is it not blatantly obvious it's targeted :,) no spontaneous assault on The Script getting a #1 album but the moment it's a fellow pop girl like Chappell or Charli all of a sudden she releases a new variant midweek - it's nothing short of embarrassing on Taylor's end. there are popstars like Chappell who evidently do it all for the love of artistry and self-expression, and those like Taylor who unashamedly do it for money and power. she's a real stain on what is otherwise the most expressive & varied mainstream pop scene we've seen in many years
I personally don't think it's targeted at specific artists at all. In the US I believe she's clearly just trying to get as many weeks as she possibly can at number 1 and if she's close to number 1/has a chance to extend her lead to secure it, that's when the digital variants drop (Adele has the record at 24 weeks for solo women not sure about who has it overall and whether that is the target for Taylor or not). She doesn't release any if she isn't anywhere near (ala Eminem release week in the US). If her or her team see that she's in with a real shot at number 1, that's when they release those digital variants.

(EDIT: Does the Twitter embed work?? I can't see it in this post OR the post I did for it in Taylor's forum... Link direct to the post is HERE)

I believe this isn't the first time where if you didn't include her digital sales (and kept everyone elses) she'd have still been number 1. The *digital* variants really don't account for as much as people like to believe they do. The only time I think Swifties have actively fought for the number 1 beyond it's first couple of weeks of release was last week when Ka*ye released... but even then I can't confirm whether there were any active campaigns for it (I'm assuming there was) or whether it was just Swifties being powerful enough to block him.

Back to Chappell and she is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT with what she's saying. A lot of fans are so entitled nowadays and it's really gross! It feels worse now than it did back then as it only used to be the Paparazzi that were horrendous in public situations towards celebrities. Fans feel like celebrities owe them EVERYTHING and that's really not how it works.

By my estimates, "HOT TO GO!" should be certified 2x Platinum in late October, which would make it Chappell's third multi-platinum song. @Tafty @Scene

I've only just found out that good luck babe isn't even on this album whoops had always assumed it was. So this is a very strange case of people hearing/liking one song and then going back to an older album by the same artist which never charted, wonder when the last time this situation happened.

Chappell's situation seems rather unique to me!

There's been occasions when an artist's current album becomes so massive that the previous album became a success for the first time as well... like Shania Twain and The Corrs (from a UK perspective). Even Madonna... her debut album only really became a big success in the UK (maybe worldwide?) when her second album Like a Virgin was huge. A couple of singles from her debut album were re-released in the UK during her second album era and became bigger hits than they previously had been.

Oh so she cancelled two dates of her tour and rescheduled one in Europe, only couple of days before the shows. This is bad BAD BAD - come on, you don't do that even if you get the chance to perform at the VMAs. At least reschedule them all.

I am also so tired of artists coming to the UK and think they are doing an European tour.

I saw a lot of stuff about that on twitter but not really seeing the big deal. Her show in Paris was at Le Bataclan which holds 1500 people and the show in Amsterdam was at the Melkweg which also holds 1500 people. So these weren’t huge shows with tons of people making big arrangements etc. it would be foolish to miss the VMA’s. I’m sure she can do those cities another time at probably much bigger venues now she is a lot bigger. It’s a no brainer really.
I can understand the irritation (I’d be a bit pissed) but the VMAs must take priority! :P She’ll own the night!!
The biggest problem is that they informed the fans so late. Like a few days prior! The VMA performance has been known for a week already. Now there are hundreds of people who have already traveled to Berlin/Amsterdam/Paris.

Bigger venues come with a more expensive price tag. These were shows for the fans that have been riding with Chappell since before she blew up, the tickets went on sale in March and Good Luck, Babe! came out in April, so the fans she's letting down are her long-term diehard fans. It's a bad look and the least she could've done is reschedule these shows out of respect for her fans, but those same fans will now be fighting with thousands of other people to get more expensive tickets to whenever she next plays Paris or Amsterdam, and there's no guarantee they'll get them. It's a bit of a crappy move - more likely from her label/management, but cancelling instead of postponing shows that maybe nobody really cared about those shows anyway.

