Boris on TV now speaking about the vaccine. Not ready yet but hopefully not too long. We must still follow the rules and not let out guard down.

Pfizer have said their vaccine kills 90% of Covid in the body/

Vaccines dont kill virusses, they trigger your body to develop its immunesystem to be ale to withstand an infection. It has offered effective protection in 90% of the cases. Only 64 infections out of a total 44k people vaccinated

That can’t be right can it? 64 infections out of 44,000 is 0.145%, so would indicate a 99.85% success rate?

No, because most of those 44,000 wouldn’t have got it with or without the vaccine.

The 90% figure is based off the number of people who get infected when given the placebo vaccine rather than the actual vaccine. This is what The Guardian state:

The interim analysis looks at how many of those who got infected with Covid-19 had had the new vaccine and how many had the placebo. So far, 94 people have become infected with Covid-19 – this is three times more than the company originally planned, but since the analysis shows that 90% had not received the vaccine, it implies that no more than eight people had received it.

To confirm its efficacy rate, Pfizer said it would continue the trial until there were 164 Covid-19 cases among participants in vaccinated and non-vaccinated groups. Given the recent rise in US infection rates, that number could be reached by early December, Gruber said.

We've both decide we won't have it. As wife says, they usually test vaccines far longer and it's too risky. A lady I know in the US will refuse it too, same thinking really.

Yeah they would have looked at short term side effects but might be too early to know whether there are long term side effects or not.

I’m cautious to celebrate this news but hopefully it’s a genuine good sign. I’m worried about my parents. They’ve become quite jaded after 8 months in isolation and are talking of not bothering with a vaccine when it arrives. My mum in particular is vulnerable but I feel my dad is driving this feeling. I had to tell them off the other week because they were talking Covid conspiracy theories.

If it is approved safe by the approver, there won't be any long term side effects. Anyone who is offered the vaccine and who doesn't take it is daft and a conspiracy nutjob. I can understand people being cautious about a new vaccine, but if its deemed safe, its safe. How many vaccines have you seen with long term side effects?

I think we can all agree this is good news about Viagra manufacturer Pfizer beating off stiff competition in the race for a vaccine.

Haha :D

Anyway I think the good news is this lockdown will likely be the last (they may extend if 2-3 weeks) national lockdown. The lateral flow tests sound good as well, everyone that tests positive from a lateral flow test in Liverpool then takes a lab test to verify the readings currently to check how accurate they are.

It will still be a bit of a crap winter with the restrictions, but fingers crossed there is lots of light in the tunnel now. It's a good job the Bank of England printed us some more money to support furlough etc. - plenty of reasons to be optimistic now.

I think there will probably have to be another circuit breaker lockdown after Christmas probably as cases go up again.

New restrictions here until 15 January. No bars and restaurants and shit after 11pm. Lovely.

Doubt it. I can see another lockdown happening early next year after the Christmas/New Years parties and meet ups followed by everyone returning to work/school/uni.

We tried that in Berlin!! Our cases doubled

Potentially, but I think if the lateral flow tests are proved effective and don't need false positives/negatives they become a bit of a game changer if they can roll them out to schools and universities. Personally, I suspect we will still have lockdowns but not on a national level - I think we will see a Tier 4 created which is a regional lockdown. There are some places which are just impossible to seemingly get the infection rates down.

I don't suppose Johnson has acknowledged that the German company that developed the vaccine only exists because of immigration. Indeed, one of the founders of the company wouldn't exist without immigration.

The good news is that the vaccine will be manufactured in Belgium. Thanks to the EU, that means the refrigerated lorries carrying supplies to the UK won't have to hang around for ages at the border at great expense. Oh, wait,....

The news is fantastic and BioNTech have said they expect, by themselves, to have vaccinated 70% of Germany by summer. So I’m assuming that we’re gonna get a hefty chunk of the initial production in return for the funding the federal government gave.

City today said that by December they will have a system in place and read to vaccinate 20000 a day with 400000 being vaccinated in phase one of the most vulnerable and key workers.

So nice to see the light at the end of the Tunnel now. Although my family and Friends are being bumped from tier 2 to 3 in Scotland on Friday which is a bit eeek. The 3rd tier seems to be really good at getting a plateau but no where seems to be falling in Scotland. NHS GGC seems to consistently be around 400-500 cases a day. Got to wonder when tier 4 gets broken out to quash the numbers and actually see a decline in cases

Tbf everything that I have read suggests we will only have small doses of the Pfizer vaccine and the preference is for the Oxford one. I don't know the prices are factored in, but I've seen it suggested the Oxford trial one will be manufactured at £2.81 and the Pfzier one is closer to £30. Obviously I assume they will pay whatever cost to at least get some doses, but the cost and logistics of the vaccine suggest our preference would be for another vaccine.
