This question has come to mind after all of the events of Euro 2020 and the response to England getting to their first major final in 55 years. It's also seeing the effect of tournaments on those who can't stand football at all that has made me wonder about this. From next month "normal" football will be back and it's this kind of football that is at the heart of the World's love affair with the sport but this also tends to be when the casual audience falls out of interest for a couple of years at least.

 

 

Both versions of football have their successes and their failures but the chance to improve on/maintain those triumphs or bounce back from setbacks are fewer and further in between when it comes to International football but at the same time International football can grip the World like nothing else.

For me, it’s always club football before international football. Of course I will support my country through international breaks and tournaments but it’s always club football first. I support 2 teams, I support my local Scottish team from the city I live in then I have an English team I support as well.

I voted for international football, just love it! It so much more unique and only comes around now and again and so feels like history is being made whereas club football is class but it’s too frequent in terms of champions league games etc!

 

 

Club is about greed from team owners and players on auction for millions of pounds/dollars/etc. while international is about pride, national unity, and togetherness. I will always prefer the latter.

Tournament football is great, I love the World Cups and Euros. I just like the buzz in the country and the atmosphere, but the friendlies and qualifiers are an absolute chore to get there and boring as anything.

Has to be international football for me. Mainly because as a country you can't just buy better players to do better, plus the tournaments are all done and dusted within a month and you know all the results instead of waiting for a whole year just to get a list of teams! And of course a win can mean so much more as well.

Not at all, I understand international football and the smaller FAs need the games for money etc. - I just have little interest in the games. International breaks in September, October and November ruin the flow of the season for me. I love tournament football (e.g. I am looking forward to new FIFA Club Cup- which will be a little like the Euros) but club football is so much more enjoyable.

I think this is key when it comes to club football, you can't watch an entire season's worth of matches if you don't support any team(s). I think this is why there is so much emotion with club football, you see the highs and lows of the team you support over the course of a year and it is a feeling that is even bigger for people who travel all around a country or a continent to see their team play. There are also the stories of people who attended matches with their grandparents, parents etc.. from when they were toddlers and then they carry on that tradition with their own children, grandchildren. With tournament football it's more about being entertained as a neutral but with club football first and foremost you just want your team to win and your rivals to lose.

Exactly my stance. The international tournaments I get more into but as an overall entity I never look forward to the int breaks during the regular season. So club football gets my vote as that's always interesting.

Back in the day were Carlisle not in the first division - like the 60s?

We were First Division back in the 1974-1975 season. I remember my dad telling me as it was before my time. My dad gave my brother and I a love for Carlisle United.

 

Just looked it up, we were actually top of the table after the first three matches. Got relegated in the end. :(

I definitely feel more invested in international tournaments! I love the grand scale of it all and how it really unifies a lot of the country for that month or so. I support QPR on a club level but not quite to the extent of my dad and brother, who probably would answer 'club football' to this question!

So a one off then, fair play to them!

As a season ticket holder of a club and a supporters club member of a country, I'd plump for country of the two but I essentially ignore vast swathes of both, if it's no on my TV at an acceptable time I have no interest in following it. For domestic football my interest has definitely waned over the years, the Premier League forever becomes less interesting, very few of the big clubs in Europe that are successful are remotely likeable and so much is about money. A good team from outside the usual suspects internationally will usually have a few tournaments to try and win (Chile, Belgium), a good team domestically will just get ripped apart straight away.

 

It's partly down to not playing the likes of Fifa and FM much any more too, but back in 2010 I'd know most of the World Cup squads for the bigger nations, this Euro's Italy and Spain both started the tournament with 4-5 players I'd literally never heard of.
