Jade!!! That might be one of my favourite things you've ever sent. Guess it's a bit more divisive than I thought, but at least it's still top 10! Thank you kindly for the points too x

Also, do I want to look into the lead singer of Falling In Reverse? A few people have mentioned him in their comments...

Probably not, he's a particularly vile piece of work

A marmite entry so far as expected - pretty much all or nothing! Thanks for all the medals  have really enjoyed reading all commentary regarding it, especially happy that it's one of Chez's all-time Nuggets favourites :o

Glad to have pushed Cellar Darling into the top 10 <3 I'm thinking that Rollo is the one behind it but we shall see. Long song supremacy indeed :kink:

I had an inkling that BRUIT ≤ might have been Jade's entry for some reason, was clearly onto something! :cheeseblock: thanks Jade for nearly doubling my points total so far as well :kink:  close to a 12 point swap! (also this song needs to be added to Spotify post-haste xx)

17 DHWE ◼ The Hotelier 'Among the Wildflowers’

Why ‘Among the Wildflowers'?

I know it's a little shouty and I took a risk by sending it, but in the end I decided it was worth it bc I am very very very attached to its parent album, home like noplace is there. I was gonna send the closing track bc it's less shouty but i think that song makes more sense as a cathartic album closer and not a standalone song, and I wanted something that would best represent the album as a whole. so I went for "among the wildflowers", which in the emotional arc of the album I would consider to be the peak (along with the part 2/following track "life in drag"). so, the song is the perfect distillation of the album imo: emotionally intense (emo, as it were), tackles a lot of the themes that crop up on the album (gender identity, mental illness, abuse), and it ends on a touching note, the kid being asked what he would do if his friend were being hurt. childhood innocence to contrast the pain and grief that often marks the loss of that innocence.

just wanna start by saying this was an excellent contest! I think it's my favorite edition of nuggets ive taken part in in fact. I'd never heard of gang of youths before this contest but apparently they have a lot of hype (shows how I've been slowly losing touch the past couple years) and I can see why! I hear a little bit of a lot of great '00s indie in this particular song. the rhythm section reminds me a little bit of the national or the Walkmen, the orchestral parts remind me of arcade fire or stars, the combination of that fast-paced rhythm section and the orchestral bits reminds me of los campesinos!, and the frontman sounds a little bit like Paul buchanan from the blue nile to me. very very good

Well, that was short lived — Gang of Youths return to pole position!

It was very poor judgement on my part for sending Zombified without actually knowing very much about the band/lead singer. I just liked how it sounded but I'll accept my scathing fate for it.

P.s. apologies for not voting

Correctly identified that one as dhwe's entry as well, was a shame to not quite fit that song into my votes as it definitely sounded pretty emotionally ~potent~. It reminded me a little bit of Spanish Love Songs (a band I have repeatedly tried to get into due to some massive online hype but haven't quite clicked with me, I think I liked this song more than anything I've heard from them, nonetheless I imagine you'd probably like them if you don't already know of them). Thanks for another couple of points as well.

18 IZZY 💀 ◼Nocturna 'New Evil’

Why ‘New Evil’?

Nocturna are the new kids on the symphonic metal scene, a scene that gets one or two new bands a year if that, so apparently a fairly big deal in symphonic metal subreddits. Their album is, if nothing too original, a good and lively addition to the scene, and 'New Evil' is I think the best on there for its heavy grindy guitars and heavy energy although there's a couple of other good tracks I could have sent.

01 Gang of Youths 'in the wake of your leave'

I couldn't imagine a more post-rock titled song and artist if I tried, but '7 Billion People Alive All At Once' is a great encapsulation of what I love that genre for and its ability to captivate you in a profound soundscape, as if you are lying back on a hill above a city at night and watching millions of people coming and going. The thudding guitars and textless vocals, and build that makes each part sound completely different and yet all very exciting and vigorous, they all make this one stand out ahead of the other, also excellent, post-rock songs in this contest. Great listen.

Big climbs into the top five for both And So I Watch You from Afar and Cellar Darling here — but Gang of Youths remain untouchable.

RabbitFurCoat was not available to comment... but 'how will i rest in peace if i'm buried by a highway?//' has proven to be a great choice and is sitting pretty in second place. This twelve for '7 Billion People all Alive at Once' sees it surging into third place. The top five is all over the place.

okay but like where have I been? haven’t heard of Baltra before Unknown Pleasures scouting and now all three of the tracks I’ve caught have been amazing *.*

Also it’s good to see something dance/electronica adjacent in Nuggets, comes to show that music blurs the lines of genres a lot

RFC definitely wins best song title! I really liked 'smoke break//' by KennyHoopla, this song wasn't clicking with me quite as much but still nearly made it into my votes.

21 KING ROLLO ◼ Cellar Darling 'DANCE'

Why ‘DANCE’?

Yes, it was me who sent the longest song. I discovered it from the Marillion forum.

12pts - Bruit - The Machine Is Burning (Live)

10 - Master Boot Record - Ftp

8 - Mishkin Fitzgerald - Seraphim

7 - Hangman's Chair - Loner

6 - And So I Watch You From Afar - 7 Billion People All Alive At Once

5 - God Is An Astronaut - Forever Lost

4 - Baltra - Will You Be? (CFCF Remix)

3 - Esti Kornél - Utánad

2 - Nocturna - New Evil

1 - Poets Of The Fall - Locking Up The Sun

There were many good songs but my 12 points go to the final song for its slowly building wall of sound, I particularly liked the use of the church organ.

And just like that — King Rollo and Jade trade twelve points. It seems almost unfair to see BRUIT ≤ at the bottom of the top ten when it has been awarded twelve points four times — currently the most of the contest.

Gang of Youths are still number one but the top is beginning to look quite tight...

I'm not sure that I'd have pinned Cellar Darling as a Rollo entry despite the length  an excellent pick though <3 and that's the second highest points I have received so far hooray, thank you. (Great taste in those votes in general!)

Up to a slightly more respectable position now, hope I can at least hang onto the top 20 here.
