California Dreamin'

Midnight Train to Georgia

New York City Cops

King of New York

Texas Cowboys

Virginia Plain

(voted for a few others too but the above are particular faves)

Plus, of course, UTAH SAINTS U U U UTAH SAINTS! *.*

Boston, Kansas and Chicago were all band names, probably more too in existence. Chicago's UK #1 If You Leave Me Now is fab as is Boston's More Than A Feeling - only #22 in the UK what?!

Cant believe danG forgot about Boston and Chicago

Boston and Chicago aren't states. Kansas' only chart hit peaked at #51 and this poll seems to be only top 40 hits.

Only voted for Texas, Utah Saints in the band names

Voted for songs New York Groove, Hotel California, Paloma's New York, Fairytale of New York, Englishman in New York

Voted for:

Sweet Home Alabama

California Girls [not "Gurls"]

California Dreamin'

Hotel California

Theme From 'New York, New York'

Fairytale Of New York

Leaving New York

Virginia Plain

and Utah Saints

The majority of US-state based songs are named all named after California (with a couple of good New York ones too). 'California Dreamin' is my absolute fave here (and one of my all time favourite songs), although Belinda Carlisle's 'California' is a close second. Although could we not have bent the rules a little and allowed 'Californication'?

Bands-wise, Texas are the only contender here, head and shoulders above the rest.

How many states have NOT had a hit song named after them?

Voted for Sweet Home Alabama, California Dreamin' (Mamas & The Papas), Hotel California, California Love, California (Phantom Planet), Massachusetts, Fairytale Of New York, Englishman In New York & Moving To New York.

For bands Texas & Utah Saints.

How many states have NOT had a hit song named after them?

Most of them - I only count 17/50 on this poll (still only 21/50 if you generously count both of the Carolinas and Dakotas too).

Cast 10 votes:

Mamas And The Papas

Eagles

Phantom Planet

Bee Gees x2

Odyssey

Pogues

Sting

Wombats

Paloma

Bonus poll: Tennessee Ernie Ford

'Banks Of The Ohio' and Ohio Express, more votes for those please.

I also selected 'Dani California', Arizona Zervas, Florida Georgia Line and Utah Saints.

Flo Rida should be in the artists or does the gap matter to much?
'Banks Of The Ohio' and Ohio Express, more votes for those please.

There's also a 70s band called Ohio Players but they only made #43 in the UK chart so not on the list.

I voted for:

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama

Beach Boys - California Girls

Mamas and the Papas - California Dreamin

Beach Boys - California Saga

Phantom Planet - California

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California

Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg - California Gurls

Perry Como - Delaware

Charlie Daniels Band - The Devil Went Down To Georgia

ZZ Top - My Head's In Mississippi

T.Rex - New York City

Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York

Strokes - New York City Cops

R.E.M. - Leaving New York

Wombats - Moving To New York

Chuck Berry - Memphis Tennessee

Beyoncé - Texas Hold 'Em

and:

Arizona Zervas

Florida Georgia Line

Voted for my top 5:

2Pac feat. Dr Dre - California Love (#6, 1996)

Bee Gees - Massachusetts (#1, 1967)

Bee Gees - New York Mining Disaster 1941 (#12, 1967)

Mamas and the Papas - California Dreamin (#9, 1966)

The Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York (#2, 1987)

I was thinking a lot of the New York songs are probably referring to the city rather than the state. But there's not really much point in going through them all to try and work it out.
Special shoutout to Sufjan Stevens who had the greatest idea back in the day to make 50 albums, one for each state in the US... of course the project was over-ambitious and he only made 2 :) but still... we got Illinois and Michigan :)