I mean it's a totally different situation, as the Euro tour isn't even a proper tour in Chappell's case, BUT here is Gaga's touring schedule when she already had TWO #1s on Billboard Hot 100 in 2009. She did all these small theaters and concert halls in Europe because they were scheduled before she made it big. Now, I'm pretty sure Chappell will come to Europe, but they have also shown their priorities with this decision - it's money and fame over fans.

It's very much giving me memories of how disastrously Adele handled the whole Vegas cancellation saga.

(Although at least she had the grace to try and address it personally)

It is a bit shit cancelling so late, I'd be in bits if it was my date tbf. The capacity doesn't matter, she's still letting down fans and I'm sure she could have cancelled with more notice or found a way to rearrange those shows too. In saying that, she absolutely has to do the VMAs, the shows can be rescheduled, I'm sure she's going to end up doing a bigger tour in the near future as well so it's not the end of the world. The VMAs would have been more of a loss as who knows it she'll get that chance next year?
I don't begrudge her for seizing the opportunity of the VMAs, but outright cancelling those two dates instead of rescheduling them is a crappy move to say the least. To the fans who were going to those venues, that was the one opportunity to see her at those smaller size venue for a cheap-ish price - and as mentioned, they were dedicated to her before she blew up. I feel bad for them!

She (or rather her label and management) screwed me over before by changing the London dates and not just transferring tickets but refunding and making you buy them again, I got mine on resale as the date I wanted sold out quick regardless of her being smaller then, still before Good Luck Babe blew up, and thus didn’t get the presale link and obviously it was impossible to get tickets when they went back up.

I completely understand where it’s coming from and I agree she would be silly to pass up the VMAs, but little things like the way that was handled and especially these Europe dates, when she could so easily meet in the middle and prioritise the fans who have got her where she is. It’s probably difficult managing blowing up so quickly in the middle of going to tour but surely rearranging around opportunities is easy enough instead of just leaving those fans for the two shows cancelled in the dust.

As much as I’m happy for an artist I love getting so much success, I almost wish she had just gone on to be like a Carly Rae level gay fave instead of blowing up so much this quickly D:

I think it's bs. She's trying to have it both ways with playing the 'I don't care about the fame' side and then also making moves that shows she clearly does.

There's nothing I dislike more than inauthenticity in a music star tbh.

They have handled this terribly but I don't think she's inauthentic — I think she and her team are struggling (in different ways) with this meteoritic rise and making mistakes in the process.

Yeah I agree, I can’t imagine managing someone and one minute it’s small shows and the odd festival then seemingly overnight it’s the VMAs, all these opportunities, all these new fans. It takes time to formulate a show, to book a tour, so it’s probably difficult timing in terms of it being as she’s about to do a fairly small tour for the calibre of artist she is now. It’s natural they make mistakes but it is very frustrating and really shit for the fans who are caught up in it and missing their shows.

Imagine doing your job and you’re responsible for one small thing then suddenly you’re a global CEO on a large scale, it must feel a bit like that depending on who her team is etc.

I think that's a bit much no? She's not inauthentic, the decision probably isn't even up to her, she's signed to a label and still has contractual obligations. This is all new to her as well, she'll still have people in her ear telling her the moves she has to make for her career. If she doesn't comply then they'll drop her, at least that's usually how it works. She's not really in a position to go independent just yet.

I genuinely don't think she cares about fame, at least not in the "celebrity" sense, she just wants a successful music career but that will come with fame when in it's peak and of course she'll know that, it doesn't mean she has to ignore any boundaries she wants for herself but that's me linking back to the other stuff surrounding her rn. Yes it's shit that shows have been cancelled and people are missing out but i think the people that are solely blaming Chappell for it and making out that she's fake and doesn't care for her fans are being ridiculous.

I reckon she'll put out a statement explaining a bit more once they've managed to sort out a plan for the cancelled shows.

£14 for an album that’s a year old? They should knock it down to at least £11 or lower and it would encourage more people to buy it
