I’m noticing a lot of DJs/producers etc. being mentioned, and it’s always kind of been that way that their albums are hit and miss. For pop, R&B etc. there’s still a massive demand for albums and for investing in an artist as a whole. Right now it seems to be mostly random artists that get the huge, multi-week #1s then are never heard from again, whereas the major artists don’t do as well on the singles chart anymore but still get good album sales (relative to the market!). I’m not articulating this very well but I hope you know what I mean lol.

Yeah 1000% agreed. For producers it's easier to flit between song to song without needed an invested stream of sales or fans. But for longevity in the market, you definitely do need that sustained success in the album market. So many one-hit wonders that are going to be "the next big thing".. that fade into obscurity because they don't release an album to capitalise on the single success, or just continue to throw out singles without getting any establishment as an artist and so little investment from music consumers.

I have never really understood how Jason Derulo has lasted this long. I can’t think of any time I’ve wanted to get invested in him as an artist.

I feel like that's the point though? He was initially positioned to make-up for the lack of Chris Brown in 2010 and he subsequently became a singles artists.

Apologies if this has been asked already, but is I Hope still top 100?
I am a huge album purist and have for many years almost exclusively listened to albums from start to end and not shuffled songs / listened to playlists. One thing that is keeping that alive for me is the resurgance of vinyls which encourage listening to albums from start to end with no interruptions.

I will always favour albums as an artform over everything else which is why I can't really enjoy Mabel's latest offering because it has completely mocked the album format and has become a bit of a joke with no artistic integrity or vision. That sounds incredibly snobby I am aware, but my listening habits and tastes are my own and I can't see it changing even with the changing format of streaming.

One thing that I do sorely miss is an artist's desire to continue their era of music beyond the first week of the album being released. Post-album singles becoming a vanishing trend is so upsetting :(

I agree! I just don't know if album sales are ever going to be big again (outside of the obvious big hitters like Adele, Ed etc..) and I think you're right about the post-album promotion and streaming support. Even Taylor's new album which was released a month ago hasn't got "great" sales. But is this purely coz of lockdown or would they just not be much higher anyway?

If you look at the biggest streaming albums, their "sales" still look relatively low for the impact they had. The albums chart rn is reminding me a lot of 2003-2006 singles charts. Until they find a way to mend the sales and capitalise properly, sales of albums are still going to look weaker than their cultural relevance would suggest.

(This probably isn't coming off the way I intend aha but hopefully it's making some kinda send lmao!)

As much as I like Levitating, and good for it to get reset, it's not going to improve on its peak and I'd rather have had Prisoner return to the Top 10 this week. As for 'you broke me first', well at least that's my -5 sewn up for next week's reshuffle.

#4-6 are still really close! I think Levitating would have got a new peak of #4 if Justin did not have the surge he's had this week

Yup that's why I'm saying I'd rather have him be #2 over Little Mix in the albums chart, they wouldn't repeak while he would!

Thats whay i want Harry to get the number 2 aswell or 1.

This bit is very true. The artists that have proven to last in the game for a long while are the ones that develop fully-fledged albums rather than releasing singles here and there. Can we think of any artist that has lasted for a while (~a decade?) just on releasing the odd single here and there and not mustering up healthy album sales?

Dependent on your definition of healthy album sales the ones that spring to mind are...

- Martin Garrix

- Pitbull

- Flo Rida

#1 - Taylor Swift - evermore

4,648 Sales (+1,078)

2,934 Streaming (+785)

1,360 Physicals (+242)

354 Downloads (+51)

#2 - Little Mix - Confetti

3,455 Sales (+785)

1,925 Streaming (+458)

1,341 Physicals (+279)

189 Downloads (+48)

#3 - Harry Styles - Fine Line

3,361 Sales (+834)

2,768 Streaming (+679)

354 Physicals (+89)

239 Downloads (+66)

evermore should clear 7k and Confetti and Fine Line could end up around 5.5k... it seems like Fine Line has a good chance of getting to #2!

'evermore' maybe not coming to break Dua's record after all then? (Or at least only breaking it by a very small margin).
I think one of the reasons album sales are in the pits is because it's sooooo rare that an album campaign actually continues past release week these days (possibly because Spotify are so horrible with post album singles). Artists like Dua and Harry have shown that long campaigns can bring in the sales, even if they're nothing like they used to be.

Agree with this. I think album’s are still hugely important, the last few years have been the transition period to streaming and artist’s trying to work out how to release singles in the streaming era. Dua and Harry’s era should be used as a template as their campaigns have been almost flawless with great sales to match. Obviously, only a small percentage of artists will get their streaming support, but all artist’s need to put in the work to have fully realised era’s and not just abandon the campaign the day the album drops.

I hope the vinyl surge continues. I buy all my albums on vinyl and use streaming. I think that is the future, Vinyl for the physical and streaming for digital.

It’s time for the CD to disappear.

Yep and vinyl will always be a niche product for mainly aesthetic purposes, CDs still outsell them by a LOT
do we think Little Mix will be able to keep hold of the Number 1 until tomorrow?

Easily it’s Guaranteed.
