June 24, 20223 yr I was a little underwhelmed at the beginning of the song and I definitely wasn't a fan of the man shouting but, by the end of the song, that chorus was engrained in my head. It's only grown more since then; really infectious, love the house vibe ('Show Me Love' has definitely been overdone but somehow it doesn't bother me here, I suppose because it only feels like a half-sample) and even the male vocal isn't putting me off now. I wish the gospel choir were in it for longer and grew more prominent though. I get the impression the best is yet to come with the album; if this 90s-house sound is the route Beyonce is going down, then I'm here for it!
June 24, 20223 yr Whilst I have not heard the song, reading the thread I notice how some people refer to Big Freedia as 'the man shouting' when Freedia prefers She /Her pronouns at least so just as a learn not to assume someone's gender identitiy. Reading the comments was uncomfortable so I thought I would say something ❤
June 24, 20223 yr It's lowkey giving microaggression when that's actually an authentic part of the house music Beyonce is trying to emulate here
June 24, 20223 yr I have never heard od Big Freeda and most people here haven't  Seeing ss the default pronouns in English are he and she, and the voice sounds deep, it is hardly "uncomfortable" for us to use him WITHOUT KBOWING THE PERSON!! Jesus Christ, that is NOT a "microaggression".
June 24, 20223 yr It’s okay to make a mistake with someone’s pronouns. Particularly is the case here that Big Freedia is not credited either so without knowing who was behind the vocals you would assume their gender based on gender norms. What you do with it once you know better is more important. Thanks for highlighting this Harry as quite a few may not have known.
June 24, 20223 yr Big Freedia actually does identify as a man btw (she just uses female pronouns). Gender identity aside though some more respect on her name is due than her being repeatedly referred to as just 'hypeman' or 'man shouting', she is very influential in her genre. May have helped if she was credited on the song but hey ~
June 24, 20223 yr Gender identity aside though some more respect on her name is due than her being repeatedly referred to as just 'hypeman' or 'man shouting', she is very influential in her genre. May have helped if she was credited on the song but hey ~ Yeah that's what I mean, for someone who is very influential in their field being used here, it would be see more respect for Big Freeida. For me her part is one of the things that elevates the song and is making it grow, because it feels different from the plethora of house-pop songs we've heard in recent years with that authenticity.
June 24, 20223 yr If someone identifies as a man, for example, but uses female pronouns, not gender neutral, is that a case of a gender queer person?
June 24, 20223 yr I'm sorry for mis-labelling. I have v v v little knowledge who Big Freedia is and that she was even on this track until like the day or so after (and people use generic hype-men - who I thought it was at first - that just shout over the top of tracks all the time) - even then I assumed that Big Freedia sampled 'Show Me Love' and it was her sample of the song that Bey decided to use... I don't think it clicked until v recently that she was actually on the track vocally lol. I've just read up a tad more and (according to Wiki - ever so reliable ik but it's a reference point) she said in 2018 & 2020 interviews. "In 2018 and 2020, Freedia expressed a preference for "fluid" pronouns, and a lack of preference for any one pronoun in particular. Responding to the question, "Do you feel like you’ve been pressured to gender yourself?" Freedia responded, Yeah, definitely. But they can’t put me in a box, child. I don’t let ‘em. I get this question every interview: “What is your preferred pronoun?” and all of that. I’m me. That’s my preferred pronoun. I tell people all the time, it don’t matter if you call me “he,” “she,” “it,” whatever. I know who I am and that’s all that matters." So if it's an honest mistake (like what mine was - I can't speak for anyone else ofc) I think this can be a lesson learnt moment (kinda woulda liked a PM from someone politely telling me and making me aware that it was Big Freedia who uses she/her pronouns - especially after the 2nd time I'd used the "hype-men" term). But now that I DO know/am aware Freedia prefers the she/her pronouns, I will absolutely start using them more and will be making more of a conscious effort to do so. --- Also, those parts are still really irritating for me. Very annoying, sorry. But I'm really liking the song more with each passing listen. It's a bit of an ear worm.
July 4, 20222 yr This is pretty good, it's ~growing I think I will be seriously disappointed tho if the LP doesn't deliver: More bangers served than your high st butchers, leaning on the major touch points of 1990s dance music reclaimed/updated for the 2k22 market, making up a heavy concept album that celebrates the death throes of late stage capitalism/neoliberalism. …with THIS cover art
