CHART BATTLE REWIND

Now for a truly iconic battle! Anti-X Factor sentiment was already growing by its fifth series in 2008, when champion Alexandra Burke's Hallelujah was challenged for that year's Christmas number one by Jeff Buckley's more credible version. While Alexandra managed to beat Jeff, the following year's winner Joe McElderry faced stronger opposition from an almighty Facebook campaign pushing to get Rage Against The Machine's apt 1992 song Killing In The Name to Christmas #1, and blocking X Factor from dominating the festive chart for a fifth consecutive year. Joe's offering was a cover of Miley's hit from the previous year, The Climb. In the end, it was of course Rage Against The Machine that won, selling over 500,000 copies in one week to get the 2009 Christmas number one!

But which is your number one? Vote above. teresa

Killing In The Name. I don't usually get involved in fan campaigns, but that was too funny and iconic not to, I probably bought the track three times that week, and I do enjoy it anyway.

The Climb is terrible, although Joe is perfectly likeable. I prefer him to Leon Jackson for one.

I don't think people were sticking it to Joe himself, rather Cowell and 'the machine'.

My favourite ever chart battle to follow, was so pleased to be one I could follow when I was still into the charts, and still to this date, arguably the last truly great, culturally impactful chart battle.

Obviously Rage is better, an anarchic classic even before all this, Any Joe voters are banned (or at least need to explain themselves xx)

The Climb.

Whereas I understand people were fed up with X Factor dominating the Christmas No.1, Joe still made the top spot a week later.

Team Rage Against The Machine cheeseblock

this was brilliant to follow at the time, a rare occasion when I remember people at school / on Facebook talking about the charts

Rage Against The Machine. What a moment this was, at the height of X Factor domination and when the Christmas #1 really meant something too.

Don’t particularly like any of them. But Rage is SO FAR away from my personal tastes… I really cannot bear to listen to it.
