That article confirms that they changed the entire chart rules to stop Mariah. Sigh. More lies from occ. We know you are desperate to stop Mariah. Let it go!!

He also post a contemporary chart without ACR tracks which is interesting and maybe what the chart will look like if the rules are changed going forward at Xmas:

I normally eschew "fantasy charts" but this is the one time of year we can be forgiven for it. Applying a filter which removes all ACR-ed festive singles, the "contemporary" Top 10 would actually look like this:

1: River - Ellie Goulding

2: Own It - Stormzy/Ed Sheera/Burna Boy

3: Happy Christmas (War Is Over) - John Legend

4: Before You Go - Lewis Capaldi

5: Don't Start Now - Dua Lipa

6: Roxanne - Arizona Zervas

7: Santa's Coming For Us - Sia

8: Dance Monkey - Tones & I

9: Everything I Wanted - Billie Eilish

10: Adore You - Harry Styles

So fair play, we only have to go down as far as Number 26 on the real chart to find our ten contemporary hits.

Yet the chart does not exist simply for contemporary hits, it's to reflect what's popular. Fair enough if ACR is used to bump down outgoing hits but quite honestly this chart looks farcical with Sia in the top 10...!

Wham! was the most streamed song including both audio AND video streams, and we've already established the video streaming chart was inaccurate. Mariah was the most streamed song on audio streaming services.

Here's the specific paragraph quoted:

"The craziest bit is that All I Want For Christmas Is You wasn't even the most-streamed single of the week. That honour goes to its perennial partner in crime Last Christmas by George Michael and Wham!, which this year celebrates an anniversary of its own. 35 years on from its first release, a year when it became stranded behind the original Band Aid single and became the biggest-selling Number 2 in chart history, Last Christmas this year breaks the all-time streaming record. The song was played a massive 17.1m times last week, edging its way past the 16.9m achieved by Ariana Grande with 7 Rings back in January 2019. For all that it is still only Number 3, simply because Mariah Carey had the edge over it in paid ales, enough as it turned out to notch up a slightly higher overall chart sale and relegating George and Andrew to Number 3."

Nearly as farcical with Ellie as No1 😂

Yup, that paragraph ignores the video streaming error and the fact Mariah is #1 on the audio streaming chart too - https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/audio-streaming-chart/

That’s not right - Ellie is #10 in the streaming chart, Stormzy is #20.
hmm I somehow mixed up the charts in my mind and thought Stormzy was in the top 9, thanks for correcting me.
From James Mastersons column:

"Despite the outrage you may see from the puritans online, this week demonstrates the rule working precisely as intended. Permanent ACR may have done little to stem the tidal wave of older hits dominating the charts at Christmas, but it has ensured that a strong and popular contemporary hit single has been allowed to emerge from the mess. We don't need a singles chart to tell us that people like listening to All I Want For Christmas Is You at Christmas time, that's a fact which is pretty self-evident. This week we have one which tells us that Ellie Goulding has the most popular current hit, and that is why she rightly is Number One and not an overplay hawk from another generation"

He also states that Wham was the most streamed song of the week.

The tone of that commentary is terrible tbh.... ‘emerge from the mess’ and ‘overplay hawk from another generation’ makes me worry what their plans are for older songs going forward.

He’s also basically saying Alexa Goulding is the most popular NEW song at the moment (Even though millions and millions of music users can’t access it!) and that’s why she’s #1?!

He does state that many playlists lead to passive listens in other parts.

Does he work for the OCC?

except she doesn't? take away passive streams and Stormzy would be #1. don't quite get this argument.

I know I said I'd prefer Ellie than Stormzy at #1 based on personal preference but if we're making the argument that the most popular current hit should be #1 then Stormzy should've spent the last 2 weeks at #1.

No

The poster above kind of suggested he was when stating 'goodness knows what they have planned from the tone of the article'!

Meh, James can think and say what he likes, but this certainly isn't a take I agree with.

I feel like he's choosing to overlook the factors that lead to Ellie being at #1. He's criticising the old Christmas songs, but a very strong reason why Ellie even made it to #1 is because she was positioned at the top of Amazon's Christmas playlists of all the popular old songs that people actually wanted to hear, as well as being interspersed amongst them while Alexa played them at random.

The "most popular current hit" this week that's been achieved in a conventional way is clearly Stormzy - Own It.

Who is that James moron?

Anyways, Mariah's team looked into it and were informed that the Official Charts noticed the dip in Mariah's video position and calculated the Jukebox Heaven points into Mariah's total. That is what they are claiming they did but it doesn't add up. If they noticed her position was wrong why didn't they simply correct it before issuing the charts? She would have been number one on the video chart and number one on the main streaming chart. She streamed more than Wham last week, that is a fact, Youtube and Kworbs data show that she was the most watched video of the week. The OC deliberately removed sales from Mariah to give Ellie the number one. Disgusting.

It's probably best to read he whole article online but he's trying to make a point more about ACR and SCR tracks which is what I read from it.

Nevertheless, it's probably worth mentioning Ellie joins the list of "fake" #1s, that only made it because of another song (or songs) being on ACR...

DJ Khaled feat. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller - Wild Thoughts

Calvin Harris feat. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry & Big Sean - Feels

Rudimental feat. Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplen - These Days

Jess Glynne - I'll Be There

Ed Sheeran feat. Khalid - Beautiful People

Ellie Goulding - River

I don't agree with his point at large anyway tbh, I think the 3 year cut off is a very arbitrary length of time.

He missed out Katy Perry - Cozy Little Christmas, that should be at #9 with Billie at #10!

They quite literally didn't, the video streaming figure attributed to her is that of #19 on the video streaming chart :')

Wow at OCC outright lying about that. :') They're so incompetent, jeez.
