December 11, 20222 yr If this is true then I think this is a bad choice, the song actually had a point to it so to parody it feels awkward at best and distasteful at worst.
December 11, 20222 yr I guess the trouble is that only 0.1-0.2% of the population need to buy it for it to be Christmas #1, whatever everyone else thinks of it. The other thing is that the closest competition seems to be ancient songs so the market’s somewhat dead anyway and it’s quite hard to get that worked up about what LadBaby’s blocking. That said it would be quite cool for Wham! or Mariah to get the official Christmas #1.
December 11, 20222 yr I kind of hope this is the year that people get tired of it and rebel a little bit I also think it’s a bit in poor taste to do a cover of a song that was made for a poverty stricken part of the world & sung by people who could actually sing I don’t get the poor taste argument? The sales would help impoverished people and we have no idea how the parody would even sound. It’s unlikely to take the mick out of the lyrics of the original song, more likely just sing new ones that fit the tune. And people keep bringing up that they can’t sing. I mean, it hasn’t stopped Anne-Marie or Mimi Webb so I’m not sure why it’s such an issue here. I mean I’d love something else to challenge but what else is there?
December 11, 20222 yr Would this make Do They Know It’s Christmas the first song to reach #1 with 5 different artists?
December 11, 20222 yr I'm pretty sure it would, as I think it's currently tied with 'Unchained Melody' which has been #1 for four different artists. Unless I'm forgetting something?

Not liking someone's voice isn't the same thing as them not being able to sing. I don't personally enjoy Adam Levine's voice but he can definitely sing. LadBaby's vocal talents are much weaker than any artist we've named here, from an objective point of view.

December 11, 20222 yr I guess the trouble is that only 0.1-0.2% of the population need to buy it for it to be Christmas #1, whatever everyone else thinks of it. But that argument doesn't seem to work for other charity singles in the streaming era. In fact it really does defy belief that he'll have managed to do this five times and get to #1. Yeah charity singles can still chart reasonably well on downloads even in that terminal decline market, especially ones with high profile such as being promoted by the BBC but not to the level of being a sure-fire #1 with huge sales. I mean the Live Lounge pandemic track only did 66k and while being majority downloads, would not have got to #1 if it wasn't for some streaming support. Sidemen have a huge following on Youtube and will probably end up mid-table. Plus this is a repetition of the same tired old shit. Generally the public get tired of people pulling the same joke over and over again and novelty acts struggle to maintain success after having a big hit. Even Jive Bunny faced diminishing returns after the third one, even Robson & Jerome knew when to call it a day. Yet people are still so enamoured by "lol change the words to sausage roll funny" after five years to send it to #1? And yeah it doesn't really matter, i've not been walking around my daily life foaming at the mouth about Ladbaby since reading this, but this is a chart forum and in chart geek terms this is something people are bound to get wound up about.

Perhaps you just don’t like Ladbaby’s voice?

December 11, 20222 yr To Anne-Marie's credit she can sing pretty well like on 'Rockabye' for example. I don't think she uses it to her best on a lot of her songs in recent memory though. Edited December 11, 20222 yr by Roba!
December 11, 20222 yr Is Anne Mari's stage name Bebi Rexa? She's quite good - listen to her on Louis Tomlinson's duet.
December 11, 20222 yr YNWA has only 4 #1 to its name though? Gerry & the Pacemakers, The Crowd, Robson & Jerome and Michael Ball / Tom Moore? So this would be the first five-timer?

December 11, 20222 yr DPmEVqDkpEE aOBezYWSJ9U If I "couldn't sing" like these two then boy, I'd be happy. But sure, they can't sing They both still sound constipated in those videos so yeah, they can’t sing.
December 11, 20222 yr 'Can't sing' is a bit of a silly criticism, but it underlines what he is, which is an 'influencer', a social media personality. Not a musical artist whose job is to sing songs and perform. The chart does occasionally let through people who don't work as music artists, and generally such invasions are terrible.

He isn't a 'singer' unlike the others your criticising who have a professional career as being 'singers'. he is a media influencer so of course singing isn't his strong point
December 11, 20222 yr Mimi Webb's vocal style grates on me intensely but it's still a style of singing she's not just speaking into an autotune machine lol.
