I know I say this every time I do better than expected but I really was not expecting to qualify, let alone get a top ten! Thanks to everyone who threw points our way. Great job hosting Cody and well done Land Of DW.

it must feel odd to have sat on that entry for so long!

Congrats, Frank!! 'Wetlands' was a brilliant entry, very majestic! Are we calling it an instrumental winner then? Nice to see either way! And '4:15' is an outstanding runner up, really impressed with all the 18s!

Overall results were a mixed bag, I'm cheering for Quintessa, Aelandor and Hushkanukia in the top 20 and Wholune just narrowly avoiding the bottom half (echoing all of the love for 'Ghost of Christmas Past', what a song!). Vulkyria, Niceland and Numayania deserved much better :(

despite some spiky + visceral comments along the way, it’s been really enjoyable watching it all unfold. it may be nice for some of you to remember that just because a song may not be your favourite, it isn’t any less worthy of points or doing well.
 Tea! Sorry you had to deal with that Kye. No regrets giving it my 18, definitely one of my fave entries of the year, and seeing Scherzland finally get their first top 3 gave me renewed hope, having never had one either. Congrats!

Last but not least, congrats to Cor Lupus on a fine hosting job :D Hyped for TBO and hopefully not too long of a break before 121 starts!

When I listen to the songs, I like to make a short note about each one. The one for Ghost Of Christmas Past read "Overblown pompous nonsense. I love it!". I have now listened to the whole of the Christmas album (thanks for the info, Iz) and that too is gloriously mad.

Very

Congrats Frank, lovely entry and refreshing to see a winner so different, thanks Cody for the enthusiastic and polished hosting, thanks to our voters and supporters, always appreciated, well done John on sheer consistency of quality, and thanks to everyone really, so many great records. And in the spirit of Xmas, just cos you dont get points from us doesnt mean we don't like it - the last 2 contests in particular have been a devil to sort out who does get points and who just misses out - and as often as not a month or year later some track we underestimated turns out to have been a right old fab grower. Time permitting hoping to list the best 50 or so BJSC entries of the year, based on personal chart "sales", over the Xmas period.... :)

that’s very kind, thank you so much + thanks again for the points!

i wouldn't worry about it all kyle, it's all with a tongue-in-cheek i'm sure! congratulations on your first medal position babe, it doesn't matter that it was not my thing at ALL  it could've easily happened with kah-lo so i can envision this xxx

oh thanks lew - i'm not worried at all, though!

i just wanted to put an awareness out there - perhaps people don't know they're doing it + if they are aware, perhaps think twice about it in the interest of being kind. i often have some back + forth with people in bjsc so i quite enjoy the 'banter' but, even i must admit, it was taking some of the shine off last night. there may also be some others that feel like they can't express how they're feeling about other people's comments + that's why it's worth just reminding people to be cautious that their opinion isn't the only opinion. like bre said earlier, the votes speak louder than anything else - i'm elated with how the song did as i had no expectations as it was always predicted to come between mid-table and the bottom!

I am finally at my desktop, so able to catch up on this thread - congratulations to the people of Land of DW - well done!!! And thank you to Cor Lupus for hosting another great contest.

Also, here in Lookylion, we are very pleased with another top 10 finish! Thank you to all the countries who voted for Gregory Dillon's 'Sad Magic'. Maybe it was risky to send male vocals to this contest, but I guess it paid up!

Looking forward to the next round!

It’s the same people who always do it, Kye. The ones who are overly negative about all the pop songs on Plug or the ones who frequently make digs at how ‘awful’ an entry is because it’s not one of those ~out there~ dreary entries which people wet themselves over.

I think it happens periodically to lots of entries and I don't think it's exclusively against pop entries. I can remember when Hypocrite won there was a vocal group who didn't like it or understand why it had won... but it's not personal, it just means that they didn't like the track I entered. And the likes of Rollo could take it to heart whenever there is a lot of vocal disdain for his longer entries.

There's just a wide variety of tastes in BJSC and none are better as such than others - but I don't think that means that people shouldn't comment on what they do and don't like?

I mean I could only really see Klumzee and Chez say anything vaguely negative in the thread about Scherzland's entry - and even then Chez was just saying he couldn't recall it. It's no different at all to Cameron dismissing "~out there~ dreary entries" in the above post!

Yes, I had a look back at the thread as well and couldn't find much at all. I always laugh off any comments about my long songs. I know they're not going to appeal to everyone.

In fairness to Kye though I think it doesn't help the perception of the comments in this thread that there wasn't really much in the way of people supporting his song, it was pretty much only negative and neutral comments (in stark contrast to the actual votes coming in with near universal love towards the end). I can totally get why that wouldn't be the most fun to read and might take a bit of the moment away.

Of course everyone is free and welcome to post whatever opinions they want in here, just came out a bit unfortunately imbalanced among those who were active here last night!

this is becoming a bigger deal than it should be. i made a comment based on (more than 2) comments during the results that were slightly dampening my experience of the contest - i elaborated more in my response to lewis to reflect my position.

to be clear: i haven't taken it to heart + i certainly didn't say that you shouldn't comment on what you like or don't like. i simply asked for a little bit of kindness when expressing opinions as, if they're negative, they're not always that fun to take x

someone needs to create a spectrum of BJSC countries from pop to "inspired" for the memes and shitposts

I really don't think that it's pop vs 'inspired': 'not pop' is not necessarily inspired + pop can be inspired too.

Now go and listen to Majestica's 'A Christmas Carol' for 2 hours like me, it cures everything.

I can understand it can be a little disheartening seeing people be negative to a song that you really love, I don't go out of my way to do it and I apologise if I gave that impression last night, that said, I don't like how this is always an issue, I've seen equal disdain from both 'pop' and 'inspired' sides and it's just a by-product of discussion and people getting a bit caught up in the competition and is not personal. It's the points you get that speak above plug etc., they are the things that are worth your attention!

Just wanted to say that no offense was meant by my comments! Yes as you can imagine based on what I've said, I'm not particularly a fan of the Scherzland entry and struggled to connect with it like others did, my comments were throwaway and not much thought was put into them so I apologise if they did upset as they were not intended in that way. It was more the fact it was doing so well in comparison to other songs I thought would pick up the points from the pop voters (like Hushkanukia for example). I found it bizarre that a song not on my radar at all managed to get 8 12's in the end which is a fantastic result! It's just surprising that's all!

I also think this imbalance in opinion comes from the fact that the 'plug crowd' who have a more alternative leaning taste, are by far the most active in posting and producing BJSC content. Like every single odds post was made by a regular plug attendee and often the comments in the threads are from the same crowd who are the most active in the forum. It's just tricky as a song that doesn't appeal to that crowd will not get vocal love and often surprises in the actual votes once everyone has had a say. This opinion can come across as much more dominant in that respect.

It's tricky to know where the line gets drawn, cause on one hand we all enter this to get good comments and support for our own entries, but we also should respect the fact that not everyone will agree and some may not like your song, I've had it this contest where people have also reacted negatively to my song also but I've not been upset about it as I knew my song was divisive.

Didn't realise I'd write so much, but then again I have opinions to share on this topic!

Amongst my list of qualifiers is a song that got 8 mehs on plug.dj and one that was described as "air" so I definitely agree with the "importance lies with the actual votes" message. I think we all experience these moments but the opinions on your own songs will always be magnified.
