Everyone is going to suffer, but if they can't cope with a bit of boredom for the sake of helping people live then there really is no hope. Why should we have fewer restrictions in place or for a lesser time when Italy and China have had longer and stricter restrictions??

So sad we live in the times of dial-up internet and floppy disks :(

I agree people should be abiding by the rules but I don't think it's fair to dismiss people's troubles as just a bit of boredom. It's much more as that.

I can only imagine people being stuck with toxic and abusive people for so long but that's pretty much the only exception I would allow personally really. Anything else is just first world problems and I'm trying to say this in the most patronising way possible. :')

I feel more needs to be done to prevent some shops persisting with this needless minimum payment to use card. Was out a couple of days ago just bought a few bits and the guy insisted on £3 minimum payment. So switched to cash, again not what should be being encouraged at the moment but why do people keep putting up such barriers.

The last time I went in Asda, last week and Tesco, previous week, they were cash only with a lot of people with no card very disappointed.

People eventually, after a few weeks, just won't stand for it. They'll take it out on those they live with, drink more and wlll break it anyway. According to a lot it's their basic human right to see family and friends which in a way you can't argue with. Partners aren't going to go months without meeting either. Bet loads are doing it quietly now. Cop hotlines are apparently inundated with callers trying to dob people in.

I'm actually quite enjoying the quarantine now, except for the groups drinking in the parks to replace the pubs.

The spoiled people screaming over this quarantine are quite pathetic.

Being in a house with all manners of luxuries, with the only danger being the virus, pale in comparison to other historical moments of seclusion. In fact, there is no comparison. I'm sure people can survive being in a house with a tv and internet and books for a few weeks.

If you see those you should report them. The hotlines are for that. Not really for people spying on and reporting their neighbours but for reporting groups.

introverts are prob at ease with their own company, generally, and more likely to be able to deal with self-isolation I'd guess, the outdoor types can still go outside for exercise, it's those that want pubs and clubs, gangs of mates and crowds around them that will struggle.

The concept of being bored is completely alien to me. Lack of time to do all the things I want to do is my problem.

Re: seeing partners you don;t live with, yes that's a thing going on, it's hard to police. There's a significant birthday coming up next week and I want to go to at least relieve the self-isolation, as there's not much else you can do to celebrate. It means driving to London though, which is problematic and very much not going out just for food or exercise.

When to start lifting the restrictions is one of the most difficult questions for governments everywhere. That's why Trump's comments are so utterly stupid and potentially positively dangerous. People's expectations have to be managed. Our government has avoided any real hint of when this might happen and that is probably the right thing to do. I suspect most people are expecting the period to be extended until at least the end of the month but we should be prepared for it to go on for rather longer than that.

As far as I know, there has been no announcement about the VE Day commemorations. A decision to cancel them will be a pretty clear sign that the restrictions have some way to go yet.

Same goes for other country leaders who did absolutely nothing.

Israel is such a great example of how to act fast. They barely had 10 deaths and the entire country went to lockdown immediately. Thousands die to America - restaurants are still open.

Yes Israel has done quite well and some Eastern European countries like Latvia have too and Ireland too to some extent.

I know Italy was just very unlucky in getting the virus very early but it seems like Spain did not act quickly enough hence the worrying numbers now.

There's a long thread on Digital Spy, well several in fact, about the lockdown and 8 days in people are going crazy with boredom. Can you wonder that they want to pop out even for 10 minutes to the shop? Also one on Mumsnet with a mum saying her usually docile husband is shouting and screaming at the kids for the least little thing. I fear for the mental health of a lot of kids in this. We need to lift this lockdown as soon as we possibly can or everyone will go stark staring mad. Am not bothered really as only used to go shopping and walking the dog anyway and can still do that. I know it'll be extended another 3 weeks but after that they should relax the family and friends part or people will just break it anyway. Saturday will be a nice sunny day apparently, upto 21c here in the South. Can imagine a few people breaking the lockdown then and cops going to break up a few gatherings. I know people, wife's friends, who are visiting each other. She won't join them though which is sensible.

