November 30, 20231 yr That is sad, a #1 would be fitting for such a classic song regardless of whether it happens for the Christmas #1 week or otherwise.
November 30, 20231 yr Aaw rip Shane hope it can get a #1 peak it deserves, Shame it’ll be in such sad circumstances though. Of all the classic Christmas songs, though, it deserves it the most imo
November 30, 20231 yr I still think Wham! will probably get the Christmas Number 1, given there's still a few weeks to go I'm guessing the Pogues will have a shot though in the lead up to Christmas though
November 30, 20231 yr I think it depends if anyone can get a proper download campaign for the Pogues going or not
November 30, 20231 yr LadBaby has reversed his promise and announced "Fairytale of Sausage Rolls" as a tribute to Shane. not really
November 30, 20231 yr I can't see Pogues doing it, even now. The song hss fsllen out of style in recent years, and it's just like you would never expect White Cheistmas or Misletoe and Wine to be contenders. I HOPE it gets a week at no.1, oe even better, Xmas no.1, bur I can'ts ee it.
November 30, 20231 yr LadBaby has reversed his promise and announced "Fairytale of Sausage Rolls" as a tribute to Shane. not really !!!!!!! Don't manifest THAT!!
November 30, 20231 yr That just makes me tempted to double down on my Wham! bet :teresa: (Although their odds haven't changed actually)
November 30, 20231 yr Or that so many people are placing bets on The Pogues that they need to cover themselves just in case it does happen. I can't quite see it myself.
November 30, 20231 yr It would probably take around 40,000 downloads, which is definitely doable. However, I've noticed that people's attention spans can be pretty short-lived. They'll get attached to the nostalgia for a few days, and then move on just as fast. This might be an exception, though. Edited November 30, 20231 yr by _Clo_
November 30, 20231 yr Sad to hear about Shane's passing. :( Would be nice to see FONY finally get it's week at ##1.
November 30, 20231 yr Last year in Xmas week FONY at #13 did 31,924 with Wham at #2 on 54k, I imagine it will get a fair amount of extra streams this year after the news regardless of a campaign, so may even need fewer than 20k downloads to take it? Would be great to see the song get #1 given the playlists are so US-centric, it's unlikely it will ever have another chance. (Also anything to stop Mariah or Wham getting it every year for the rest of time) Edited November 30, 20231 yr by Yorkie3
November 30, 20231 yr I do feel if there's a proper effort for FONY and it can get media attention, it's doable. It's not like there's anything else challenging. Mainstream media interest in the charts is so low these days that anything like this that makes headlines can do it. We've seen it with Kate Bush, and it helps that it's an old song and/or by a legacy act as them returning to the charts always gets much more media attention than newer tracks. Would be lovely to see to make up for this sad news, I honestly think it could've done so already if these Spotify playlists weren't so Americanised.
November 30, 20231 yr FONY Christmas #1 would be a brilliant end to the year but it really would need a well organised campaign. Even 20k downloads don’t come easily these days.
November 30, 20231 yr FONY Christmas #1 would be a brilliant end to the year but it really would need a well organised campaign. Even 20k downloads don’t come easily these days. Especially given a mass load of people are currently downloading the song anyway following the news of his death. So would make things difficult to concentrate on the 1 week needed for Christmas Number 1
November 30, 20231 yr Especially given a mass load of people are currently downloading the song anyway following the news of his death. So would make things difficult to concentrate on the 1 week needed for Christmas Number 1 If Shane had died around the 14th it might have had a far better chance.
November 30, 20231 yr I was also taking into account surprise releases. If Sidemen drop a song, Pogues might need far beyond 20,000. Most of the punters betting probably haven't even heard of Sidemen, but they were so close last year, they might give it another go. Then there are the rock fans who want AC/DC to take it, and don't forget the Krackpots, they're releasing a single and it might have 15 versions. I’m not sure whether it will just be FONY vs Last Christmas. Edited November 30, 20231 yr by _Clo_
