Argh Regulate has gone FAR too early :(

One of the very first times that the UK chart had seen a style of music that was set to become so popular over the following 20 years. I still love it today and think it is one of the very best examples of the genre

Regulate is absolutely immense, definitely one of the defining songs of the genre, easy top placing for me. Think it's done well to be that high here.

'Regulate' is another one that I'd not heard before voting in this - I was sure that would probably be one I'd recognise as I know it's a classic of the genre but it wasn't ringing any bells at all! I did really enjoy it though so yay for knowing it now at least, anything featuring Nate Dogg (RIP) is pretty much always good stuff. A few lyrics in it that feel a little bit corny now but they get a pass for the time. That's definitely one I would have expected to be bottom 10 here tbh so pleasantly surprised it's finished so high (even higher than I ranked it myself)!

Love 'Cry For You' as well  'The Best' is good too but not one I'd ever rush to put on.

It feels completely forgotten these days that the above version was the single version in the UK, it had the Michael McDonald direct sample in the chorus. It sounds odd to me without the chorus in it, albeit I know others only knew the album version and find the chorus odd as a result.

That's definitely the version I'm familiar with *.* but didn't realise it was called the Jamming Mix until it didn't sound quite right on Spotify, so went digging!

Well TIL.

Completely unfamiliar with this version, I was ranking the album version.

20. Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out) 1298pts

Writers - Radiohead

Top scores - dandy* 50, StoneDragon 50, xajnipi 50

Low scores - vibe 1, jszmiles 3, ...ready for it 4, Alex! 4, Nick F1 4

Average score - 26.5

Radiohead won the number 4 poll with No Surprises so it might be a surprise that they can only manage 20th place this year. Street Spirit was the second out of seven top 10 singles for the group.

Well that's my top 2 out one after another then :(

I was absolutely obsessed with that song and its accompanying video when it was released.

Writers - Timothy Mosley, Stephen Garrett

Top scores - AaronTM 49, !!! 47, JackJones 47

Low scores - Cow Cow 2, King Rollo 4, Achabaan 4

Average score - 26.6

Taken from the soundtrack of the 2000 film 'Romeo Must Die' in which she also starred, this was Aaliyah's thirteenth top 40 hit and the first to reach the top 10. In the US, it was the first single to reach number 1 based solely on airplay.

18. Blur - Girls & Boys 1329pts

Top scores - Boymetworld91 50, Jester 50, marcinjaro 50

Low scores - DarrenJames 4, Liamski689 6, ...ready for it 7, Nick F1 7, jszmiles 7

This was the single that established Blur as a chart force after their five previous singles had all peaked between 24 and 32. It's the fourth song to be awarded three 50 point scores, can anything remaining get four?

Three iconic songs out in a row :o

'Street Spirit' is absolutely sublime, one of the best songs ever written.

'Try Again' is obviously an R&B classic and one of Timbaland's finest pieces of work.

And then we have a bonafide 90s indie classic in 'Girls & Boys', great video too.

Regarding 'Regulate' I didn't even know there was a version without the Michael McDonald chorus in it - that's the only version I've ever known!
