It's 20 years since 'Red Blooded Woman' was released as the second single from 'Body Language'. Produced by Johnny Douglas who also wrote the song with Karen Poole, the song merges synth-pop with an American-flavoured R&B sound. It became a Top 5 hit in Australia and the UK as well as Top 10 in Denmark, Ireland and Spain. The music video was shot in Los Angeles by director Jake Nava, who previously directed 'Crazy in Love' and 'Milkshake'.

Hated the freakin’ around lyric but over time I’ve come to appreciate this sassy little gem as something a bit different from within her vast catalogue.
Really liked it at the time, I much preferred it to Britney's Toxic. Some of the media I remember tried to compare the two.
Not really a fan of red blooded woman. One of her weakest Parlophone singles. It’s too urban sounding and hate the sound of her over processed voice. Bring on ‘slow’ any day!
I enjoy it, but I definitely liked it more at the time. It's not aged particularly well for me.

I'm actually the opposite! I wasn't actually that keen on it at the time. Over the years I've come around to it more - but it'll never be a Kylie essential for me.

 

The sales were rather strong for #5 weren't they? Just checked and it was 39,812. I Believe in You sold a little less than that when it peaked at #2 later in the year, 39,321!

I always say the same for the BL era - it was such a meh era for me, after the euphoric ‘Fever’ I really disliked everything about BL.

 

I went out and bought all the singles and formats but was not into any of it at all, now looking back i think all the singles are ICONIC and some of my favorite Kylie songs (even though the album is a miss for me).

 

I loved her look throughout the BL era too but again at the time I didn’t care for any of it.

I didnt care for it too much then and same now, i did like slow and still do but it wasnt the single i wanted at the time, red blooded woman never really clicked with me and chocolate went very unnoticed for me until i went to showgirl and the song just completely clicked with me and i really like it since then.

Cruise control is a better song than Red Blooded Woman.

Red Blooded Woman has aged like milk.

This is actually one of my very favourite Kylie songs! The production is like a mashup of Justin Timberlake's 'Cry Me a River' and Destiny's Child's 'Survivor' but I think Kylie brings a lot to the song. She oozes confidence and sexuality, which is further evident in the music video - an overlooked gem! It made me yearn for this type of sexual, self-assured sound from Kylie again and thankfully we did get that with 'Padam Padam' and 'Tension'.

Yeah it was quite unfortunate to be released on such a competitive week. It was the highest sale for a #5 position in 2004 and wasn't far off the 43,291 that 'Slow' opened with.

 

Those sales could have seen it #3 if released a week earlier or later (even #1 if released two weeks earlier! :o).

Would you say this has happened more times than the reverse? Ie Kylie benefiting from a low sales week and getting a high position?

I think it's fair to say it's swings and roundabouts, like for instance she got very lucky with both 'Spinning Around' and 'Slow' being released on the right week - a week either side and neither would have been number ones (which feels weird to consider in the case of the former)

'Slow' is the first that comes to mind - those 43k sales wouldn't have seen it #1 in any other week of the last third of 2003.

 

I have a post here that shows where Kylie's singles would have charted with the same sales if release a week earlier or later. 'In Your Eyes' not even Top 5 if released a week later! :drama:

In your eyes was a surprise in the one week later/earlier scenario as was get outta my way which seemed destined to never go top 10,
