It's not that the TikTok generation doesn't care about big name comebacks, TikTok isn't that new and last year alone we saw big name comebacks from Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Eminem, Billie Eilish and Beyoncé debut high up to name just a few. I guarantee if Taylor dropped a new single this week it'd have an enormous debut once again, and I think the likes of Harry Styles, Sabrina Carpenter, etc would still see big debuts with brand new material.

Obviously added context adds nuance to the situation so it's not a black and white thing about TikTok. Miley's been inconsistent her entire career, and I think the rollout for this has been a bit messy and confusing (though I did expect more from this single at this stage, hopefully it can recover in time). We've discussed countless times how Ed's not at the peak stage of his career anymore and he was always less big in the US than the UK (not that he wasn't big there).

Quick recovery for the legacy act 😆 Nothing anymore should be written off on day one or two, or even week one or two. There is a new status quo going on in terms of how long it takes people to adapt

But thats exactly what the comparison wanted to Show, how people only care about whats on tiktok

This is Mileys lead for her new album her proper comeback after the gigantic Flowers and no One cares

I mean, Miley released a brand new single months after 'Flowers' which didn't exactly set the world on fire so it's not like she's a guaranteed blockbuster smasher.

Like, I don't use TikTok myself (not my kind of content, that's fine), but I always find the treatment of it as some sort of omniscient spectre of influence so weird, and strangely utilised at that. 'X can't get a hit anymore because TikTok, therefore Gen Z have short attention spans?' It used to be 'Y just keeps getting hits on past reputation because insert generation have no imagination or desire to discover new and better artists'. It's just this clumsy self-correcting attempt to both try and explain why certain music is popular but with this odd veneer of 'back in my day we had standards and control', like it's any different to a baby boomer insisting that music was objectively better when they were a teenager. All the while, using isolated examples that fit the narrative, and ignoring the cases that don't. C'mon, we're all better than this.

Or alternatively, they're big on TikTok because people care about them?

Is there not an Andy Williams song that’s big there currently?

It's only had an effect on the sales chart sadly... but I doubt the TikTokkers care who sings it as it got used in some TV show and that's what they care about

Ed back in Top 20 and Miley back in Top 200 today 😀

There was always the argument that playlists swayed charts and that it was passive plays based on someone else's decision of what should be on said playlists.

So the TikTok argument...

Surely if someone likes a song on TT then they have to ask Alexa to play it or seek it out on Spotify, for example.

That means it's not a passive play, so effectively makes the charts more real on popularity of a song based on what an individual likes rather than what's on a random playlist?

yes Janet is in <3 hope it climbs more

also surprised at see this Show me Love song top 5 now

and whats that Jason Derulo re-entry? sounds fishy to debut so high...

Exactly wasn't there 2 singles after flowers that didn't do anything Jaded and (sorry drawing blank) Used to be Young was only a moderate hit afterwards as well

but she didn't push them, this is her proper comeback imo

at least she's re-entering today and doing well on Amazon

I was referring to 'Used to Be Young' (a terrible song though admittedly)

Both Jaded and Used to Be Young were "pushed", they have official videos and received Radio 1 playlisting. The former being a post-album single probably went against it (though it did get a top 40 peak on album release week), the latter didn't have that, it was a brand new song, "comeback" or not!

Janet :o TikTok really can give anything random a boost.

Show Me Love and Ordinary seem to be on every other video right now but not seen Janet yet.

Pleased to see Ed rebounding and Miley return.

So happy at the way Caramel is holding on. Do we think there's enough songs above it that are on ACR, or that it might have enough of a headstart from Friday, to stay Top 10 on Friday?

ne #186 Janet Jackson - Someone To Call My Lover cheer

About time Janet had a viral hit! Really hope this blows up more (and brings some more of her catalogue with it). Sad Someone To Call My Lover isn't even certified silver yet here, despite being a respectable hit at the time.
