I would absolutely LOVE if this made radio and playlists more receptive to “grown” pop stars like Kylie, Madge, Janet, Mariah etc. again. I can dream but not so long ago 50-plus stars like Tina Turner, Cher and Diana Ross were embraced by the industry and were charting alongside the likes of Kylie when she was a 20-something, I don’t know why it regressed so much in the 00s and hasn’t really gotten any better

Love that a 2024 Kylie release has achieved that - in the streaming era I never thought we’d see that in the UK or US.

It was definitely something I'll never forget/never quite believe was actually real!

If Twitter Memes Had Their Say, Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam” Would Be the Song of the Summer

by Kyle Munzenrieder

A certain subset of people will tell you that any Kylie Minogue single is a certified bop. And they’re usually right. Even if sustained success in America has eluded her, the Australian pop princess has an unparalleled pedigree when it comes to churning out ear worms. So hearing, “Wow, this Kylie Minogue song is catchy” might not register as anything out of the ordinary. Yet, at 54 years old, Minogue might have released the catchiest song of both her entire career and the year so far. “Padam Padam,” the lead single off her upcoming sixteenth studio album Tension, is almost menacing in the way it manages to burrow into your brain. “I’ll be in your head all weekend,” Minogue coos in the song’s first verse, and she means it. By the third listen, that song has already moved in, claimed a drawer in your dresser, and left an extra toothbrush in your medicine cabinet.

“Padam Padam” has stayed in the top 5 of iTunes’s global charts since its release, and it’s gearing up to be her highest chart debut in the United Kingdom in nearly a decade. The video, which features Minogue in custom bright red Mugler, is cruising towards two million views within five days of release.

As if sensing the song’s potential, Minogue is actively promoting in America, the land where her last visit to the top 40 occurred two decades ago. Mashed up with her similarly viral seminal hit “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” she performed the track this weekend on the season finale of American Idol.

Yet, perhaps the best evidence of the song’s virality is on Twitter, where the timeline has been saturated over the past few days in near-nonsensical memes hitting home the fact that once you get the phrase “padam, padam” in your head, there’s no way to get it out. Here, the best memes and reactions to Minogue’s latest song.

I think we always hoped Kylie could have another breakthrough hit and it’s just brilliant PP is breaking through the barriers on radio and streaming. When I first heard it I loved it and it absolutely deserves to be a success for her and her team.

What’s also fantastic is it’s given a shot in the arm to much of her streaming and YouTube catalogue…so Disco GLE m, Infinite Disco and SBIT are really going to benefit.

The memes coming out of this are REALLY reminding me of what happened with Run Away With Me by Carly (obviously that didn't turn into a hit but it's the same style of meme with the song being edited into random clips). I think it really shows how much Disco helped put Kylie's name back out there, she's clearly picked up a lot of younger/international fans which is a great start for getting a viral moment!

This would be ideal if it can happen, padam padam will open her music up to people who usually dont play her so fingers crossed it can help at least a few songs pick up on streaming, if padam padam can grow into a big hit albums such as step back in time will hopefully see an increase and help push it closer to going platinum at some point.

Frankly I don’t think this will change anything in the industry. First, the song isn’t that big, at least yet. Secondly, they may just say — look, but we supported Padam because it was a cool song! And they will neglect the fact that there are many other incredible songs, just not made as viral ones.

Final few hours to hit that stream/repeat button for ‘Padam, Padam’ so the sales are included on Fridays chart :yahoo:

Hopefully there will be a download boost tomorrow as fans get behind it for a final push.

How that Ann Marie & Shania song is given big playlists and high up I will never know. Those controlling record companies really want Anne-mMarie to be huge, I just don't know why

Thursday will still be counted, it’ll just be an average of the week.

The actual Thursday data isn’t used at all for the UK charts

Amazon makes it very difficult to download an MP3 nowadays! Why don’t they want my money lol

^^ Amazon tells you initially that you have to pre-order the album to get ‘Padam, Padam’ - it’s only when you ignore that message and scroll down to the song can you actually buy it.

Amazon seem over their MP3 business in general and want to push people to their streaming service instead.

I had it that it "couldn't process my payment" without giving me a reason for quite a while, it was only after some convoluted investigating that it had reverted to an old card of mine despite having been using a new one I had as my default for months.

Mind you, the last time I purchased an MP3 from Amazon I was probably using that card.

It's crazy to see her climbing like that on Spotify without playlist support?

Does anyone know if she has one of those auto-play deals?

It has some playlist support, increasingly so as the week has been going (plus the momentum the song seems to have). Just needs a HH add this week and I can see it becoming Kylie's highest charting song on spotify (ignoring "Santa Baby")!

Happy this has been going seemingly viral on social media. We just need it to cross over to TikTok and I could see the song go top 10 in the charts with a well timed remix/CD release. *_*

I hope the success/momentum in the UK will translate to the song doing well in European countries as well.
