As I become fully immersed into BJSC again I’m starting to think to the future and what could be a potentially good entry to send for a future main contest or spin-off contest, and I was curious to know what the general feedback was on how many potential entries you keep under lock and key for use in a future event! This could also be the case perhaps for other non-BJSC contests like Nuggets, Pop Forum Song Contest and Club Bizarre.

Are you the sort of person who sends something at the last minute in a desperate scramble to find a suitable entry that won’t get vetoed, or do you plan in advance what you intend to submit for any upcoming contests?

Interested to find out! ^_^

Currently I have a potentials playlist with 10 songs on it, but it's quite likely I'll never use any of them, or only one or two. At the moment there are four on there I could realistically see myself choosing from next month, unless something else comes along, and a few golden oldies that I like to keep as reserves for months where I have no other ideas. Two songs on it have been on the playlist for over five years...maybe one day!

I often remove songs from it once I've decided I'm definitely never going to send something, either because I've grown bored of the song, because the artist or song is sent by somebody else or the song becomes popular or less inspired in another way.

Oh absolutely loads. I have a Spotify playlist entitled 'Potenches' with probs about 50 songs or something on it. Not solely for BJSC of course but for any of the site-wide contests should the theme crop up!

More than 80% of these would be no-hopers but sometimes a punt pays off.

I have a hidden playlist on Spotify of 10+ potentials which I keep adding to and usually send something from there. Sometimes I have one earmarked for a contest but by the time the confirmations happen I'm already bored of it and send something else

These days I have absolutely none. I go with whatever I feel like sending at the time the confirmations thread is up.
Similar to others, I have a playlist where I chuck stuff as I find it. It's around 10 songs right now, but ended up with about 30 at the end of 2020 so I went through and deleted anything I was 100% never going to send. My real potential list for any month is usually between 3-5 songs.
I always like to have a song ready for the next contest when the current one is in progress. I have my next 3 entries for the main contest all planned but I may still change my mind over any of them. I also have a song ready for the next Unknown Pleasures.
I don’t have a playlist, I pretty universally go with whatever song I’m playing most in the lead up to the contest, perhaps holding a really good one back if I have two of those. I find more of those these days, outside of subculture discoveries, by going on similar artist lists of an artist I’ve enjoyed recently, especially if I want to focus on that sort of sound a couple of contests down the road.
I do have tons of potentials in the archive from over the years that I might revisit if I’m really stuck, Alestorm was one of those, but those are just generically on my big liked songs playlist
loads of oldies of multiple ages and genres. I give preference to something fresh and new to me that I think won't get entered if I don't do it, but failing that I'll flick through the bookmarked youtube videos and see what I'm in the mood for. If I remember something that still sounds thrilling or interesting to me I add it to the list. I always look for something unusual to send and try to make it very different from my last few entries.

I have plenty from 90's to phresh music :kink:

Also I try to send things to other contests within BJ forum but the list have really grown over the years.

For the last few months or so my potentials list has usually just been 2 songs, both of which probably have about zero chance of qualifying and both of which I'll probably never get around to sending but I still keep them around in case I feel like throwing them out one of these days  have generally been recently sending songs that I discovered at most a week or two before the contest started (and in a few cases - including this month - songs that I didn't discover until partway through the confirmation period).

I did used to keep a longer potentials list but at the moment I don't really spend a lot of time looking for a surplus of potentials, I'll occasionally stumble across a song that might be appropriate for BJSC and bookmark it but otherwise if I have nothing to send I'll typically just start a search until I find one song I'm happy enough with and send that. x

I have a playlist that includes potentials. Usually I have to listen over and over again rigorously to figure out which song stands the best chance in BJSC. Obviously it hasn't worked very well but I'm always anticipating the next edition and figuring out what fits the taste of the contest best!
I have a running unofficial background list in my head of potentials and that fluctuates but usually there’s double digits worth of stuff that I’ve considered sending. I tend to semi-plan my entries a couple of months in advance. Like when I won with Alvaro my plan had always been to send Wunderwelt as the follow up because I thought Sofia was a top 5 track and Wunderwelt just screamed winner to me but I wanted to build up to it. Plan somewhat unfolded in reverse but it’s still the most successful bit of planning I’ve done for BJSC, especially as it was planned months in advance when I was setting in stone my plan to built towards the 100th Contest

I've morphed from crazily organised BJSC contestant with a playlist of potentials to "found a song the week before" over the years

I think it's because I kept getting bored of songs pre-contest too much so I want to hold on to that fresh, exciting feeling by the time I send something.

I have a Youtube playlist with 'potentials' on it, but all that keeps track of are songs which I wouldn't add to any of my other playlists (generally because they're older songs) in case I forget them. If there isn't a song I know I've added to it that I think will do well then I barely ever resort to looking at it.

Just looking at it now there are 39 songs, most of which I can't recall what they sound like. Although interestingly enough one of the songs on there is this:

Which Bré sent to the most recent Club Bizarre and I subsequently gave top points to. I thought the artist sounded familiar but had no recollection of bookmarking the same remix of the same song as a contender! :o

I enter several online song contests each month, mostly on the PopJustice forum, and on a Eurovision forum, so I have several shortlists.....

I wonder if we may have stumbled across it in the same way - I just felt like trying to find something African for that contest so was just looking up random remixes of African artists which sounds like the kind of thing you might do as well  (that's an interesting coincidence though!)
