Biography

Lauren Spencer-Smith is an 18-year-old singer-songwriter, who is rising up the Official Singles Chart for the first time with her new single Fingers Crossed. Hailing from Vancouver Island, Canada, she originally came to prominence as a contestant on the 18th season of American Idol, when she was just 16 years old. She auditioned with the songs What About Us by Pink and Always Remember Us This Way by Lady Gaga, and gained three 'yes' votes from judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryant. Lauren ended up reaching the live finals of American Idol as part of the Top 20, but was voted out before reaching the Top 10. Since her elimination from Idol, Lauren has been busy building a musical presence online. She's self-released a few songs since, including cuts like Back To Friends and For Granted, but her biggest success so far has come with Fingers Crossed. - OfficialCharts

Biography

Lizzo is here to let it out. Body positivity, queerness, the embrace of the self in all its possibilities: For her, the freer, the better. Yes, she’s a singer. And a rapper, and—wouldn’t you know it—a pretty impressive flautist. But she’s also an emblem for the idea that social progress starts from within, that her loving herself (and you loving you) is the first step to fighting the forces that keep marginalised people—Black, female, LGBTQ and otherwise—down. “I think that there’s a wave right now in human experience where we want to feel good, and we’re seeking out the practice of self-care and self-love,” she told Apple Music in 2020. “I think my music just happened to ebb and flow with the way we’re evolving as a people and a culture.”

Born Melissa Jefferson in 1988, she grew up between Detroit and Houston, making her way through the Minneapolis indie community in her early twenties. She worked steadily through the 2010s, forging a confident, outsized blend of gospel, R&B, hip-hop and pop before breaking through with 2019’s Cuz I Love You. She could be funny (“I just took a DNA test/Turns out I’m 100% that bitch,” she raps at the beginning of “Truth Hurts”), vulnerable (“Cuz I Love You”), quirky (“Batches & Cookies”) and empowering (“Juice”). In every case, though, her music brings a muchness, a saturated sense of vibrancy and humour and soul and self-assuredness that just kinda makes you feel good. It’s hard to argue it when, upon accepting the 2019 Apple Music Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, she said emphatically, “I deserve it!” - Apple Music

Congrats!

Congrats Joseph! I was worried Buzzjack was gonna crash again and ruin the moment. Here's to your next 100,000 posts

Congrats to Harry as well! As It Was finally started growing on me this week after I found it underwhelming at first.

Ed's 'wait' for a #10 peaking hit to complete the Top 10 clean sweep goes on (and I can't see a remix of 2Step fulfilling that either).

I think this is the second time he has gained and then quickly lost that distinction, as 'What Do I Know?' debuted at #10 before rising to #9 in its second week!

~

WD Joseph on being the 4th inductee to the 100k posts club :jump: (and realistically probably the last, at least for quite a long time). This is clearly more interesting than anything happening in the actual chart this week x Surprised you haven't given yourself the shiny 100 widget yet :magic: Wonder how long it'll be before you overtake me ~

If only today was the 19th of April. You could have done this on the 11th anniversary of you joining Buzzjack!

Thanks everyone! I've added my little 100k posts widget now, thanks for the reminder Bray

Also in exciting news this week, Mariah added to the Big Energy credit :cheeseblock:

Scott Mills will have more chart action tomorrow when he will be playing charts from 1988 and 1996 on Pick of the Pops on Radio 2.

Those charts were presented on Radio 1 back in the day by Bruno Brookes and Mark Goodier.

2002

10- BEAUTIFUL- Matt Darey (16,000)

So damn underrated, what a tune! Really miss vocal trance.

1997

4 BELISSIMA - DJ Quicksilver

I remember this one yoyoing up and down the chart, quite unusual for the most fastest year for chart turnover. Still a bop.
