I've had time to decide that, on this issue alone, he didn't learn from the Cummings fiasco. Some of them, like lifting lockdown too soon, he has learnt something.

It's not really black or white whether he did wrong today. Gove has furiously defended him saying he needs to check up on all the nations as to how Covid's affecting them. A Welsh trip next maybe?

He can check up over the phone or the internet. I think I speak for Wales when I say we don’t want to see him.

I keep a daily diary and this time last year I had made a note of the top headline which was "100+ people die of Coronavirus" - goodness, look where we're at a year later :(
That Parody Boris Twitter is hilarious.

Because it tells things how they actually are, not how Johnson wants to present them.

It feels like the Novavax vaccine may be the biggest breakthrough yet given it can be stored at fridge temperature, it’s more effective than Oxford and it’s been tested against the UK variant.
Absolutely, but what’s the situation in terms of people who have the Pfizer one or ON one? Would they then get both?

Even better news just in. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine (the trial I'm involved in) has proved to be highly effective in a single dose. The UK has ordered 30m doses (a figure which looks a lot better if only one dose is required), the EU have ordered 400m. The trial I am part of will show whether it is even more effective after two doses and I was one of the first to get a second shot (which may, of course, have been a placebo) in the UK. I asked about progress on Wednesday and was told about the single-dose test but didn't expect a result so soon.

According to the UK Government's official dashboard, the amount of people testing positive daily for COVID-19 has collapsed from 20k to just under 4k between 26th and 27th. I'm presuming that this is due to missing data or data being late to be reported, because it seems quite optimistic.

Sounds a bit strange when infections have been 20-25k most of this week going up and down each day.

All the vaccine stuff is good news as we're going to need billions of jabs to get us out this! The only worrying thing for me is that in a lot of the information I have read, they are concerned the vaccines become a lot less effective against the South African variant.

Yes, the South African variant seems to be causing greater concern than the Kent one in relation to vaccines.

The stuff on the Kent one looks ok from all the preliminary data I have seen - slightly less effective but not by a great deal. The SA one is really worrying though.

It’s looking more and more likely we are gonna have an effective two tier world. One where there is a vaccinated population free to circulate but with the global south cut off over variants that are vaccine resistant until the jags are adapted or case numbers are brought under control in an elimination strategy in the impacted areas. Not great for global prosperity.

You're getting your tables confused. The one you're talking about is the specimen date table - which logs the date in which all the positive tests were conducted. The reason the figure drops from 20k to 4k is because there tends to be a 2-3 day lag between test and report of positive case, ofc because not all tests deliver results on the same day.

The table directly below records the daily recorded cases. The best way to see how many cases we're seeing is to look at the 7 day average on this. It's 28,584, but I'd expect it to look more like 20k in a couple of days.

:D

Notwithstanding the potential problem with the South African variant, there is some hope. With the two new vaccines getting closer to approval, the UK and EU are now set to have more than enough vaccines to cover the whole adult population. That, and the WHO scheme specifically set up to help the developing world (and in which the UK and EU are participating with the USA under Biden also likely to join) may mean a wider distribution of the vaccine is not as far away as feared.

2023.. that's quite far away IMO. : (

The lack of global coordination, and total self interest is disappointing.

I'm hoping that today's news might mean that 2023 may prove to be pessimistic. I won't be holding my breath though.

Never mind less rich countries getting vaccinated, France is going to have all hell on with their own President being a dozy prick

Macron on AZ/Oxford: “Today everything suggests that it is almost ineffective for those over 65, and some say over 60.” https://www.ft.com/content/9002da7d-6616-33...ae34#post-60129

Hours later, the EMA regulator says its effective. Absolute moron, this is the sort of shite our government officials would have anhiliated for.
