January 18, 20214 yr Imagine not accepting that doing that is more difficult for someone of 75 (particularly if they don't drive) than it is for someone of 25. I never said that it applies to everyone. Over here the vaccines are available to virtually everybody who wants it at this point so I wasn't coming for the older generation. January 18, 20214 yr I HATE the click baiting and scare mongering headlines on Facebook like 'ANOTHER ______ DEAD AND _____ TEST POSITIVE FOR VIRUS!!" without bothering to mention the fact that new positive cases in the UK are plummeting (we've went from 65K a day to 37K a day in a matter of ten days) and the deaths this week are from being infected weeks ago. What irritates me even more is that nobody knows how to read data and trends and so many people completely refuse to be educated or spoken sense into. Some girl was leaving comments underneath these headlines implying everything is hopeless and we're never going to improve and when I sent her a message explaining the data and tried to reassure her and make her feel better, she completely misunderstood what I said and thought I wasn't taking the virus seriously and 'how dare you accuse me of scare mongering others, I've saw so many people die from Covid, I should come to your village and punch your face in you rat'. I genuinely think some people enjoy the drama this brings and don't want to be told any good news. It's fine if they want to work themselves up in to a panic but it's completely irresponsible for the media to constantly post these headlines with no context and then for everyone to comment underneath making everyone else scared and panicked.

Sadly, this has indeed shown how poor some people's mathematical skills are. Far too many people seem to take pride in saying they were never any good at maths.
January 18, 20214 yr Some people will be a bit unlucky then and their vaccine appointment will be at 2 or 3am in the morning! I will turn up at any point of the day or night that I’m told to get a jag. If that is what it takes then so be it
January 19, 20214 yr Any time of the day, I'd be more happy to have the vaccine. I'm sure they'll change it if you can't or don't want to go then. I wouldn't go in the night. Like my warm bed too much. Edited January 19, 20214 yr by common sense
January 19, 20214 yr I'm sure they'll change it if you can't or don't want to go then. I wouldn't go in the night. Like my warm bed too much. And some of us would rather get some protection from the virus as soon as we can. That’s why we’re saying we’ll go in the middle of the night. As much as I love my bed, I’d still go any time. Keep the day slots for people that can’t do that.
January 19, 20214 yr Highest daily death toll yet, 1,610, but infections are down now so the number of deaths should start falling late next week.
January 19, 20214 yr Author Well cases peaked on 9th... from the previous peak it was about 10 days after this before deaths peaked, which would make it 19th January. I'd agree the tail will be tortuously long though- most epidemiologist predictions expect it to be below ~500/day by mid February. Hopefully today *is* the peak and the number of deaths will begin to fall. It looks likely that it will - and the vaccination rollout appears to be going well so there is cause for some optimism, despite the horrendous figures.

Today's figure will also include some late reporting from the weekend so that adds to hope that today will be the peak.
January 19, 20214 yr The success of the vaccine so far shows that the NHS should ALWAYS be given medical contracts, and not have them bunged out to the private sector, i.e the Tories' chums. Every other covid or brexshit contract - test and trace, ferries, etc - was an unmitigated disaster because they were handed out to incompetent Tory donors. Don't you agree, common sense? I hope Starmer uses this line at PMQs tomorrow when (there's no "if" here) Johnson starts to crow about it.
January 19, 20214 yr Highest daily death toll yet, 1,610, but infections are down now so the number of deaths should start falling late next week. I'm sure we're at 33K infections today which is less than half of what we were at a fortnight ago (69K) so clearly lockdown is working and we're almost at the end. :D (I tried to explain this again on the BBC News comment section but it didn't go down well again  )
January 19, 20214 yr Author @1351255308048470016 Some incredibly good news here from Israel, where the vaccine programme has progressed the fastest so far. Although it is worth noting that the single dose that our Government are racing to get out is actually less effective than first thought - especially at bringing down rates...
January 19, 20214 yr Apparently there's division with the Cabinet as to which groups of workers should get the vaccine first, if any at all. Met. Police commissioner Cressida Dick says the Home Secretary Priti Patel agrees with her that police officers should get it as a priority. Others think teachers, supermarket workers. Don't know who will decide in the end. Boris I suppose. Rumours that no restrictions at all will be lifted before Good Friday. That's a long time. Edited January 19, 20214 yr by common sense
January 20, 20214 yr @1351255308048470016 Some incredibly good news here from Israel, where the vaccine programme has progressed the fastest so far. Although it is worth noting that the single dose that our Government are racing to get out is actually less effective than first thought - especially at bringing down rates... There is no way near enough evidence yet to say the single shot is way less effective. There could be many other explanations too, namely the fact the virus is way more in the community tha during trials and secondly it takes weeks for immunity to build up. All just hyperbole for now, especially as we're going to be in lockdown for some time. I'm actually coming round to the opinion the UK might go Australia/NZ border control too for 2021 depending on how the rest of the world vaccinates. There were some rumblings in the press at the weekend. There has got to be a reason we have only just started bringing in testing, stopped travel corridors etc. - I definitely am starting to wonder that this will be the backup plan.
January 20, 20214 yr Nine Met. police officers have been fined £200 each for having a sit down breakfast in a cafe in SE London with no social distancing. They were filmed by a passer-by after he saw several marked squad cars parked outside. Apparently it's been going on a while. Edited January 20, 20214 yr by common sense

January 20, 20214 yr So, 1,820 deaths announced today. A horrendous figure by any standards and won’t have included surplus weekend data...
