It's interesting and amazing that 12 months ago there was a marketing push with Last Christmas. I bought a vinyl 7" copy of it in hmv.

This time around, no special campaign or marketing, but it's almost happened by accident, helped by the way the dates have fallen.

This was 'optimum Christmas' week for the chart, running from Christmas Day to NYE.

 

I'm still amazed though, and sad that George isn't around to see it after so long.

Since Christmas songs were still in glad it was someone other than mariah for a change but she gonna go number 1 every year now anyway isnt she ,

Would need a real push and media campaign plus a vinyl and CD single release of thousands maybe. Then would depend on what else is out.

It's 'Everything She Wants' that I feel sorry for. ;-)

 

It was a legitimate double A side with Last Christmas in 1984 (and the 1985 re-release), and one of the rare occasions where both sides of a double A side used to get played on the radio.

 

Let's not forget that it was Band Aid that screwed up Wham! having the 1984 Christmas number one, but George Michael himself had happily contributed his vocals to Band Aid, knowing what would happen.

So he ended up singing on the top 2 at Christmas, but it feels right that this has finally happened today, after such a long time.

'Last Christmas' definitely deserves to be a number one song.

 

I've just remembered as well that George and Andrew ALSO donated their own royalties for Last Christmas to the Band Aid Trust in 1984. The trust still exists, so I wonder if that still happens?

It could be that Andrew Ridgeley still hasn't made a single penny from this song!

Loved the close chart battle, here's to more of those in 2021! AIWFCIY and Last Christmas had been #2 hits for so many years that I'll have a hard time remembering that they're actually #1 singles now :lol:

:clap: to Wham! for actually pulling out the #1. I don't really care about the song (it's easily one of my least favourite of the popular Christmas songs) but a #1 peak is well deserved obviously. The Pogues now have no competition in the lane of 'Christmas songs which surprisingly peaked at #2' *.* (at least off the top of my head x).

 

Kind of gutted that Chris Rea was denied a top 10 peak again because of Little Mix somehow staying on SCR but ah well, hopefully it'll have another chance next year ~

 

Pleased to see Coldplay getting a second extra week in the top 40 after all, and yay for the new peaks for The Ronettes and Dean Martin + José Feliciano finally making the top 40! What a mess that this chart ended up being even more dominated by Christmas songs than last week's though :lol: carnage of re-entries delayed by a week.

 

#1 on both the singles and albums charts coming to drop straight out of the top 100 :cheeseblock:

I don't know that it'd be 'much' lower tbf lol, the charity version didn't make that much impact in its first week let alone the second.
