The interesting thing about the quote from Merkel is that it conveniently ignores the fact that under German law, Trump would have been booted years ago for hate speech. But maybe that’s it, maybe that’s her point. That in Germany there’s a legal basis and process but in the US there isn’t and that it’s left up to the platforms is problematic (which I’d be inclined to agree with)

The hate speech laws here are interesting. If you make a report on Twitter you have to sign a legal document, after picking what part of the legislation it comes under. Then if it’s deemed to be fine, Twitter can actually disregard future reports from you. It’s weird. Actually really hard to decide what part of the law it comes under as well so I stopped reporting hate speech on Twitter because the German process is so laborious. Although there are less nazis because the algorithm filters them already in accordance with German law

Also the English media are reporting „freedom of opinion“ as if it is freedom of speech. It’s not. It’s a different but similar concept. Freedom of opinion is enshrined in the German basic law, freedom of speech is not.

I cant see more protests in the build up to the inauguration as they will at least be ready this time.

Good to see that police are being investigated who had selfies with the insurrectionists last week!

I agree that he shouldn't have used the last few words about shooting. He could have said "when the looting starts we will get tougher" Something like that.

Surely he shouldn't have been threatening to shoot his own citizens in the first place, regardless of the language used?

Some of the rioters may be facing lengthy prison sentences - under laws Trump introduced by decree

Uff, the talentless hack writers of Game of Thrones could learn from this real-life poetic justice.

Ashli Babbitt and all the other fatalities in the Washington protests should of course be honoured but not in anything involving an 'armed protest' in my opinion. Hopefully any protests that do take place will be peaceful.

She was a terrorist.

We going to have a memorial for the ISIS bombers in London any time soon?

One dumb white bitch unjustly dies and she’s a f***ing martyr. Dozens of POC die each year by police brutality and no one cares.
Biden's inauguration will be shown live on both BBC1 and ITV1 as well as Sky News with the build-up starting at 4pm next Wednesday.

Ayanna Pressley realising, whilst hiding, that the panic buttons in her office had all been torn out. They managed to find the office of James Clyburn — which is unmarked and unknown to the public. It's not hard to imagine what could have happened if they came across Ilhan Omar.

It's not just Trump that needs dealing with — there are members of Congress that need to resign or be removed.

Senate too, Hawley and Cruz are very culpable. Mass removal from office for anyone complicit, there needs to be examples made, and not just that done by impeaching a departing president, as much as that would be pleasing and it looks like certain snakes (McConnell) are realising that supporting impeachment is now politically viable, having politicians who encouraged this still serving in high office is yet more pressing.

Very alarming how close it could have been to a political assassination.

I have been saying for YEARS that the far right have been emboldened. We have a paradox of tolerance on our hands in dealing with them, and so I absolutely support deplatforming them so that their dangerous, facile views don't get airtime.
My favourite takeaway from today is that MADONNA was brought up as a KEY INSTIGATOR if last weeks violence. She isn’t even relevant to her own CHILDREN anymore let alone anyone else.

Good news. : )

A supermajority is needed in the Senate (67/100) so this is unlikely to carry unfortunately.

As if Madonna saying something mean about Trump in 2016 was actually used as part of the impeachment defence.
