Rational people might think that the fact that we shared data with the EU helped as well as the fact that, unlike the EU, we didn't bother asking for any additional data. They might also think that rather more of the credit should go to the Turkish/German and Austrian scientists who, with the help of EU funding, actually developed it.

Well we did very well to get this far without doing so, but today we sent a year group home to self isolate for two weeks.

Year groups are in a bubble. So Year 10 are isolating for two weeks. The siblings of Year 10 are still coming in though.

Wales sounds to be in a bad way with First Minister saying hospitals are full with Covid victims and ambulance services so stretched that they can't get to heart attacks, strokes etc.

Boris and Hancock should send more help then to Wales in the form of nurses, beds and ambulances and paramedics then. Take them temporarily from areas that aren't overstretched.

As ever, the government hasn't exactly helped itself. There is a natural sense of unease about a vaccine that has been approved in record time. That unease can only be compounded when the government tries to claim some of the credit, fuelling suspicions that the regulator has been put under pressure by a government not exactly renowned for its honesty.

 

Just in case they hadn't bungled it enough, we then get Johnson making ridiculous claims such as saying that we now have "the sure and certain knowledge that we will succeed" in getting life back to normal by the spring. Why does he keep making these promises that cannot possibly be delivered? The government's (highly ambitious) target is to get everyone over 50, as well as vulnerable people under 50, vaccinated by Easter. That still leaves millions more to do.

 

It suggests then that once enough people over 50 and vulnerable people are vaccinated then they will may open up the economy, particularly hospitality, back to normal again. :unsure:

We went down yesterday to the undertakers where our daughter's ashes are kept. A couple came over to talk to us and sit down but kept their distance. Their 28 year-old daughter died from Covid last week. Her mum was crying her eyes out. She just went to the hospital for a blood test and she must have caught it there despite wearing a mask. They are so upset but still had time to ask about our daughter. They say their daughter had everything, good job, money, long-term fiance, own house and just gone like that at just 28 within days. So sad. :(

According to one expert quoted in the Observer today, that is a distinct possibility. He seems very excited about the possibilities offered by the technology behind the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.
