Those last three penalty takers were really the wrong choice given experience, but I feel so bad for them and really hope they don't suffer racist abuse. Rashford in particular is such a model human being so does not deserve it at all.

I don’t watch Arsenal of I can help it so I can’t speak for Saka but Rashy and Sancho are generally players who you’d want to take a pen. Rashy has actually been on wicked penalty form for United (Europa league final aside). His first ever penalty was the last kick of the game in a Champions League knock out away from home that sent out Paris and sent his side through. He’s exactly who I’d want to take a penalty

Fair play to Maguire (2nd) for sinking it, but Maguire doesn’t take pens. He’s a defender. He was the odd/wrong choice on paper

Yeh my eyes widened when Maguire stepped up and Rashford is usually up and down with pens - I’ve seen him miss a few for United but he’s a striker and should score.

Well Italy were the better team there, however the England team and Gareth Southgate have a lot to be proud of, can hold their heads up high, and take away a lot of positives from what they've achieved in this tournament and can take going forward to Qatar 2022. It was a very cruel way to lose however, really do feel for those last 3 penalty takers.

Probably quite appropriate that it was pissing it down through much of the match.

Anyways...well done Italy- deserved.

Can we all agree on being glad it's over!

Oh god definitely. I'm dreading the world cup next year I can't take the pressure I've never felt so sick as in the last few games.

I’m gutted it’s been an amazing month of football and tournament!

Rashford should be scoring that, if you do that shuffle technique and send the keeper the wrong way you've got to be scoring. Totally agree the fault lies with Southgate for bringing Rashford and Sancho in to penalties cold, I'm sure he will hold his hand up on that one and learn from the experience.

My Twitter Timeline is filled with Three things right now. Celebrating/Mourning the result, sharing domestic abuse hotlines and emergency services tricks to get the cops to respond when you call 999 without having to speak, and finally overwhelming concern for the safety and well being of Rashy, Sancho and Saka - as well as any Black spectators. How have we got to this place that people are more worried about how people will react to the loss than the loss itself

Typically, in pure slab head fashion he broke the f***ing camera 🤣🤣🤣

Yeh was hilarious when the camera went dead 😂

Yeh Southgate apologised in the press conference there

The most bizarre thing for me is Grealish and Sterling not taking a penalty over Saka. Way too much pressure to put on a young kid!!

Italy were the better side, they were all over England in the second half. But at least it hopefully gives the time plenty to learn / build upon for the World Cup.

As soon as Rashford and Sancho missed in quick succession, my heart sank for the reaction more than anything. Says a lot about the state of this country, the media and so-called "fans".

I was more referring to this match and for two of them, that being the first time they'd come on (though Saka's age did come to mind too, bless him!). Not that I'm that knowledgeable anyway, but I'd have thought Sterling would've taken one!

I feel bad for Rashford, Sancho and Saka. Especially Rashford as he hasn't been on the field much in the tournament.

Rashford with the shuffling was just trying to do what one of the Italian players did, who shuffled and then managed to score.

If England had won would you still be glad that it's over? genuine question by the way.

In that context I would agree. Bringing on cold for pens is never a good idea. Louis Van Gaal did it for keepers and it worked wonders and I’d say Southgate was probably a little inspired.

Sterling should have. Pretty boy too. Both of them defo should have taken one over Maguire

Yes. Some of the xenophobia that's been thrown around in the last few days on both sides as turned my stomach. I'm glad that's over.

I also think some England fans would have been insufferable had they won.

No, I have enjoyed the tournament, at least the World Cup is next year though!

Sterling should have been nowhere near a penalty.. he’s dreadful at them :D It’s penalties, it happens. They were all pretty poor penalties, but it happens and someone’s got to miss, it is what it is. Not sure Saka should have been taking the 5th penalty, but Southgate said he picked the pen takers so who knows.
Yeh sterling’s not great at getting a clean shot away for me better at finishing in a flowing move.
Absolute scenes right now in Italy as you can imagine! If England had won I would have been in shock, it's a matter of time until England win a major trophy but it would have felt like it came from out of nowhere if it had happened this year. Just England leading at half time and the prospect of the wait for a trophy coming to an end was shocking enough.
