5K is terrible, she'll not gonna do even 10K

that's Katy Perry level of bad and I don't think Miley is at that place where the fanbase has all gone

I don't remember Miley ever having a really strong fan base In the UK, yes she has had a few big hit singles but I don't remember Miley having big numbers for her albums.

Show Me Love has hit ACR at just the right time IMO, it's clearly not going to peak any higher than #3 at this stage. It's just a shame other songs are making a mockery of the process...!

Isn't it supposed to be a visualiser album though , and she supposed to be releasing in cinemas for 24 hours,

Which makes me wonder if she even cares about this side of it

Katy’s peak was much bigger and lasted longer than Miley’s. Prism and Teenage Dream both debuted with ~54k, Miley’s absolute highest was Bangerz with 30k. Teenage Dream is 6x platinum and Miley’s best selling is only platinum. Miley’s career has had more peaks and valleys than Katy’s but I’d say Katy’s music is definitely more known overall.

I'd agree that Katy's peak was bigger and perhaps longer, so the decline has been more severe for Katy. But, in terms of where they are at this point in their career, I do think Miley going from 18k with her last album AND one of the biggest songs of the year to 5k on the Monday of midweeks is a bigger CURRENT fall than Katy, who was pretty stable from Smile to 143, but Katy's will probably be viewed as a bigger "flop" / get the "biggest pop girl flop of all time" comments, for some reason.

And when I say stable, I mean... still doing pretty poorly, but stable nonetheless 🤣

For what it's worth, I love both girls, and if Miley can get another #1 from this, who cares about the sales? So I don't want to pit women against one another because I don't enjoy them, I just find the discourse an interesting one, where some people are given a harsher criticism for their performance than others.

I love End of the World but I think she killed any momentum she might’ve had by releasing Something Beautiful first.

I prefered Something beautiful but couldn't get into End of the World.

Miley by the general public is more popular than what Katy is I’d say and I’d say Miley is far more musically talented and versatile so I think that it’s more likely she’d recover after this era and go onto score other hits.

Musically Katy’s huge success that she had earlier in her career was mainly limited to one particular style / sound and when she went away from that it went downhill for her.

Like with Miley we’ve seen she can underperform but then she can easily come back and score hits again (younger now was deemed an underperforming era for example) but with Katy she had nothing but major success through 2008-2014 and then after an underwhelming era she didn’t recapture the GP the same way Miley can.

I just feel like Miley hasn’t done very much to build a loyal fanbase. She doesn’t tour, she doesn’t do much promotion nowadays (she’s an artist who REALLY benefits from that like when she did covers in 2020), she’s been successful but she hasn’t had a period of consistent success. I’d compare her to Cher or Dolly Parton, icons and household names but not everything they release is a guaranteed hit.

Yes the entire visual film releases this weekend for 24 hours. I think this album is more so a creative project for Miley. Hoping that if the visual film goes well and they release the music videos for all the songs on youtube right after that it might give the album a small boost 2nd week to help soften its fall.

I feel like not touring is really hurting Miley’s career. Plastic Hearts and Endless Summer Vacation felt like the perfect albums for Miley to tour (especially in the UK) with album eras being so short these days, there’s not a lot for fans to get excited about if there’s not a tour.

I'm surprised she didn't tour those albums, she's the type of artist who would benefit hugely from touring. Has she spoken about her reasons for lack of touring?

The movie is only in cinemas for 24 hours? Thats really short

Yes she has. She's done an Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe

Yes. Miley doesn't want to tour generally due to the toll it can take on her voice (she suffers from Reinke's edema) and mental health. I don't blame her!

I understand her not touring (I wish more artists would be upfront about how damaging it can be), but I feel like she doesn’t really do anything to make up for it. She could do one-off shows, I feel like she’s the kind of artist who would go down very well at festivals

I don't know, I'd say Miley and Katy are at a very similar level of popularity/fame? The Bangerz era was absolutely huge AND Miley is coming off the back off an 18k first week sales figure, whereas Katy's was a follow up from Smile, which sold 8.5k in its first week.

I just don't imagine Miley will get the same headlines as Katy because she's much more well liked and not a media punching bag anymore.

Plus Miley’s has been flopping and making more commercial successful comebacks are entire career, whereas Katy has been a solid downward trajectory ever since 2017 (arguably 2014 since Unconditionally, Birthday and This Is How We Do vastly underperformed given her then current expectations).

I saw one comparison on twitter that the closet comp for Miley’s career in terms of commercial viability and hit songs is actually Cher.

God the charts really are dire at the moment. The domination of Ordinary (aptly named as it’s possibly the most generic song of all time) is depressing

I don't think Katy's career decline was sudden at all. It was pretty gradual. She went from constant smash hits for a few years (from California Gurls to Roar all her singles did really well).

Unconditionally was the first time she underperformed, but even years after that she still got songs that did pretty well like Chained to the Rhythm or minor hits like Swish Swish or Never Really Over that at this point she (or Miley or a plethora of other pop stars from the 00's) would probably be pretty happy to have another one of.

I think it's an unfair characterisation to make it seem like she suddenly went from Roar and Dark Horse to flopping into oblivion. She has a pretty lengthy transition period of gradually smaller and smaller hits (including one between the aforementioned songs which as a chart-watcher was a strong hint that it was now time to stop expecting guaranteed Katy Perry hits).

Miley's career has been very different, just random hits, flops and in-betweens for almost 20 years.

just read Miley's album review on Pitchfork, they're brutal, she got the worst review I've seen in a while,

calling it "a concept album without a concept".
