As our largest trading partner, they could easily raise tariffs. Not to mention put sanctions on us like they have done to places like Iran & Russia. If we were to break the treaty, we would also anger the US and it's entirely possible they could also put sanctions on us. If the EU/US put sanctions on us, the UK would be crippled. We could see the financial sector lose out to EU competitiors and US banks, which would be one of the biggest issues as the financial sector in the UK generates large amounts of tax money for the treasury.

Thanks for the clarification.

Chris Grayling has got a new Brexit job. 7 hours a week for 100k a year.

From BBC News.

Ex-Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has landed a £100,000 job advising the owner of some of the UK's top ports.

The Conservative MP is working for Hutchison Ports, which operates Harwich and Felixstowe among other terminals.

Why would a company choose to pay a man who, so far, has failed to demonstrate any sort of expertise in any subject?

How many more times can Chris Grayling and Dido Harding continue to fall upwards?
No, not at all but is there anything realistically that they can do. I'm asking a genuine question. Some international court maybe.

I think they're frozen out of the International Court of Justice because that is a dispute resolution mechanism between UN member states only (the EU is obviously not one). The European Court of Justice is probably their option to bring a claim against the UK. Any legal action against the UK would probably spell an end to trade deal negotiations so imagine the EU won't be racing to do it until the end of the year when it will be clearer if a trade deal will or won't be signed in time for the deadline.

Erm, he has CONTACTS.

A joke on Twitter earlier. At interview he was asked what he knew about ports. He said "Well a good tawny one is the best" :D

Erm, he has CONTACTS.

To be fair, this is very beneficial when public procurement in England is broken and the cronyism and corruption is rife even by Tory government standards.

Remember that week when Dominic Cummings wanted to personally send a 'hard rain' on the upper echelons of the civil service but it just turned out he wanted to give big jobs to his friends.

The head of a hauliers organisation on LBC has explained that due to Brexit lorry drivers will have to apply for permission to enter Kent.

He said applications will to have to made electronically before drivers leave their pick up point and if they get a red notice must not enter Kent. He suggested using Vehicle Recognition software vehicles entering Kent without a visa will be stopped, assumed turned back, fined or confiscated.

Johnson has solved the border in the North Sea by moving it internally to the borders of Kent.

Wasn't that always gonna be the case? I mean they did build thoselorry parks for a reason right?
Lorry parks I think are for the outbound cargo because lord knows the French will be enjoying enforcing the external border. I absolutely support them in this. They should make it painful
Let's hope it all goes smoothly apart from maybe a few teething problems at first. That's to be expected I think.

Wait so it took them this long to think about inboud border patrol????

The Road Haulage Association has described its meeting with Michael Gove about post-Brexit arrangements as "a washout".

The body said there had been "no clarity" from the senior minister on how border checks will operate when the transition period ends after December.

Although the UK has left the EU, it has continued following some EU rules during the transition period.

A Cabinet Office spokesperson said the meeting had been "constructive"

Ex ambassador Ivan Rogers believes that the UK will walk away and blame the EU.

“Johnson wants the EU ideally to fail: he thinks it’s a wrong turning, not just for the UK but for the whole continent. Cummings wants, I think, a rerun of last year. He wants culture wars, a fight against the House of Lords, against the judiciary. He’s not stupid. He knows that he can’t easily sell a skinny free trade agreement as a triumph and that the British public will see in January and beyond what damage is done to the economy.

“So he is asking: why go there? No deal might be a bit worse, but at least he will be able to portray that as the fault of the EU. The line would be that all we were ever asking for is what they gave to Canada. It’s not true, but it sounds plausible.”

It's been obvious from the day after the referendum that the Tories would blame the EU. Their "we hold all the cards" nonsense ended the moment the polls closed on referendum day.

For the first time a British cabinet minister has admitted there may be no trade deal by the end of the year.

Environment Sec. George Eustice said to the BBC'S Nick Robinson.

"There will be an outbreak of common sense and some kind of free trade agreement will ultimately be put together. It just might not be there in time for January."

There will be an outbreak of common sense

I'd rather bet on Johnson letting half of Britain starve to death than using 'common sense'.
