It really is difficult to know how to react to this other than with utter disgust. It frustrates me that people are saying that it shows that the Tories don't really understand what it's like for many people in the country... they DO understand, they just DON'T CARE.

First, the lifting of the fracking ban was a huge blow yesterday. Then receiving the drip-feed of 'mini budget' notifications earlier was so bleak... even if not at all surprising that the Tories would prioritise making the rich richer even during a cost of living crisis. This is a disgrace indeed.
It will be interesting how the right wing newspapers will react to this budget - will any think it has gone too far.

There must be quite a bit of opposition to it in the Tory party too.

I imagine that I follow a lot more conservative-leaning and Tory types on Twitter than the average Buzzjacker, and anecdotally I'm yet to find one that has praised this mini-budget, and quite a few have condemned it, including a fair few I never thought would ever criticize the Tories. The last few years should have killed off the argument for Cameron-era economics for good, but this acid-riddled parody has very few defenders.

The right wing papers (Sun, Mail, Telegraph, Express, Times) blatantly call the shots with Truss. That's why they all wanted her. Because it fulfills their interests. So they'll be gushing. Would say sadly but it's completely predictable. And the BBC will have to give this financial horsesh1t positive coverage too. They'll be threatened if not.

Not sure the papers call the shots - but will be interesting to see the headlines tomorrow. I think her backers are way more wealthy people.

I just genuinely cannot believe what they have done, it's complete bonkers. I think they are banking on people being too stupid and seeing 'tax cuts' and thinking they are better off. It's a bit like a Ponzi scheme.

The only justifications I have seen have been parroting what passes for coherent argument in today's Tory party, it upsets "the left". That really does seem to be their sole argument. There couldn't be any clearer sign that they have no coherent argument in favour of this madness.

Out of a matter of interest, can you give the names of the Tory types you mean who have condemned the budget please? I follow several Tories on twitter too - friends close, enemies closer and all that!

The main one that stood out was Tim Stanley, the parliamentary sketch and leader writer of the Daily Telegraph, who was pretty scathing about it, describing it as a tax-cut for the rich.

Julian Smith, former NI Sec has also slammed it as a tax cut for the rich too. Not sure it will be too popular in the Tory Party, especially those Red Wall MPs who have been thrown under a great big bus.

Thanks - maybe the Telegraph aren't that pro Truss after all. Ha ha just looked up Dan Hodges (utter spineless twonk) and he's negative about it so could be interesting...

uh, what a day so far:

> Kwarteng to ask city financiers not to bet against pound

'please free marketeers don't just do what you want in my free market'

@1575048712921157633

new Tory excuses, a Labour government from the future is what caused this and we must stop them

@1575092698306215936

This surely can't go ahead, so I'm enjoying Truss' government not being able to go an entire month without looking like it's legitimately going to crash and fall apart.

Even the Telegraph today looks like a Labour paper.

She has so spectactularly f**cked up hasn't she and far quicker than would have dared to imagine - however, she is yet to be seen pubically anywhere apart from tweeting congratulations to a Far right Prime minister in Italy. This shows she really doesn't care whatsoever about the people of this country. No reassuring statements (even if bull).

A few Sunak supporting MPs are now coming out publically against her - there are more that supported him rather than her so can make life very uncomfortable for her - basically he can say call the shots or we'll tear this Government down.

This would be hilarious if it wasn't putting business and indiciduals of this country (apart from the currency sharks) under great stress especially as indicated by new homeowners in this thread.

Sunak skipping the conference on Saturday.

Meanwhile the Tories keep ploughing on with "nothing to see here" - don't know how bad things will get until the public fully turns. Can't be too long. Personally I think they are done here for a generation. I do think that majority for Johnson blindsided a lot of the Party.

Absolute spineless behaviour avoiding the national press and going for local radio. She might as well have gone on bloody Blue Peter.

At least the good news is the media don’t seem to be letting her off.

She's getting torn to shreds by some of these local radio hosts, that really was a mistake, this is probably one of the highest profile gigs of each of their careers.

Is she a true believer and is shellshocked by her ideology falling apart in record time or is she just trying to get away with robbing the country? She's certainly not trying to be a PM for the ages because I'm not sure if she'll be in by next week at this rate.

The levels of Schadenfreude would be off the charts if it wasn’t for the fact that for every single atom of her incompetence causing real and severe damage to everyone in the uk. She almost caused the complete collapse of the pension system. The economic vandalism on display here is absolutely criminal and both her and the chancellor should be absolutely hounded out of office as a priority. We need an election and we need an immediate end of Tory rule as much as we need oxygen.

Either that or give scotland a section 30 order so we can stay afloat. English refugees will be welcome, as long as they have never voted Tory x
