Everybody Hurts is one of my favourite songs by probably my favourite band ever. It’s also massively important to my wife and I. It was there for us during our baby son’s long illness and, after it h

'Seven Nation Army' landing at number 7 in a poll of the best number 7s

VOTING IS NOW CLOSED Thanks to the 43 people who voted. That's eight more than in the number 6 single final last year. The results will start later this week.

Everybody Hurts is one of the few songs that can bring me to tears, beautiful track. Not a huge country fan but I think Jolene is a great track from the genre

I hoped to get through the top 10 without appearing in any song's bottom 3, well oops - 'Jolene' is OK, just not one that's been on my radar much.

'Everybody Hurts' ❤️ simply one of my favourite songs ever. I haven't been through anything as traumatic as Jaz13music related on the previous page. The song has however been a source of comfort to me through many difficult times and has good memories as well as bad. I first heard the parent album Automatic For The People in early 1997 and it spoke to me like nothing else had - it quickly became my all-time favourite album and R.E.M. my favourite band, things I doubt will ever change now.

“Jolene” has to be one of the most iconic country hits ever.

“Everybody Hurts” ❤️ : in a way it’s amazing it wasn’t a multi week #1 and just spent a couple of weeks in the Top 10 with unremarkable sales. But I guess the album was huge and that worked against singles at the time.

Thanks for the ‘hugs’, I wasn’t expecting that. To be honest I was a bit taken aback/emotional, in a good way.

You have a lovely community and as a relative newbie I am glad to be a small part of it!❤️

Disco 2000 overtakes 'Faded' as the single with the most 50 point scores. Six voters put this one down as their favourite. It was the third single to be taken from Pulp's fifth album, 'Different Class', the previous two had both gone as high as number 2. Sadly, the real Deborah, who the song was about, died in 2014 at the age of 51, the day before her MBE was announced.

3. Abba - Lay All Your Love On Me 1456pts

Writers - Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus

Top scores - Campbell 50, Jade 49, Brer 49

Low scores - detonate 2, vibe 3, ElectroBoy 5

This is the highest placed song from the 1980s. Lay All Your Love On Me was never intended to be a single and there was no promotional video made for it. It was released as a 12 inch single after a remixed version became popular in nightclubs. At the time, it was the best selling 12 inch single in the UK.

Disco 2000 💜

Absolutely love it. I remember the first time I heard the album and I was amazed there was another song on it to rival Common People, and after a few plays I decided I actually preferred it and was thrilled when it became the third single... albeit slightly gutted when it "only" made #7, although I'm sure that was primarily because it was just before christmas and so many had already bought the album.

I didn't know the sad story there about the real Deborah though Rollo 😕

Ohhhhh and my favourite ABBA song, it's wonderful (even though I do still prefer the Erasure version sorry not sorry)

I prefer the version from Mamma Mia!

Out of the Britpop big 4 Pulp are the band I enjoy the least so gave Disco 2000 a relatively low score. Also not a huge ABBA fan but Lay All Your Love On Me is probably my favourite out of their songs I know, definitely my best friend's favourite though!

“Disco 2000” is a great Britpop classic - Pulp did incredible storytelling.

I’ve always loved ABBA but I appreciate “Lay All Your Love On Me” more the older I get: it really combines that early 80s synth magic with the best of their sound.

ABBA were my 48 and REM my 49, but my 50 is still in!

Nooooo. The thing I wanted most in this rate was for the brilliant Disco 2000 to finish as the top indie / 90s track ahead of Creep, which imo is the one grossly overrated single by an otherwise incredible band.

I was actually low key hoping Disco 2000 might win. Still, 4th is pretty good.

All my top 3 favourites are in the last 5 with 1st and 3rd to come. Wasn’t expecting that so I’m pleasantly surprised!

I love both ABBA and Pulp and those two songs are among my favourites of theirs.

I only just found out that “(Don’t You) Forget About Me” wasn’t written by Simple Minds. It’s wonderful though - such a warm emotive track.

Funnily enough Simple Minds performed this on Jonathan Ross last night to promote their upcoming live album!
