I don’t think Hallelujah should be included here, it’s really not that bad

I agree - as X Factor covers go it’s decent.

 

But, surely Steve Brookstein - Against All Odds should be included instead.

The only hate for Hallelujah I have is that someone sings it at the school Christmas concert every year and I won’t hear that it’s a Christmas song.

Nah, Hallelujah should be here, it desecrated a classic song and should never be sung in the way it did.

Re Hallelujah - I personally wouldn’t have included it actually (I’d have sooner put Start Without You on of Alexandra’s) but they’re all group decisions. At least it’s sung well unlike some X Factor #1s. But I think what really offends people is the fact that it’s such a great song that’s being covered and then there’s that heinous key change - something like The Climb which was a mid sized pop hit seems more reasonable territory for covering.

 

Re Against All Odds I didn’t want to have the same song appearing twice and we decided that the M&W version is slightly worse with the over-singing.

'Hallelujah' definitely does need to be included. It'd be very high up my list of worst #1s ever.

 

It may be technically sung "well" but it completely ruins the impact of the song.

exactly, it's a song about being horny and cheating, has to be sung from the guts

not like if you're reading a shopping list

 

that said, Start Without You is even worst, as that's an original.

Start Without You is FAR worse than Hallelujah - so it's not even her worst #1!

Yeah also personally think Start Without You is worse than Hallelujah - Hallelujah’s crime is that is dares to cover Leonard Cohen / Jeff Buckley, but taken in isolation of that is it really Bottom 100 of all time material? I actually think it’s one of the better X Factor winner singles - I’d put Skyscraper or Cannonball in the rate ahead of it certainly.

It'll be eligible for the 2010s round and the rule is that an artist can only have one song featured across the whole competition

Start Without You is so bad! JCB song was my first thought and Swagger Jagger - which is actually later than I thought though!

 

for actual additions, I never liked Room 5 - Make Luv from 2003, Sandi Thom from 06 or most of the charity songs...
