At the #3 spot is Knowing Me, Knowing You, released in February 1977 as the 3rd single from ABBA's 4th studio album Arrival. The song was written by Benny , Bjorn & Stig Anderson with Frida singing the lead vocals. During recording sessions, it had the working titles of 'Ring It In' & 'Number 1, Number 1' & was one of the early ABBA songs to deal with the break-up of a relationship. It predates the divorces of the ABBA members as well as further break-up songs to come. Group member Benny named this track as one of ABBA's best recordings in a 2004 interview, along with 'Dancing Queen', 'The Winner Takes It All' & 'When I Kissed The Teacher'. This song was also seen as a turning point for the group as they were beginning to leave behind the bubblegum sound & start touching on serious issues such as in this case divorce.

Upon release the song proved to be one of ABBA's most successful singles by topping the charts in Belgium, Ireland, South Africa, Germany & UK, and reaching top 5 peaks in Austria, Netherlands, Switzerland & Canada. It also hit the top 10 in Australia, France, New Zealand & Norway. In the USA it became the group's 6th top 20 hit by reaching a #14 peak. To date this is the group's 3rd biggest selling song in the UK with over 973,000 copies sold & was the 6th biggest seller of that year.

For most of the rate this was actually in the runner-up spot, but got overtaken at the very last minute & had to settle for a the 3rd spot, which is still a great position with many, many high scores & nothing lower than a 7, quite a feat. This is perhaps one of ABBA's best known songs that combines an aggresive and downbeat approach. The stellar guitar parts of this song actually highlight the melancholy of the melody and the lyrics. Beautifully produced with stunning arrangements that gives this track an epic feel & of course there's that fantastic chorus that's not only one of the their very best, but possibly one of the greatest pop chorus's ever written. This is ABBA at their absolute prime of their careers & start to reach their true potential with this masterpeice recording.

The Winner Takes It All VS Lay All Your Love On Me

Who will win, stay tuned to find out.....

Knowing Me Knowing You is utterly fantastic. As Nina says I think it marks the point when ABBA became real heavyweights and it’s the ultimate break-up song. I could easily have given it an 11 but I decided to give my 11s to two underrated gems instead.

The Winner Takes It All to win please!

Gimme Gimme Gimme - I’m amazed it’s that high but a great pop song (and soundtrack to such an iconic British sitcom)

Knowing Me Knowing You - excellent example of a strong pop song

The Winner Takes It All for the 🏆

OMG catching up and my top 5 ABBA songs are the top 5 *.* although my exact order is:

Lay All Your Love On Me > The Winner Takes It All > One Of Us > Gimme Gimme Gimme > Knowing Me Knowing You

Really surprised that 'One Of Us' did so well  either of the remaining two songs will be an excellent winner.

2. Lay All Your Love On Me | 9.194

Highest Scores: 11: (dandy, PaulM1983, Tawdry Hepburn, Aaron, n4yr, Jade, Liam, Ho-Lee Smokes, HausofGucci), 10: (Qween, spiceboy, Jester, gooddelta, Iz 💀, Simon, Chapman, Feel The Fever, cider man, Lukuzz, Viper), Lowest Scores: 2: (Last Dreamer)

We are now almost at the end of these results & in the runner-up spot is Lay All Your Love On Me, released in July 1981 as the 6th & final single from ABBA's 7th studio album Super Trouper. The track was penned by Benny & Bjorn with Agentha singing lead vocals. Recording began at Polar Music Studios in Stockholm on September 1980, with the final mix of the song being completed on October 1980. The song was not originally intended to be released as a single, but was issued in 12-inch form in the UK and a few other countries in 1981. The group did not film a music video for the track, so Epic hastily assembled a video (at a cost of £3,500) by using excerpts of some of their other music videos. In 2006 Slant magazine placed it at No.60 on their list of the greatest dance songs of all-time, & at 66 on the updated 2020 list.

Upon release it peaked at #7 on the UK charts where it became the group's lowest charting single since 1975, but became was the highest charting & biggest selling 12-inch record at the time. Elsewhere it reached the top 10 in Ireland, top 20 in Belgium & top 40 in Germany. In the USA the song topped the US Dance charts thanks to a remixed version by Raul A.Rodrigez, which in turn would lead to the decision to release it in a limited 12-inch form in other countries.

Wow didn't expect this to be so popular on here, I knew it was loved but for it to beat so many other far bigger hits is quite an achievement. This performed consistantly well throughout the rate by never leaving the top 3 & was even #1 for a brief time before the next entry took over. Obviously if this got released in the traditional format then it could have easily been another top 5 hit for the group. This dark disco ABBA song is just fantastic with unforgettable synthesizer riffs, pounding electronic beats & cool descending vocals which gives this a rather sinister yet cool vibe & those crashes at the end of each chorus is pure magic. A fantastic addition to ABBA's stellar discography & a more than worthy fan favourite. An all-round amazing runner-up choice on this rate.

I have Steps to thank for my love of this song. I heard it first with their cover and then listened to the original

I think my love of Lay All Your Love On Me is vastly enhanced by the great Erasure cover and the version in the Mamma Mia Film.

Wonderful song, and the right top two for me of the realistic contenders. Such a great 80s single from them and deserved far higher than No.7 but obviously the way it was released was unconventional.

Doesn't Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom by Vengaboys rip-off the first verse melody in its own first verse? 'When you're alone and you need a friend' / 'I wasn't jealous before we met' are the same melody.

From my top 100 ABBA songs ranking.
