It’s clearly not as ‘absurd’ as you’re making out, if it were then it wouldn’t have ever existed. I do agree that it needs updating to fit the modern world and I’d like to see more genre awards (just more awards in general) but I can’t help but feel you’re only calling it absurd because Sam Smith doesn’t fit the current criteria and is unlikely to be nominated for any of the other awards either.

Agreed, I think we need more awards, not fewer, and opening up to different genres would ensure that all types of music are represented. The BRITs, after all, are about music and not who you are as a person.

It’s just my little two cents, gendered categories have purpose but rather flawed in a way

Nothing wrong with saying what you think!

I think having genre awards instead of just 'male artist' and 'female artist' would certainly make more sense and be a good solution to the issue of how to accommodate non-binary artists.

I don't think non-binary artists need accomodation in this case. The vast majority of artists and people in general have no issues with their gender identity and gender-based awards. If Sam doesn't want to be recognized in 'Best Male Artist" category, that's his choice and I'm sure the Brits can accomodate him by not not nominating him in gendered categories. More room for other artists! I agree that The Brits need genre categories, too.

The moment gendered categories get removed from the awards shows we will see and hear complaints how women don't get nominated or don't win enough. There are already complaints almost every year at the Oscars or Grammys when people of color don't get nominated or they don't win.

When there are only 4 or 5 nominations available in a category, race or gender (in a non-gendered category) of the nominees shouldn't matter. Nominations should be based on the merit of the work, not artists' diversity. If the 5 nominees at the Oscars for Best director all happen to be white, male and over 50 years old in a given year, I won't care as long as the movies they are nominated for are good. With only 5 nominations available there are notable snubs of every gender, race and age every single year. I'm all for a female film director to be nominated, but I want her to be nominated for the quality of her work, not just because she's a woman and released a movie in the past year. One nomination spot in the category shouldn't be reserved for women or people of color just to provide diversity.

And before anyone jumps on me for using male pronouns for Sam, I refuse to use they/them pronouns for a single person. Until English language expets come up with new pronouns for non binary people, I'm going to keep using he/him or she/her.

They/Them CAN be used singular.. merriam-webster made changes!

3a —used with a singular indefinite pronoun antecedent

No one has to go if they don't want to.

Everyone knew where they stood …

— E. L. Doctorow

b —used with a singular antecedent to refer to an unknown or unspecified person

An employee with a grievance can file a complaint if they need to.

The person who answered the phone said they didn't know where she was.

c —used to refer to a single person whose gender is intentionally not revealed

A student was found with a knife and a BB gun in their backpack Monday, district spokeswoman Renee Murphy confirmed. The student, whose name has not been released, will be disciplined according to district policies, Murphy said. They also face charges from outside law enforcement, she said.

— Olivia Krauth

d —used to refer to a single person whose gender identity is nonbinary (see NONBINARY sense c)

I knew certain things about … the person I was interviewing.… They had adopted their gender-neutral name a few years ago, when they began to consciously identify as nonbinary—that is, neither male nor female. They were in their late 20s, working as an event planner, applying to graduate school.

Sorry but if you're going out of your way to refuse to take the tiniest step of using preferred pronouns I can't really take anything else you say seriously.

PRONOUNS ARE NOT OPTIONAL

Any further posts that suggest they are will be deleted, we're not tolerating that on Buzzjack

You could've just sat there and not been ignorant, that way I'm sure less people would've jumped at you.

Sam, Dua, The 1975 & Rina are locks for AOTY IMO, I honestly don’t know who else should take the last slot

I thought I saw somewhere that Rina could only get Rising Star cause she hasn't had a single or an album go top 40 in 2020? Hoping Jessie Ware can be included somewhere because What's Your Pleasure? has been fantastic and a gem in the British music industry of 2020. Fully imagining Dua to win AOTY though.
I probably didn’t read that if so Replace her with Jessie ware, but Dua is gonna sweep everything, I just want Sam to get nominated.. Love Goes deserves it

Jessie Ware I thought would be a dead cert

The Brits have responded to Sam:

“The BRITs are committed to evolving the show and the gendered categories are very much under review. But any changes made to be more inclusive need to be just that – if a change unintentionally leads to less inclusion then it risks being counterproductive to diversity and equality. We need to consult more widely before changes are made to make sure we get it right.”

I mean, this is true. The awards as they currently are reflect 99% of the population. If they remove gender, then this brings the issue of women being unfairly represented that occurs every time any genderless award ceremonies announce nominations.

People are suggesting on Twitter, Brits could blacklist Sam for that tweet which wasn’t disrespectful at the slightest but more disappointment, which is ridiculous considering their was literally trying to keep Sam happy, I hope changes can made for the upcoming ceremony

I really hope Jessie Ware gets nominated and wins. Her album is so great - it would be great to see it get more recognition. Fingers crossed she gets a performance slot!

I'm hoping Miley gets a nom for international female. Not sure if she could win given Ariana/Lady Gaga/Taylor swift will likely be nominated.

The BRITS could solve this problem easily. Gender and sex are different. The male and female awards should be for people of the male and female SEX, not gender.

And I've been told, generally speaking, that male and female are generally the words used to refer to sex in humans and animals, whilst man and woman (or boy and girl) are used to refer to gender in everyday life so it makes even more sense.

I think that's the easy solution. Everybody will be happy and everybody will be included. Even intersex people, because usually they do manifest as one sex rather than the other, even if they have XXY chromosomes or whatnot. If they can compete in the Olympics, which has happened in the past, they can be put in a category in the BRITS in the same way.
