Patiently awaiting something from "Like Drawing Blood" to go viral so the rest of the world can appreciate how good it is (it was very revered/high selling in Aus years before STIUTK came out).

 Very happy that Faded did so well here! One of my favourites of the decade too, I haven't been a fan of Alan's recent material but Faded is amazing, definitely his best production and the dreamy vocals work really well with it. I wouldn't say it was generic, I thought it really stood out from other popular dance music at the time especially! Very pleased that it's ended up as the highest dance track in ROTD this year!

Was hoping Somebody That I Used To Know could reach a new peak on its final year but glad it's still managed a top five finish! Surprised how all of the top four is from the last few years, hoping that The Weeknd wins with one of his two.

Gotye's true magnum opus:

STIUTK is a modern classic and delightfully odd hit, hopefully the guy will decide to drop some new music within the next century :teresa:

Nice for Don't You Worry Child, as far as progressive house hits go I feel like Clarity deserves a similar result next year (I know that's a longshot but yeah)

I would be here for this! Would be an achievement for it to even get back into the final though.

Facts, I even have this receipt from my teens that my reverence goes back that far  Never did go to Reading sadly.

I never particularly liked the Gotye/Kimbra song but it was definitely a standout hit as soon as released.

I am loving the writeups, really feels like an exciting countdown like the charts used to!

Great to see Faded and Don't You Worry Child do so much better this year, both are fantastic dance tracks and the latter going out on a high is great to see. I can appreciate Gotye as a very unique and standout hit, but it's never been huge favourite.

I approve of all of that top 4, we're clearly into the 80s-esque sound x

I of course adore the haunting 'Somebody That I Used To Know' - it was my +30 pointer in the 2010s #1s rate after all. still can't believe how much that took off and even nowadays it has over 1 billion streams on Spotify. Shame it couldn't quite achieve a new peak in its final year but top 5 is still great.

:ne: 4 ** 532 Weeknd - Save Your Tears (Original / Ariana Grande Remix)

04-

1st, 2021

So the highest new entry this year is ‘Save Your Tears’ which manages to debut at 4. The Weeknd has had an amazing year on ROTD and finishes it off with 2 songs making it into the top 4 with last years winner ‘Blinding Lights’ still to come. Lifted from The Weeknd’s ‘After Hours album as the last single, ‘Save Your Tears’ is an instant bop, for me the Ariana version is pretty pointless as the original slays – but I guess helped to propel it further up the charts. Probably one of my favourite songs to be released over the last few years which fantastic vocals and very catchy chorus, so its good to see it manage such a good debut. It claimed first place in the 2021 heat and finishes by quite some distance as the top placed 2021 song in the final. Voting wise ‘Save Your Tears’ managed 19 votes which is the second lowest of those in the top 10, the three songs above it all received 24 votes or more. Whilst it didn’t receive a huge amount of votes in comparison to some of the other songs, it finishes just 21pts away from the song in 3rd place.

So with ‘Save Your Tears’ out it means just 3 songs are left, all from 2020; ‘Blinding Lights’, ‘Midnight Sky’ or ‘Physical’ .... but which one will reign supreme.

Not surprising that Save Your Tears managed to top out the 2021 hits, though I wasn't expecting it would go straight in the top 5. The recency bias is particularly strong again this year with the three 2020 songs taking up the top three (which would have been the case last year too if not for Lana Del Rey's 2011 hit).

I prefer 'Save Your Tears' over 'Blinding Lights' personally - which I find decent but highly overrated.

Rooting for an unlikely 'Midnight Sky' win but think it'll be 'Blinding Lights'.

so many major classics in the top end of this rundown, or "million-sellers" in my still-unfinsihed/not restarted top 940 countdown, but I get puzzled by the concept of "hasnt aged well". If it's popular clearly it has aged well! Pop music is ever-changing in sound and what's currently popular, so in respect of it might not sound like a 2022 pop record I can see that's a thing, but not necessarily a bad thing - cos records that sound of "of their time", can inspire the next big sound, or if they sound like nothing else of any time (see Kate Bush) they don't age because they never sounded of a particular sound.

Which is a long-winded way of saying I still love fun., Gotye, Swedish House Mafia, Of Monsters & Men and others about to leave the rundown in the next year or two, cos a classic record is timeless. You can get fed up of hearing some of them, I grant (see Bo Rap for ultimate example)

Completely agree PCF - I don’t really get “hasn’t aged well” either. I just like what I like.

Absolutely love Save Your Tears (or Save Your Love as we’re now calling it :D ) - utterly enchanting and beautiful. Blinding Lights is brilliant but doesn’t have the same magic or endless replay-ability for me.

I'm also not massive on 'Somebody That I Used To Know' (was high up in my EOY that year tho) but it was a very unique and standout song.

'Faded' is beautiful and the intro with the piano gives me the feels.

I'm not bothered what wins of the remaining as they're all fab.

Save Your Tears is a modern synth-drenched classic. I can see all of the top 4 continuing to be highly rated through this decade.

Hoping for a Physical win but would be happy for Blinding Lights to defend its crown - I don't rate Midnight Sky quite as much as Buzzjack as a whole seems to, but that's true of many songs so it's in good company.

When I say something hasn't aged well I usually just mean nothing more than it's a song that I liked when it came out but don't care for as much now, it remaining more popular with other people has no bearing on that (although there are some cases of songs that 'don't age well' for more objective reasons e.g. outdated pop culture references and whatnot, which doesn't necessarily mean I like them any less).

'Save Your Tears' really did give me near enough instant classic vibes when I first listened to 'After Hours' so it was great to watch the public eventually discovering it and making it the huge hit it deserved to be even if it was a while after my peak love for it had already passed. Great that it's done so well here.

Hoping for 'Physical' to win now, that's actually the only one of the top 3 I voted for, 'Blinding Lights' was pretty close though (but it already had its win last year so I'm here for the love being shared rather than just the start of a 10 year reign for that song xx).

Fantastic debut for 'Save Your Tears'! What a synthtastic top 4, the commercial 80s-style revival around the time of lockdown was heavenly for my taste.

 3 4 553 Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky

04-03-

2nd, 2020

Miley Cyrus had the third-highest new entry of last year when 'Midnight Sky' entered at #4. With Lana 'Video Games' exiting, it now seizes the opportunity to climb into 3rd place. However, it was very close to ending up in 2nd. The song also sees an increase in points (+56 on last year), and on voters (+3 to 25). Once again, it was the song that had the widest appeal on the forum, receiving points from more voters than any other in the final. The song itself was an instant hit with Buzzjack including with those of us (such as myself) who aren't usually fans of her. With more than a hint of inspiration from Stevie Nicks and 80s synthpop it became Miley's biggest solo hit in the UK since her two #1 hits in 2013. As with the top 2 this certainly looks to stay in the top region for the foreseeable future if not the entire next decade, but we can now confirm that 'Blinding Lights' and 'Physical' once again make up the top 2.

'Midnight Sky' will go down as a pop classic I feel

A shame the equally (imo) stellar 'Slide Away' never got the same recognition. I can't wait to see what she comes out with next!
