I was surprised Forget You hadn't come up yet but now I know it was because it was a different version of the song.

I chose song 9 as the least answered so I just missed out on the bonus points.

And finally with a meagre 3/20 correct answers:

Number 20: Goldfrapp - Fly Me Away

I heard this in a listen-through of the “Supernature” album earlier this year, from which it was the 4th single, which I guess explains the fairly low chart position for it. I know it’s very far from being one of their best known but it is rather lovely. Also I thought some might recognise the intro as being Goldfrapp-like electronica, but to be fair it is a rather brief intro.

4 points:

Mangø, dandy*, jimwatts

And so the extra points for correctly guessing that this would be the least well answered go to…

Nobody.

4 of you came close by predicting Black Box Recorder would be the least well answered. 4 also went for Juice Wrld, and otherwise there was quite a wide spread of guesses, but all incorrect.

Well considering I was apart of that album listenthrough I have egg on my face for not getting it was Goldfrapp lmao. I did think it was some 80s star releasing a song in the past decade or something but left it as wasn't sure!

And so to the connection - as there were 5 points available I was happy to give partial credit for anything on the right track.

Riser said each song is from a different year, which is true aside from the red herring and the Cher slip up, so I gave 1 point for that.

chrissmith276 and dandy* said that each song peaked at a different position, which is also true and slightly closer so I gave 2 points for that.

paulgilb said that the last digit of the peak position is the same as the last digit of the song’s year, which is better still so 3 points for that.

What I was looking for is that each song’s year is 1980 plus its peak.

Congratulations to the following who earned the full 5 points:

Mangø, Bjork, PeteFromLeeds, jimwatts, Rush

I allocated 3 points for identifying the red herring and another 3 for explaining how it relates back to the theme, but in practice people either got all 6 points or nothing here. And the only 3 entrants who got the 6 points were Mangø, Bjork and jimwatts.

Clip Number 4 - “1980” by Estelle is the red herring as 1980 plus its peak is 10 away from its year.

It relates back to the connection because the song is called “1980”, which was the pivotal year in the connection.

I got the full theme as I was lying in bed on deadline day - I'd realised that the peak always ended in the same digit as the year of release, but the 1980 bit took longer to get to me. If I'd got it a bit earlier I think I'd probably have gotten a few more songs!

Snooker Loopy (#6, 1986) found rotting :kink:

It was quite satisfying to work out the theme, and as mentioned it helped me get several others (including Goldfrapp, I attended the same listenthrough as Roba but wouldn't have remembered the 'Fly Me Away' intro from that alone), using my Top 40 Charts book which clearly marks peaks to look for #26s in 2006, #25s in 2005, etc. Unfortunately it only goes up to 2008 (though I could have skimmed through my Top 75 charts books for the later years if I'd thought of that in time).

'1980' was the last song I got, as I noticed the title '1979' for Smashing Pumpkins was very similar to a key part of the theme, so I checked the Estelle intro, and a few pieces fell into place from there.

And finally the order of the songs. 4 people managed to get the 5 points for this - Mangø, Bjork, dandy* and Rush.

I gave jimwatts 2 points for saying “age of the lead singer when they first charted this century” as it’s very much on the right lines.

In fact the right answer is simpler than that - it’s the date of birth of the lead performer, from most recent to earliest.

I appreciate that in some cases it’s not clear who the lead performer is but I don’t think that made too much difference. I believe the members of Steps and Little Mix are all similar ages and the duo known as Air are born 3 months apart.

Anyway this is what I used:

1 Jarad Higgins 02/12/1998

2 Perrie Edwards 10/07/1993

3 Lena Mayer-Landrut 23/05/1991

4 Estelle Swaray 18/01/1980

5 Alecia Hart 08/09/1979

6 Claire Richards 17/08/1977

7 Chris Martin 02/03/1977

8 Gary Lightbody 15/06/1976

9 Sarah Nixey 21/12/1973

10 Gwyneth Paltrow 27/09/1972

11 Calvin Broadus Jr. 20/10/1971

12 Dolores O'Riordan 06/09/1971

13 Aled Jones 28/12/1970

14 Rivers Cuomo 13/06/1970

15 Nicolas Godin 25/12/1969

16 Dave Grohl 14/01/1969

Ah wouldn't have gotten that! I did wonder whether it was the most recent song to the oldest but knew that didn't quite fit, but it was sort-of similar in the end.

And the scoreboard before I try and get some sleep as it’s 2:30am in Hong Kong!

Argh, so close and yet so far, but I'm delighted to finish second after recognising so few clips on the first couple of listens. Congratulations Mango!

Thank you Julian for a well-constructed quiz, and for completing the hosting over two continents! Enjoy your time away ^_^

Had a go at this post-deadline (sorry that I didn't manage to submit in time </3) and based on 1 listen I would've got Glee Cast but missed some obvious indie hag ones lol 💀

Well done Mango. I should have put more effort into researching the facts about the songs I knew to work out the links between them.

Thanks Julian for putting the quiz together.

Another reminder that this month's quiz, Blankety Blank, is currently ongoing in The Lounge!

I was very lucky with my guess for 1980 as being the red herring then as it wasn’t for the correct reason :o
Well done to the top few in that - it was definitely on the difficult side for my level of knowledge, but a lot of fun, thank you for hosting Julian
