December 26, 20222 yr I'm sure it was only in the early 2000s that radio stations in the UK at least started playing consistent Christmas music on December 1st. Yes and I remember pre that time that Christmas music would be regularly played on radio between Christmas and New Year, ie the holidays aren't over. There seemed to be more of a 12 days of Christmas thing with post Christmas get togethers having very Christmassy themes rather than just beforehand. Of course on the 30th December many of us will be listening to wall to wall Christmas songs (mainly) between 4-5.45pm though!
December 26, 20222 yr Of course on the 30th December many of us will be listening to wall to wall Christmas songs (mainly) between 4-5.45pm though! I was hoping it was going to be a short cut down chart show with just the non-Christmas songs played (Raye, SZA, Central Cee etc) and the #1 which will probably be 'Last Christmas'. December 26, 20222 yr It looks like as the holiday becomes more and more commercialised and capitalist, the more people end it on the 26th and start early, in November, rather than starting later and ending later, following the religious 12 days of Christmas.
December 26, 20222 yr Christmas doesn’t end until 6th January sorry. This is controversial, but it’s a bit common to take all your decorations down on Boxing Day IMO.
December 26, 20222 yr I find it sad hearing any Christmas songs after the 26th, hearing them is a reminder that Christmas is all but over for another year. Which is why I won't be listening to the UK official chart on Radio 1 on the 30th - I do wonder though how many Christmas songs they will play on that chart? We wonder this every year and they always end up playing lots of Christmas songs. They don't really have a choice, there are so few non-festive songs in the top 40 in that specific week! Radio 1 will know this by now and if they hated it that much, they wouldn't broadcast the chart on that specific week.
December 26, 20222 yr I definitely used to feel that “Christmas is over” feeling a lot more on Boxing Day when I was a kid, once you’d opened all your presents, that was it really. But now I’m older I love the time between Christmas and New Year - I keep watching Christmas movies and have the decorations up and still feel a bit Christmassy, more than I ever do in the lead-up to it. Although saying that I never really listen to Christmas music of my own accord anyway lol
December 26, 20222 yr Yeah it's fair enough to keep it going during Twixmas. It's definitely over on the 1st January though, decs come down and that's it for another year for me.

Technically Snake you can listen to the top 40 countdowns on mtv right up until 5/1/23 which will show that weeks Xmas chart full of Xmas hits if you want lol. Back in the day also some songs would stay in the chart until mid January and they would obv play them!
December 26, 20222 yr I was having this exact argument in the car with my daughter earlier. She's 12 and she loves everything about Christmas, including hearing Christmas songs on the radio (Mariah is her fave, natch), whereas I'm a bit more of a Scrooge about listening to Christmas songs after the 25th. I don't get why you would want to listen to them once Christmas is over, but surprisingly both Heart and Capital were still playing them today. Is this normal? I could have sworn that in previous years radio stations stop playing Christmas songs from Boxing day onwards?? Edited December 26, 20222 yr by Mangø

December 26, 20222 yr but yeah i agree with the points of it being a wind down with the christmas songs. ive listened to a few, but its like 90% less to what i'd been playing over the weekend and in the run up! i think a gradual wind down is better than sudden stop though
December 27, 20222 yr For me, I keep going until Jan 6th although admittedly i listen to less, likely due to the excitement of the actual 25th day being over. It's strange to me that people do act like Christmas is suddenly over when the 26th hits!!

December 27, 20222 yr I play them until the 1st, after that I don’t feel Christmassy in the slightest.
December 27, 20222 yr they should do the eoy instead. i liked tuning in to hear the end of year chart, it always felt special Well just as well we have our own then this week so we don't miss out :P I don't know why R1 have stopped doing them tbf. Wouldn't hurt them really.

Out of the very very few non Christmas songs likely to be in the top 40 this week, there is a question about whether the SZA song 'Kill Bill' will ever be played on the chart show as it was skipped two successive weeks despite being the highest of the new SZA tracks and Jack Saunders obviously loving the artist. This could be to the lyrics about wanting to kill her ex and his lover. Interesting to see if it's still skipped as it's highly likely to make top 5 in next week's chart.

December 27, 20222 yr 27th December last week feel like in limbo land just drag on hate new year day you know hit gloom cold January chart go wired hardly any new music and get blood mr brightside come back 47 week
December 27, 20222 yr Christmas ends on the 6th of January, so why do most people stop listening to Christmas songs after Christmas Day? I've never understood it. :???: We are functionally an atheist country, as are all Western countries. We worship celebrities and corporations and money in this country so Christmas is about shopping and advertising and buying things. There's no esoteric or occult meaning to it anymore. When I was a child they used to have Epiphany on calendars, but it was so meaningless for us, I think we were normally even back at school by then. Honestly No Nut November is actually the closest thing we have to a spiritual/occult ritual that's practiced in Western countries. Christmas today is purely just about shopping and buying presents so it doesn't make sense to carry it on after Christmas day.
