Posted April 5Apr 5 CHART BATTLE REWINDZooming back to the early months of the new millennium, we revisit a chart battle involving newly solo Ginger Spice going against American rock band blink-182! I was too young to follow the charts back then but I can imagine it was an interesting week to follow. Ultimately, Geri came out on top with Bag It Up (maybe due to her BRITs performance?), securing her third consecutive chart-topper and in turn denying blink-182 their only real chance of getting a UK #1 with All The Small Things.Which is your number one? Vote above.
April 5Apr 5 I do have the 'Bag It Up' CD in my collection lol. Having said that 'All The Small Things' is evidently the superior song and so gets my vote!
April 5Apr 5 At the time, I probably was rooting for Geri. These days, Blink 182 is considerably better.
April 6Apr 6 This will be no surprise coming from one of BuzzJack’s Spice Girls forum mods, but I still find Bag It Up to be enjoyable! A highly camp disco-tinged pop song, full of the bravado and cheekiness that Geri had in bucketloads back then. She really sold the heck out of this song in the performances of it. Overall, I think it’s a fun pop package! I genuinely think it’s well produced, even though I’d concede that her vocals are… well, they’re Geri vocals!80s music fans / fans of Wham! might be interested to know that Pepsi and Shirlie perform backing vocals on this track. In the grand scheme of things, clearly All the Small Things has considerably more of a legacy, and on those grounds it feels like it would be more fitting that it made it to #1. However at the time I don’t think it felt out of place that Geri beat Blink-182. Bag It Up sold 255k within the year 2000 (42nd best seller) while All the Small Things sold 196k (67th).All the Small Things on paper is not my cup of tea, but I will say that the power of nostalgia is strong, to the point I have some affection for it, I wouldn’t skip it if it played. Side note: my favourite Blink-182 song is I Miss You.
April 7Apr 7 All The Small Things kinda annoys me these days but still prefer it to the bland Bag It Up.
April 7Apr 7 I don't like either song so from an objective standpoint Blink-182 clearly deserved the #1 more here
April 7Apr 7 I think I just about prefer 'All The Small Things', it's such a classic.Much as I despise Geri Halliwell and pretty much everything about her, 'Bag It Up' is a banger.
