FAQs

What is streaming? What are the chart rules regarding streaming?

For streaming and chart rules related FAQs read this thread.

How many streams equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread.

How much does streaming contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole. Spotify counts for at least half of this, with Apple Music and Amazon also big contributors. YouTube is also big however most of YouTube's streams are at the free tier so won't count for as much.

Why is my fave not doing well?

Is it being promoted on a major curated playlist, and/or going viral on TikTok? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists on Spotify from a UK standpoint. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist. Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped releases, such as the recent album impacts from Drake and Taylor Swift.

Spotify

How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. For the full top 200, use the link below to go to Spotify's website. You can also use the Kworb website which displays the data in an easier to read format and also contains additional information, however this is often out of date.

What are the most influential Spotify playlists?

Links to Spotify's top playlists are as below.

Hot Hits UK

Today's Top Hits

How often does the Spotify chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although on occasion there will be a delay.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Apple Music

How do I see today's Apple Music chart?

You can use the link below to view the Apple Music top 100 through Kworb. If you have Apple Music, you can also view the top 200 by going to the Charts section and clicking on See All in the Top Songs section.

Nah the See You Again stuff is legit imo. It got a boost from the new Tyler album and then fell off again a bit afterwards

I agree about the initial boost but then it went and had a second wind a month after that which never made much sense to me. On Dec 28th there was a big decline to a new equilibrium everywhere. I love the song and don't doubt its popularity, but it was just a touch higher than made sense until last week I thought.

Messy back up to #2 on Apple Music maybe Gracie is ACR a week or two this week? You never know but then ACR is a lottery atm

It'll be 3 weeks minimum for Gracie to go to ACR. First week of the year is always an increase

January singles chart get chock to death with old song move back scr have wait 3 and 4 week old song go back acr new music come though

Here’s hoping we get some surprise release or viral hit, otherwise looking to be a pretty stale few weeks.

Hoping Headlock will start blowing up in a big way soon.

I miss the days when the first few weeks of the year had loads of new, interesting, sometimes random stuff. (Early January #1s for Babylon Zoo, Tori Amos, Lady Gaga, Basshunter come to mind)

Double Bruno in the Spotify top 3 with DWAS less than 3k behind 'APT.'

New peaks include Chrystal #25, Tyla #32, SZA - BMF #34, Imogen Heap #46

In the weekly Spotify chart, 'Clean Baby Sleep White Noise' is #23

Another song’s Spotify numbers I’m very suspicious of is Slow It Down.

Was very stable before completely tanking in December and is now back up to doing big numbers again

If White Noise doesn't chart in the audio streaming today it's probably safe to say it's not eligible for the charts. It's outdone the weekly peak of Evergreen (26) which is the closest comparison I can make of a track that does way better on Spotify than elsewhere
Would be hilarious if espresso got a reset

If it went ACR before the Christmas rush and didn’t get the 25% increase, then it shouldn’t get a reset

If it went ACR before the Christmas rush and didn’t get the 25% increase, then it shouldn’t get a reset

And they already contradicted that in the midweeks :P

The only song in the midweeks that appeared to be reset without having gone to ACR during the festive period was This Is What You Came For lol (quite why, I have no idea, unless it is still on ACR and the data was wonky). I don't know why there's any panicking about Sabrina when the midweeks showed Espresso and Taste on ACR, and they do the manual resets to avoid any 25% increases this week in a volatile market. Bed Chem's on SCR, it hasn't gone to ACR at all.
Looks like they been reset on the Irish chart just published so who knows

The rules will have to have changed for that to happen here, which is entirely possible, but there's no precedent for it in the UK charts as things stand.

Exactly we just don't know

I was wondering if Robbie would make any impact with the Better Man film / accompanying social media discourse and have just noticed these on Apple:

135 +25 Robbie Williams - Rock DJ

200 NEW Robbie Williams - Angels
