Biography

There’s a lovely moment a little ways into Apple Music’s Songwriter documentary about Ed Sheeran in which Sheeran, jet-lagged and carrying a cup of tea, straggles out into a yard in Malibu at dawn, sits down at his laptop and begins writing a song about the moment right in front of him: the crisp air, the birdsong, the hot tea, the day ahead. He gets a full verse in, melody and all, then pauses. “Songs are weird things,” he says. “How so?” an interviewer asks. “They just come and go,” Sheeran says, smiling. “And they never give you any warning.” For Sheeran, they seem to come pretty reliably. Born in 1991 in Halifax, England, he started out gigging on the UK pub circuit before releasing his first studio album, +, in 2011, and has since become one of the most unstoppable singer-songwriters in music, forging a light blend of folk, pop, hip-hop and dance that feels slick but lived-in, intimate but universal. Whether on his own (“Sing”, “The A Team”, “Shape of You”, “Perfect”) or in collaboration with artists from Taylor Swift to Eminem to Justin Bieber, Sheeran has a unique ability to strike a chord that feels both bittersweet and redemptive, good-natured and genuine: the hopeless romantic who convinces you he might just be right. In 2017, he was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, touching Prince Charles on the arm while shaking his hand—a breach of royal protocol, and an appealingly human one at that. - Apple Music

Just the one future hit for this week! Thanks all for bearing with me this week, it's been a little more chaotic than usual!!

I'm off to a gig so the sales rip will either arrive when I get home much later, or another chart mod may get on it if they're free.

Was Alors On Danse the last French language only Top 40 hit? Can’t think of any others since then?

'Tilted' by Christine and the Queens!

Tilted has both an English and French version. The middle eight is still in French in the English version.

Looks like this may end up falling just short of the EOY top 100 - that would make it the second longest running #1 of any year not to make that same year's after Ariana's 'positions' missed out in 2020 - although it did make it in 2021.
#1 in January, calling it now. Or maybe sooner.

Well there's still time for you to put some money on it being Christmas #1. Excellent odds at 33/1 but I doubt they'll stay that good for long!

New peaks and new entries outside the top 40:

41. Lola Young - Messy (+14)

49. Tom Grennan - It Can't Be Christmas (+34)

67. Laufey - Christmas Magic (NEW)

84. Rosé - number one girl (NEW)

87. Twenty One Pilots - The Line (NEW)

Is it just me or does tv off's production sound a bit Christmassy? I expect it to still be top 5 in January though.

I have something to ask. Does AIWFCIY have the most weeks at #2 for any song in the UK?
Finally caught up, nice to see the Christmas impact lessen throughout the week, boo at Ed and Elton reset though. Great that Kendrick has another number 1 album and that Squabble Up is his top track, shame TV ON couldn't quite over take luther. Absolutely called Stromae making the top 40!

Ed & Elton hasn’t been reset, it wasn’t released until the first week of December in 2021 so it may disappear next week!

Yeah no reset for Ed and Elton, it’s just not reached the 3-year-instant-ACR threshold yet! In an ideal world it’ll be off to ACR next week but I have to be doubtful tbh, I imagine they’ll probs keep it on SCR all season
I mean it definitely is a reset, it was #81 behind Slade in the Monday Update. We just don't know if it will be allowed to stay on SCR.
It may only have been reset due to a 50% increase but it’s still within the three year rule as it was released on 3/12/21 so it’ll be SCR due to this for another week at least.

Kendrick really managing to get to 12 top 10 hits while maintaining his run of only peaking between 4 and 7 :cheeseblock: fast becoming my new favourite obscure chart stat x (cool that he has managed a new peak as lead artist!)

Something definitely does seem a bit weird about Stromae being so high already, crazy that it's already outpeaked 'Alors On Danse'.

And I guess it looks like 'Merry Christmas' is being allowed one more run on SCR after all - I'd be surprised if they bothered shunting it back to ACR during this run now.

Cynthia Erivo must the first act ever to start their chart career with two simultaneous top 40 hits.

I know a couple of other examples were given already but Imagine Dragons technically did this too, and with 2 solo tracks at that - albeit it was a bit of a cheat as 'Hear Me' was charting mainly just because it happened to be track 1 on a 4 track EP which also contained 'Radioactive', so it's likely both entries were because of people wanting to download the latter. There's also the artists who had multiple appearances in the very first chart of course :magic: (and I'm sure there must be others too).
