Posted March 28Mar 28 It's 20 years today since the release of 'Giving You Up', the second single from the compilation 'Ultimate Kylie'. Produced by Xenomania, this electropop song follows an unusual structure - the chorus first appears at the halfway point - and features vocals that are more spoken than sung. It was a Top 10 in Australia, Spain and the UK, although it does rank as one of Kylie's lowest selling singles in the latter. In 2023, Nicola Roberts revealed that Girls Aloud had recorded 'Giving You Up' and were surprised to hear Kylie's version on the radio.20 years on, what are your thoughts and memories of 'Giving You Up'?
March 28Mar 28 I think it's very under rated and possibly forgotten but I loved it then and still do now, this and I believe in you were 2 great back to back singles that I've always wished that kylie stayed on that lane for a full studio album at the time.
March 28Mar 28 Liked it at the time but I’ve played it more often recently and love it now… electropop and Kylie’s vocals go so well together. I added it to my Spotify playlist a few months ago (that somehow has grown to 12,000 saves) and its daily streams doubled.
March 28Mar 28 It's an absolute fave of mine, so underrated. I doubt she'll ever even acknowledge it again 😭I remember buying CD1 and CD2 on the day it was released, those really were the halcyon days!
March 28Mar 28 I didn't know that Girls Aloud had recorded this, but listening to it, it would work so well as a group song.Guess it would sound like GA as it's written by Xenomania. It's okay, but not great as a Kylie single.
March 28Mar 28 Author It's definitely one of her most forgotten singles but strangely that works in its favour for me, like when I listen to my Kylie playlist and this comes on, it's nice to just to a straight up bop without all the fanfare. Just had a look at the midweeks from the time and 'Giving You Up' started off at #3! It had fallen to #3 by Thursday ('Let Me Love You' by Mario and new release 'It's Like That' by Mariah Carey moved ahead) before falling to #6 officially (overtaken by 'Candy Shop' by 50 Cent). It was a lower selling chart the following week so it could have been #3 if held back. I know Kylie had started touring at this point but it's a shame we didn't get a TOTP or any other televised performance for this. We only have the Showgirl Tour performance which I forget even exists as Kylie dropped the song for Showgirl Homecoming in favour of 'White Diamond'. I'm definitely intrigued to hear Girls Aloud's version, I can hear them singing it in my head.
March 28Mar 28 Author Funny that one of Kylie's most forgotten singles was home to one of her most celebrated B-sides! What's everyone's thoughts on 'Made of Glass'? It's another Xenomania produced song that I could see fitting Girls Aloud like a glove, it's not a million miles away from something like 'Swinging London Town'. Apparently this one was recorded by Rachel Stevens.

I was hoping she'd at least stay ahead of the Elvis reissue, but sadly that wasn't to be.
March 28Mar 28 Glad kylie acknowledged its anniversary as its definitely a single she has well moved on from.
March 30Mar 30 Giving You Up will always have a special place in my heart I was obsessed with the video at the time, and then of course its inclusion on the Showgirl Tour was great - slotted in perfectly in the opening act. Replacing it with White Diamond I could never really sniff at because when you look at the Showgirl Homecoming tour that fits the vibe perfectly with the changes she made.
March 30Mar 30 Love this track but as others have said, such a forgotten part of Kylie’s singles history.
