First two I can think of are X Factor with the shock exit of Maria Lawson and Shayne winning.

Live 8 is another notable event from this year!

It's definitely not the lightest moment of the year to start off with but I remember vividly the news pictures this year of a double decker bus with its roof blown off by a bomber in London around July time. I can still see that bus and thinking New York had its attack in 2001 and now terrorism has landed on our doorstep fearing the worst. :(

This was the January/February of the infamous Elvis re-issues. Genuine fear at the time on forums that he would number 1 each week with a different song for months! Luckily, it didn't quite pan out like that.

The Olympics being awarded to the city of LON-DON

Yeah, I immediately think of Crazy Frog and You're Beautiful too.

 

And with You're Beautiful comes Bad Day by Daniel Powter - the two seemed stuck together for ages, and it was unusual for the songs of the summer to be two such slow numbers.

 

I also think of the huge success of albums by Kelly Clarkson and KT Tunstall, Mariah's big comeback with The Emancipation of Mimi, and Girls Aloud's critical reappraisal with Biology (though you could argue that started the year before with Love Machine).

THIS ICONIC SEASON

 

The UK dance music of 2005 I preferred to the years before at the time, besides the 80s remixes there was also quite a bit of disco influenced dance in the UK. But I think pop was better in the early 00s.

 

The Avenue by Roll Deep I remember too, I lumped it in with the 80s remixes as it is technically a remix of an 80s song.

 

Not a big fan of mid 00s indie but there was some stuff I liked - Feel Good Inc of course (reminded by Jester's profile pic),Dare , Hard-Fi, Caesars.

Hung Up would certainly be in my top 10 of the whole year, I've just done January hits for now.

The Way to Amarillo was absolutely everywhere that year. School discos, pantos etc.

Hanson scraping the top 10 with Penny & Me was a highlight for me. Even on low sales I never thought it would happen.

 

James Blunt, Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers, KT Tunstall, Gwen Stefani were all very heavily played by me this year as well as Anastacia’s Greatest Hits.

 

Also Kate Bush’s Aerial.

I was obsessed with Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc, especially the video and the use of the Ghibli-esque floating lighthouse island.

2005 was when I started posting regularly on Coolclarity, Buzzjack’s predecessor.

 

It’s telling that my top 10 of the year all reached the top 10 on the charts (many number 1 or 2). Looks like my taste hasn’t changed in 20 years but chart music has!

Such a shame all those bloody Elvis re-issues marred the early section of the year chart wise, I wish so much they hadn't happened.

 

The midweeks were so awful back then, as most of the Elvis singles obviously sold extremely well on the first day so it always looked like he'd be No.1 initially.

 

Sometimes the competition couldn't claw a way past by the end of the week as sales were so low generally, so he did end up with a few No.1s, but so many deserving songs ended up with lower peaks of 2/3/4/5 due to this series. The CDs were seen as collectors items at the time and were numbered, so fans snapped them up, but a quick check on eBay shows they are worth very little now.

 

I remember Michael Jackson had a similar series the following year but it didn't do anywhere near as well, mostly top 20 area iirc.
