jukebox Heaven as has already been pointed out several times wouldn't even cut the gap in half and that's only counting those as premium streams.

In terms of video streaming as far as I'm aware they only count streams from official accounts of said artist and there are other video sites as well as YouTube. I do love how people here think that OCC invented ACR due to 'hatred' of Mariah  As has been pointed out time and again Mariah wouldn't even be anywhere #1 if it wasn't for a form of playlist manipulation so in a way it should be Stormzy and Tones and I fans complaining as more of those people either actually bought or least consciously CHOSE to play and actually listen to their songs.

I'm starting to wonder if Sex Pistols sent the OCC letters back in 1977 after the myth that were denied #1 to not offend the Queen :P

If that's the case then it should affect the other christmas classics too. Why is Last Christmas #1, Fairytale of New York #5 and All I Want for Christmas #19 on that video chart when Mariah had more video streams than all the other christmas classics?

I don't think the Mariah Carey physical sales from her online store would count towards the chart. Many of Marillion's recent albums have low chart positions because their fans buy them direct from their online store which doesn't count towards the chart. I assume the same rule would apply to the singles chart.

They have counted to the chart, because the physicals weren't available anywhere else and she has registered 266 physical sales, as per Jay's post on the previous page. Most artist stores do count to the chart.
