Classic TV series Gladiators is set to return to screens after over a decade off air, and over 20 years since it finished on ITV.

The show, which originally ran on ITV between 1992 and 2000 before a brief revival on Sky in the late 2000s, is set to move to the BBC for a new 11-episode series in 2023.

The format sees a number of guest contestants go head-to-head with Gladiators, in a test of speed and strength.

The revival is set to include "brand-new games alongside classic challenges, culminating at the end of each episode with fan favourite The Eliminator".

Gladiators is back and a whole new generation of viewers can now look forward to watching a Saturday night spectacle like no other," said Kate Phillips, director of unscripted at the BBC.

"Will the contenders have the will and the skill to succeed against our mighty new Gladiators? You'll have to tune in to find out!"

Scot Cru, EVP of global formats and unscripted content, MGM Television added: "Gladiators is a format that resonates with viewers worldwide. We are thrilled to bring this revered series to the BBC and can't wait to introduce our UK Gladiators."

A few years ago, some of the stars of Gladiators talked about the possibility of a revival, with Panther (Helen O'Reilly) telling Good Morning Britain that "there is a demand for it".

"But at 58, I don't know if I'm past it," the star added.

Speaking about the series' enduring popularity, Jet (Diane Youdale) also said: "I think it was one of the firsts of reality TV, where the whole family could watch, and you got behind someone's backstory [and rooted for]our contenders."

What do you make of this iconic Saturday night show returning to our screens?

Honestly excited! Now it just has to not half-ass it like the Sky reboot did.

What it needs is:

A likeable host who doesn't take the piss

Serious athletes

Actually hard challenges

I can see it doing really well if it gets it right. The og show is still something I rewatch.

Ah this news leaked a while ago, apparently they’re returning to arenas to film it! The Sky one was just in a studio, which didn’t have quite the same impact.
This was such an iconic show from my childhood. I hope they get it right as it will be such a hit if they do

I watched this religiously as a kid! Used to collect sticker books and everything.

I'll keep an open mind if it retains any of the original magic, although the Sky reboot from a few years ago failed for a reason.

Would love to see this done well

In its day it was peak Saturday night viewing

Bitch step off ma toes lest I biff you off a tower into water on a cheap Satueday night programme!! Even X Factor is better!

The Australian version was absolutely massive in the 90's, the reboot in 2008 not so much.

I'd be keen to check this out though.

I wonder will they bring John Sachs back to do commentary? If not then maybe Clive Tyldesley or Jonathan Pearce.

Waiting to be biffed off a tower!

Both X Factor and Gladiators were great in their day, in my opinion

Used to be on when I was younger. Not sure if it'll be as good now but nice to see they are willing to give it another go nonetheless.
