27TH SEPTEMBER

The Communards vice like grip on the No 1 spot continues for a third week, sales were off slightly at 107,423 but that brings its title to 433,687, that means it is now in the top 10 YTD, we’ll see where it stands at the three quarters stage of the year next week. The album continues its climb as well 12-9 can it eventually go all the way- steady but surely seems to be the motto here.

They actually maintained their lead at the top, for while Jermaine Stewart remains No 2, his sales drop to just 57,273, a gap of just 595 more this week than last week.

Five Star are back, they’ve got two reasons to be cheerful this week with their second album “Silk & Steel” climbing 5-1 and the third single from it “Rain Or Shine” rocketing 13-4 (53,295) to score their fourth top 10 single on the trot. With the previous two singles peaking at No 7 it means that only “System Addict” has peaked higher than their current hit, and in terms of sales this year they are easily in the top 5 as we speak.

This week also marks the arrival of a new genre of music to the top 10, that of House in the form of Farley “Jackmaster” Funk a Chicago DJ and producer who has taken Issac Hayes’ 1975 album track “I Can’t Turn Around” and written new lyrics and updated it in the house vein to give him a hit. The version which rises 11-10 (23,817) actually owes a great deal of gratitude to a version by fellow DJ Steve “Silk” Hurley who is Farley’s flatmate and had the original idea and the original hit in the US clubs under the moniker SM Silk (that version should see a release next month) though Farley has changed substantively the vocals and the message of the original Hayes version, vocals come courtesy of Daryl Pandy.

Cameo turn that “eye catching” TOTP performance into a 6-3 (53,431) move, and along with Five Star, that means that there’s no room for the Cutting Crew who fall 4-5 (49,555) or for Peter Cetera who dips 3-6 (46,529). Eurythmics climb 10-7 (42,296) and Boris Gardiner declines 5-9 (26,010) as he moves to No 2 on the YTD list- can he topple Cliff Richard in time for our review of the first 9 months next week?

1- DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY- The Communards (107,423)

2- WE DON’T HAVE TO TAKE OUR CLOTHES OFF- Jermaine Stewart (57,273)

5- (I JUST) DIED IN YOUR ARMS- Cutting Crew (49,555)

Everything following ‘Love Can’t Turn Around’ has it to thank for breaking the genre in the Uk, a seminal moment and TOTP performance!

Feel we will hear a lot more of Steve Silk Hurley in the coming months….

too bad Cutting Crew didn't progress further, #4 is not bad, but if we consider it got to #1 in the US...

never heard Love can turn around but sounds great

04TH OCTOBER

The Communards make it a month on top as “Don’t Leave Me This Way” continues to stand astride the top 10, it moved a further 83,878 copies last week so it is on the wane however given that it has now sold 517,565 copies that’s understandable, the album meanwhile continues its rise 9-7. The track is currently the 6th best seller of the year but is now just over 100,000 away from Cliff on the list, the YTD Top 10 is as follows:

1- LIVING DOLL- Cliff Richard & The Young Ones 632,060

2- I WANT TO WAKE UP WITH YOU- Boris Gardiner 626,059

3- CHAIN REACTION- Diana Ross 601,919

4- THE LADY IN RED- Chris De Burgh 584,256

5- WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH GET GOING- Billy Ocean 558,331

6- DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY- The Communards 517,565

7- PAPA DON’T PREACH- Madonna 516,018

8- SO MACHO/ CRUISING- Sinitta 471,818

9- A DIFFERENT CORNER- George Michael 437,529

10- ROCK ME AMADEUS- Falco 436,900

You’ll note no doubt that Boris Gardiner fails to depose Cliff this week but “I Want To Wake Up With You” will certainly gain the title next week unless the Communards can pull it out of the bag.

Madonna is back with a splash as the titular track from her “True Blue” album debuts at No 3 (62,390), that’s the highest debut she’s ever had beating “Into The Groove”’s No 4 debut, and it also beats that song’s 47,940 debut sales, it has therefore to be the favourite to score her third No 1 next week. The album spent its first 6 weeks at No 1 and has never dipped below No 6 in all of its thirteen weeks thus far reviving 6-5 this week and has now sold over 500,000 copies. The song is popularly interpreted to be about husband Sean Penn and comes with a 50s themed video which was also subject to “MTV: Make My Video” competition which sees a second promo shot for it, the song is now Madonna’s 12th top 10 single as she pulls ever closer to the record of 14 currently attained by Madness who release a new single next month in an attempt to pull further ahead.

Paul Simon has been missing from the top 10 for 13 long years (“Take Me To the Mardi Gras”) but he seems to have reasserted his star status with new album “Graceland” which moves to the top of the album charts 3-1 this week and houses the hit “You Can Call Me Al” a song that this week flies 26-9 (31,858). It features a video featuring Hollywood actor Chevy Chase and backing vocals from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, all of which help mark a return to favour after the commercial failure of his last album “Hearts & Bones”.

Five Star are bounded off the top of the albums by Simon and they also score the No 2 on the singles front with “Rain Or Shine” which rises 4-2 (69,462) to become their biggest hit single and could become No 1 next week if Madonna falters, whilst Cameo dip 3-4 (52,292) just ahead of Eurythmics who score a fifth top 5 single jumping 7-5 (43,010). Run DMC Vs Aerosmith hold at No 8 (32,606) and heading out of the top 10 this week are Jermaine Stewart 2-6 (41,412), Cutting Crew 5-7 (37,366) and Peter Cetera 6-10 (27,608).

1- DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY- The Communards (83,878)

2- RAIN OR SHINE- Five Star (69,462)

3- TRUE BLUE- Madonna (62,390)

4- WORD UP- Cameo (52,292)

5- THORN IN MY SIDE- Eurythmics (43,010)

6- WE DON’T HAVE TO TAKE OUR CLOTHES OFF- Jermaine Stewart (41,412)

7- (I JUST) DIED IN YOUR ARMS- Cutting Crew (37,366)

8- WALK THIS WAY- Run DMC Vs Aerosmith (32,606)

True Blue <3 incredible to debut top 3 with a post-album single, the power of '86 Madonna

'True Blue' is a good, if rather cheesy by Madonna's standards, song. 'Word Up' is good fun.

Used to think the chorus of 'You Can Call Me Al' was 'you can call me out'. Its a good iconic 80s track.

The Cutting Crew track is a bit of an 80s epic.

'Love Can't Turn Around' is great and that TOTP performance is certainly iconic and unique! To have two fast dance tracks either end of the top 10 there briefly is great. I do think 'Don't Leave Me This Way' while not being house, does have some house elements to it I think in its middle bit, especially with the piano and wobble bassline.

'Thorn In My Side' by the Eurythmics is good, is quite Bruce Springsteen-esque in style with the saxophone parts.

isn't that the song Madonna hates and never plays live?

Madonna equals a record set by Sandi Shaw almost 20 years ago, that of the female solo act with the most UK No 1 singles which both acts now hold with a tally of three chart toppers each, she also draws level with Debbie Harry as the only lady to pen or co-pen three chart toppers. “True Blue” soars 3-1 on a sale of 102,731 to give Madonna back to back chart toppers and consolidate her place among the biggest acts of the decade, she’s now the 4th biggest selling act in fact on course to sell her 5 millionth single in a chart career dating back under 3 years, she’s still behind Wham! (4.9m), Madness (5.3m) and Shaky (5.8m) in the list. Furthermore she’s the only act to get more than a solitary No 1 single this year (honorary mention to George Michael/ Wham!).

Five Star may rue the day they booked a tour over this period as “Rain Or Shine” is left stranded at No 2 on a sale of 71,009 after they weren't available for TOTP. Both tracks got video promotion on the show but a live performance by the Essex fivesome may very well have made a difference…….

Eastenders is starting to make its presence felt on the charts, firstly Anita Dobson (Angie Watts) scored a No 4 hit with the theme “Anyone Can Fall In Love” and now Nick Berry (Simon Wicks) scores a hit with “Every Loser Wins” which gets a slice of chart history for the highest climber ever on the charts and it rockets 66-4 (51,085) after it was featured extensively on an episode of the last Thursday which saw sales of the track explode as it outsold even Five Star and Madonna on both Friday and Saturday which might suggest that next week Madonna will have a challenge on her hands. It’s another hit for writer Simon May who has also penned “Something Outta Nothing”” for cast members Letitia Dean and Paul Medford (Sharon Watts and Kevin Carpenter) which is released in a fortnight, on screen of course they are members of “the Banned” a current storyline in the soap.

Lock up your daughters A-ha are back with their second album “Scoundrel Days” which hits the shops this week with lead single “I’ve Been Losing You” rising 14-8 (34,527) to preserve their 100% top 10 hit rate. The song enters at No 4 in their native Norway and looks set to become their second chart topper there, it comes however with a rather tame (by their standards) video which may hamper its performance but time will tell.

Talking of chart toppers in Norway here’s “In The Army Now” climbing 29-9 (33,065) for Status Quo. It was originally written and released by Bolland & Bolland (whom you may recall wrote Falco’s “Rock Me Amadeus”) and made No 1 for 6 weeks in Norway back in late 1982, it’s now providing the Quo with their 20th top 10 single. It’s been available on their album of the same title for some weeks now but only blips 20-21 this week with the single seemingly the preferred method for buying the track, incidentally the “Stand Up And Fight” line is shouted by Noddy Holder just in case you wondered.

Pet Shop Boys have plucked a fourth hit from “Please” though it has been substantively remixed for single consumption, a fact which may account for why “Suburbia” has outpeaked their last two releases by jetting 23-10 (28,271) this week. The video is directed by Eric Watson, the main photographer form Smash Hits which is of course how he is known to Tennant.

The Communards drift 1-3 (70,346) with what is now the 5th best- selling single of the year and may cut Boris Gardiner’s reign at the top (he takes over from Cliff Richard as the biggest selling single of the year this week) to just one week depending on how it performs this week, Paul Simon climbs 9-5 (47,923) but keeps his No 1 album spot, whilst Cameo and Eurythmics both fall 4-6 (38,658) and 5-7 (36,074) respectively.

1- TRUE BLUE- Madonna (102,731)

2- RAIN OR SHINE- Five Star (71,009)

3- DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY- The Communards (70,346)

4- EVERY LOSER WINS- Nick Berry (51,085)

5- YOU CAN CALL ME AL- Paul Simon (47,923)

6- WORD UP- Cameo (38,658)

7- THORN IN MY SIDE- Eurythmics (36,074)

8- I’VE BEEN LOSING YOU- A-Ha (34,527)

9- IN THE ARMY NOW- Status Quo (33,065)

10- SUBURBIA- Pet Shop Boys (28,271)

Belated Cutting Crew appreciation

'In The Army Now' is a breath of fresh air compared to the usual Quo formula. 'Suburbia' is great as well <3
