Reading comments in the Little Mix forum right now about the 'disasterous' outcome for Perrie's career with her new single flopping got me thinking of any other examples in recent times of artists from groups who tried to go solo but didn't even up doing as well as hyped at the time...

I shall start this thread with Tulisa from N-Dubz whose solo career wasn't handled as well as perhaps it could have been. Three Top 20 singles in 2012 then a flopped #44 single in 2015. It started with this one which made it all the way to #1 at the time;

What other examples can you think of from the 21st century?

Aston Merrygold from JLS? Though I don't know if he was expected to do much.

Zayn from 1D, I think he had a lot of initial momentum that he didn't make the most of.

Ronan comes to mind for me. Wasn't mad on his output from 03 onwards and the quality certainly went to really rubbish, with a thrown in cover of 'Iris' in there too which was unnecessary.

These names floating around in a 21st Century Throwback forum

Fine, here is a throwback for you Calum, it's Duncan James from Blue, with his only other UK Top 40 single after a #2 duet from 2004;

sadly the answer is 99% of them (all except Harry Styles)

Michelle Williams is always heartbreaking for me. Although I get it. She came in part way through DC and they only really had 2-3 albums with her. But 'We Break The Dawn' would have smashed if released by Beyonce. And her albums are of a decent quality

I would also throw Jo O'Meara in - watched her bandmate score multiple hits and then limped into the top 20 with an uninspired cover.

A lot of artists that go solo get that initial buzz and some middling hits but can't sustain it.

Always thought H&Claire was a good example of diminished returns (#3, #8, #10) and then the album bombed. Their number 10 single (All out Of Love) really should have been their debut

Cheryl. Went from million-selling solo artist to diminishing returns with each subsequent era.

Nicole Scherzinger - shelved album to #1 single to Boomerang which basically killed her career.

Mel B and Victoria as well. Didn't help that they cancelled Victoria's album though. I don't think she was moving the needle that much anyway.
idk if this counts but can we also talk about how Kelly Rowland's management screwed her over in the US by not pushing Commander or Down For Whatever here (especially the latter) considering how much that sound was permeating through the pop landscape?

I think Cheryl is probably the last example I would choose for this thread. Of course the wheels fell off eventually but for a good 5 years she was considered a massive name.

Isn’t Victoria the only member to have a 100% top 10 streak? :kink: :kink: :drink: (all bops btw!!!!)

I’m travelling atm so can’t check for definite. But she’s also the only one to not have a solo number 1!

Correct and correct.