Have even heard of someone wanting to get a dog just to be able to go out during this. It was pointed out that you can't take them out of the door until they've had all their jabs anyway. They can walk mine if they like!

Mods. Sorry for the second post in a row. Forgot and wanted to answer Liam. Won't do it again.

I get being bored and wanting to pop out but people are allowed walks! I just don't think it's really sensible to go into a more enclosed space like a shop, which puts so much more risk on others even with social distancing, if you don't need.

ITV has announced that the BGT auditions which are all already recorded, will go ahead as planned in April and May but the live shows, semi-finals and final, will take place hopefully in the Autumn. It was thought a bit unfair on those who got through to the live semis to cancel it altogether.

100% THIS!!

Also please don't go to London. It is struggling with the outbreak.

Not being able to see my boyfriend is what I'm struggling with most  I'm not that fussed about the pubs and clubs and stuff, I love going when they're there but I just hate feeling like we really took for granted being able to see people when we want :(

I agree, it's something we all need to get used to and find other ways of occupying our time, but I think we can still empathise with others who are struggling with the lack of social life. I've been sticking to the measures put in place but I've found myself getting really down, particularly on a night time. I live on my own and whilst I can message people online, they're not always available and it's fair to say an online communication isn't quite the same as in person. Not being able to work means I feel like I have very little purpose and I get to the end of the day feeling like I've not achieved anything. I appreciate that's something I have to deal with, just as everyone else has to, but I can understand why people would be tempted to bend the rules a bit and I don't think it's fair to underplay the situation.

I'm not dismissing people's problems, everyone has it tough and like Pavel said I'm sure people who live with abusers or in a toxic environment have it even worse and I do feel for them. My point really was, what makes the UK so special that we think we're above that, it's clearly worked for China and shows signs of working for Italy so whilst it is undoubtedly hard and difficult, I do think people should abide to it as much as they can.

Boredom is also pretty alien to me, I’ve been fine since lockdown and I haven’t even done everything I could be doing yet. I’m still working but not actually having to be there most of the time means I can work quicker and do lots of things I don’t have time for when I’m actually going to work. The way work was going just prior to school closure, I actually think my mental health has benefited from me not being there.

I do live alone though and sometimes I wish for some company-I kinda wished I’d gotten a puppy prior to lockdown, not for walks as it’d have been too young, but for the company. But I’m perfectly fine with my own company for the majority of the time and I’ve been FaceTiming family and friends and messaging people, not to mention being in contact with colleagues and students every day.

I get it’s not easy and for some people who are suffering domestic abuse it’s going to be actual Hell. But a lot of people on my social media are just going on about how bored they are and if they’re bored now, they haven’t seen anything yet.

The excuses we're getting at work from some of the old people now is just ridiculous. We're now on reduced hours and only allowing absolutely essential transactions (if you can do it another way then basically, f*** off), but Sandra 'just prefers to come into the bank' instead of going to the ATM, and Margaret can't be bothered waiting in the queue at the ATM. I even had an old man come to the door today just wanting his passbook updated and nothing else. Like, are these people for real?

Some elderly people need to wake the f*** up and realise the gravity of the situation.

True, I don't think you were meaning to dismiss people's problems so sorry it sounded like that, it was more the "can't cope with a bit of boredom" comment I took issue with. If it was just boredom I could get over it, but it's the loneliness and lack of purpose then worth that's the problem, so I can see why others may pop to the shop or sneak to see their family or friends if they're feeling the same. Some people do take the mick with the rule breaking though and everyone needs to make a conscious effort to stick to them because, as you say, it's working for other countries and the more people sticking to the rules can hopefully mean the sooner we'll be seeing the positive effects.

Yes so am I contenting myself in the garden on decent weather days reading and watching things I would never have really noticed before such as the big queen bumblebees that are around at the moment.

Yeah I feel you and I think everyone is struggling with that, I am and I'm having down days just like anyone. We have to be thankful we live in an age where we can remotely talk and see our loved ones as a way of coping and to not feel completely alone. I think if I lived alone I'd go a bit crazy, so I feel for people in your situation.
