Just your opinion. As Sajid Javid said at the weekend, we have to now learn to live with Covid like we do the flu. Businesses like night clubs, theatres etc, can't go on being closed forever or only being a third full. They won't ever re-open. Social distancing is to end completely on 19th in pubs and also schools but Boris thinks that'll be in the new term in Sept.

It’s not an opinion the vast majority of virologists and scientists state that mask wearing should stay in place to give protection so it’s Johnson who is putting his political opinion front and centre of this announcement.

Can you please stop trolling  Blojo is no hero. He is going against the science AGAIN because his oligarch masters demanded him to, now thwt they have their vaccines and are feeling safe. To be honest, I agree with thr Sage scientist. If we all just wore masks on public transport indefinitely, we would get fewer colds and flu anyway!

 Have you not read my previous posts the other day? This goes for you all by the way. I am on PRE-MOD which means that all my posts have to be checked by a moderator before they appear on the boards. So I can't troll or the mods wouldn't let my post through would they.

Where did I say Boris is a hero in my post? I didn't. Yes, the Government does seem to be going against the scientists this time. Chris Whittey has said so in fact. Wonder if Javid has anything to do with that.

Just watching Javid's Covid statement in the Commons and he does seem less cautious than Hancock.

Edited by common sense

I have absolute whiplash from the tonal shift in government messaging post-Hancock — a mess.

Same, worries me at the right wing nature of Javid although there’s obviously no evidence it’s because of him at this point!

Well the cynic would say it is convenient that Hancock has gone after someone leaked a video of him and now it's no holds barred. Almost like someone was a bit of an obstacle.

It's akin to one great big chicken pox party now for us all to catch it over the summer. Javid isn't even that ideologically right-wing, but he has PM ambitions and that people that hold the power to get him on the ticket do have that ideology.

Boris and Javid do seem to be following th tun gbe example of America where the government said vaccinated people dont have to wear masks any more. I think in America though that was just said to increase vaccination rates where traditionally there is a lot of anti-vaxx sentiment.
America is smashing its vaccine rollout, and it followed the science (4 weeks between jabs). You can turn up at a pharmacy and get the vaccine. The UK's approsch was INITIALLY good, but hss been shown to be far worse than the EU snd Ametica's. Blojo needs to get these infection rates down.

In a Murdoch paper no less. The same organisation that didn't spill details about Gove and Vine's marriage break up even though they knew about it for months. 'When people outlive their use that's how they are got rid off. The interesting question is about how much Johnson himself is behind this new direction.

For all his faults, Hancock did at least act as if public health was his main concern, as should be expected of a Health Secretary. Javid seems less keen to champion the cause of his department and appears to be more keen on the interests of the department he used to run, albeit not for long.

Covid is not like flu. Covid is far more contagious for one. Secondly, it’s more deadly too. Thirdly, there is also the impact of long covid which has affected people of all age groups including young people. Removing all restrictions will have a detrimental impact and lead to more deaths and hospital admissions, putting additional pressures on the NHS. 40% of adults still aren’t fully vaccinated and even if you’ve had both jabs, you can still catch covid and be unwell.

The British medical association has already warned against this approach and Israel had to reinstate compulsory mask wearing in public places following a surge in cases.

The Government wants us to catch it, which is probably the right thing to do.. but when the vaccination numbers are higher and not now. We are basically part of an experiment right now for the next 6-7 weeks before schools go back. Not quite sure cases will get to 100,000 per day, but we won't be far off. Anyone who hasn't been vaccinated is a sitting duck right now.

100,000 cases a day? That is terrifying. No, we can't live under a Rock forever, but the idea that we just go back 100% to how things were when there is still so much we don't know about this disease(because that's what it is) is insane.

I'm seeing so much of "oh well..we've tried, we just have to get on with it now." Just.....no. There is so much the government didn't try or didn't do.

Disgraceful.

It's making me anxious to go away, I was only gonna go to somewhere in the UK for a short break (when I'm fully vaccinated ofc.), but God knows how high cases will get over the next month :/

wearing a mask to keep others safe is not a big deal. Anyone who moans about them is a total selfish wimp. "Better you die than I get mildly inconvenienced" says an awful lot about them as human beings. If wearing masks was not effective then medical workers and the rest of the world would not be wearing them.

As a carer of 2 vulnerable parents, I'm quite happy to go out amongst crowds of people being careful, the risks are relatively low. Going out now amongst groups of people hacking all over everything no holds barred is not an option, so I won't be going to the cinema, pubs, concerts (and spending my cash) using public transport, or letting people in the house if rates start to become troubling, unless I know where they've been or unless they wear a mask. That also applies to planes and holidays. If sensible precautions are dropped then I won't be using the services of those companies, and I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way, so the expected "boost" to the economy will quickly go tits up as the hospitals get over-filled yet again.

And as far as people making comments at anyone else for applying the freedom to wear a mask to keep others safe, then I suggest using a variation of my intended comment in reply if anyone says a word like that to me:

"I'm wearing a mask to keep my at risk dependant elderly parents safe because I'm not a selfish c**t."

It's sort of implying people who don''t might be selfish c**ts without actually saying they are. If they get shitty and say "are you calling me a..." etc you nicely say "did I say you were?!" to which the answer is "no".

Well it would appear they are following their original plan of ‘herd immunity’ but it carries many risks as already highlighted and is totally unnecessary.

It's what needs to be done though, I think, from what I have read amongst the science. The problem is rather than stringing it out over 4-6 months as we should be doing, alongside the vaccine rollout, we're seemingly doing it over 4-6 weeks. Seems like we're all gonna get a bout of covid over the summer although should be mild if you're double jabbed.

I'd argue the seeds have already been sowed for a while - Silverstone at full capacity etc. Wembley at about 80% full.
